Vestas Offloads Colorado Wind Tower Plant (M&A, Ind. Report)

Following up on our 19 February, 2021 report that Vestas Wind Systems A/S planned to slash its manufacturing capacity across three of its four factories in Colorado due to "lower near-term market demand", the company is now reporting the sale of its 2009-vintage Pueblo, Colorado tower plant to South Korea-based CS Wind Corp..

As part of the agreement, Vestas will secure an agreed upon volume of the plant's output to support its North American market and CS Wind continue Vestas' investments and initiatives to reduce the facility's carbon dioxide emissions. NJ Offshore Wind Manufacturing Hub Underway (Ind. Report)

Following up on our 30 Dec, 2020 report, in the Garden State, Ocean Winds and steel fabricator EEW have broken ground for the EEW monopole wind tower manufacturing facility at the Port of Paulsboro Marine Terminal in Gloucester County, New Jersey.

The state committed $250 million to the two-building facility that will manufacture monopiles to supply Orsetd and PSEG's 1,100 MW Ocean Wind farm off the coast of southern New Jersey. When fully operational, Ocean Wind will generate sufficient energy 500,000 New Jersey homes. Vestas Invests in Wooden Wind Tower Specialist (Int'l. Report)

Wind energy giant Vestas' newly created venture capital arm Vestas Ventures has reportedly taken a minority shareholding in Goteborg, Sweden-based wooden wind tower technology start-up Modvion.

When compared directly with the value chain of a conventional steel tower, Modvion laminated wood constructed towers are lighter in weight and are expected to reduce carbon emissions by 80 pct. Vestas is aiming to integrate LVL towers into its design and manufacturing processes. Offshore Wind Tower Construction Propsed for Albany (Ind. Report)

Further to our July 24 report, Norway-based Equinor is reportedly seeking to develop a 2.5 GW offshore wind farm south of Long Island and would build a wind tower manufacturing plant in the Port of Albany, New York as part of the deal.

The manufacturing facility in Albany would be jointly developed by Equinor, Weldon of Denmark and Marmen of Canada. The manufactured tower components would be floated down the Hudson River and out into the construction site in the Atlantic Ocean. Aussie Steelmaker Commits $20Mn to Renewable Energy (Intl. Report)

In the Land Down Under, Melbourne-based Australian steelmaker BlueScope Steel reports it plans to invest $20 million to help deliver renewable energy infrastructure in keeping with the New South Wales State Government's recently announced $32 billion, 20-year strategy to transition away from coal-fired power to hydro, wind and solar.

Most of Australia's renewable energy infrastructure is manufactured offshore and imported. Under its plan, BlueScope "will invest directly in our own plant, but also partner with innovators and entrepreneurs to develop new technology solutions in key industries like renewables, infrastructure, defense, manufacturing and sustainable buildings. An immediate focus will be supporting the manufacture of wind tower, solar farm, pumped hydro, electricity transmission facilities," according to the BlueScope release. Vattenfall, Modvion Collaborating on Wooden Wind Towers (Int'l.)

In Sweden, Gothenburg-based laminated wood technology engineering specialist Modvion and wind energy major Vattenfall are reporting a letter of intent to enter into a business development project for evaluating building technology and commercialization of wooden onshore wind towers for Vattenfall.

Vattenfall's portfolio has the potential of approximately 5000 MW for projects on land, under development or construction in its various markets.

Lighter weight wooden towers can be constructed in modules and assembled on site allowing higher towers to be built while still using normal access roads for transportation. Wooden designs also enable radical reductions in emissions by replacing emission-heavy material such as steel and concrete, according to the Vattefall release. 3D-Printed Concrete Wind Tower Project Touted (Ind. Report)

GE Renewable Energy, 3D printed construction specialist COBOD and cement giant LafargeHolcim are announcing a collaboration to co-develop processes for 3D-printed concrete wind town bases as well as produce a wind turbine prototype with a printed pedestal, a production ready printer and materials to scale up production.

Printing a variable height base directly on-site with 3D-printed concrete technology will enable the construction of towers up to 150-200 metres tall, according to the release.

For the project, GE Renewable Energy will provide expertise related to the design, manufacture and commercialisation of wind turbines, COBOD will focus on the robotics automation and 3D printing and LafargeHolcim will design the concrete material, its processing and application. Modvion Touts Laminated Wood Wind Turbine Tower (Int'l. Report)

Swedish design and engineering firm Modvion is reporting the erection of a pilot 30 meter-tall laminated wood wind turbine tower on a Swedish island near the city of Gothenburg. The pilot was constructed for the Swedish Wind Technology Centre.

According to Modvion, wooden wind towers are cheaper to construct and lighter than steel towers and can be transported in smaller modules allowing towers to be taller and wider, and can extend longer vertically and operate in places where wind speeds are higher.

Modvion's pilot tower received €50,000 from the EU Horizon 2020 innovation fund and was constructed at a glued laminated timber factory owned by project partner and industrial wood specialist Moelven. Wind Turbine Installer Windhoist Group Sold (Int'l, M&A)

Irvine, Scotland-based wind turbine installation business Windhoist Group is reported to have been sold to European fund manager Star Capital for an undisclosed price.

Windhoist, which has premises in Germany and subsidiaries in Morocco, Ireland, South Africa and Australia, has erected more than 6000 turbines across the world, with a capacity of more than 11GW. Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, Goldwind, Enercon and Nordex are among Winhoist's customers. Recent Windhoist projects include the construction of 84 offshore wind towers for the 588MW Beatrice offshore wind project in the Moray Firth. juwi's Rhineland-Palatinate Wind Park Work Underway (Int'l Report)

Worrstadt-based German renewable energy developer juwi Group reports pre-construction -- site preparation -- work is underway at the site of its Lauda-Koenigshofen wind project in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Wind tower foundations excavation work is slated for Sept. with plans to have two Vestas V126-3.45 MW turbines installed and commissioned by year-end.

When fully operational, the wind farm is expected to generate an estimated 17.5 million kWh per year of electric power -- sufficient for as many as 5,300 local households. Ohio's Scioto Ridge Wind Farm Construction Underway (Ind. Report)

In the Buckeye State, construction is reportedly underway on the 75 turbine, 250-MW Scioto Ridge Wind Farm in Hardin and portions of northern Logan County in southern Ohio. Construction of wind tower bases, access drives and laying of underground cable is included in the initial work.

Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket Wind Turbine Arrays Set (Ind. Report)

In the Bay State, New Bedford-based Vineyard Wind reports it has eliminated three 9.5 MW offshore wind turbines located near the Nantucket Historic District and Chappaquiddick on the eastern end of Martha's Vineyard. The total size of the first U.S. large-scale offshore wind facility will remain unchanged at approximately 800 MW.

Project changes, which were made in response to community and stakeholder input, will see a 20 pct reduction in the project's overall footprint, greater space between offshore wind towers, a white-grey paint finish to limit the project's visual impacts on Martha's Vineyard, and other changes. Nordex Launches Argentine Wind Turbine Plant (Int'l Report)

Hamburg, Germnay-headquartered wind turbine manufacturer Nordex Group and Fabrica Argentina de Aviones (FAdeA) are reporting the official opening of Nordex Group's Argentinian production plant in Cordoba.

The plant began production in mid-April with the first AW132/3300 nacelles for projects for the power utility AES Generacion S.A. The plant's nacelles and hubs assembly shop is designed for an annual capacity of up to 500 MW. Nordex is also establishing three plants for concrete towers.

FAdeA is a listed aviation company under the auspices of the Argentinian Ministry of Defense.

Nordex has installed more than 25 GW of wind energy capacity in over 40 markets and has joint manufacturing capacity factories in Germany, Spain, Brazil, the United States, India, Argentina and in the near future Mexico. German Wind Tower Specialist Goes Broke (Int'l Report)

Cuxhaven, Germany=based on- and offshore wind tower manufacturer Ambau reports it has applied to the Cuxhaven District Court to open insolvency proceedings. Ambau maintains plants at the port of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony and Grafenhainichen in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. The company shuttered its facility in Bremen in October, 2016.

The company is reportedly still seeking investors to enable the continuance of business including a May, 2018 order for 50 onshore wind turbine towers from from Nordex.
