EC, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst Partnership Touted (Int'l. Report)

European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen and Bill Gates have announced a pioneering partnership between the European Commission and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst to boost investments in the critical climate technologies that will enable the net-zero economy. The new partnership aims to mobilize new investments of up to €820 million ($1 billion) between 2022-26 to build large-scale, commercial demonstration projects for clean technologies -- lowering their costs, accelerating their deployment, and delivering significant reductions in CO2 emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.

The partnership intends to invest in high-impact EU-based projects initially in four sectors with a high potential to help deliver on the economic and climate ambitions of the European Green Deal -- green hydrogen; sustainable aviation fuels (SAF); direct air carbon capture; and long-duration energy storage. In doing so, it seeks to scale up key climate-smart technologies and speed up the transition towards sustainable industries in Europe.

Investment support will take the form of financial instruments and grants. The partnership will also be open to private, philanthropic and national investments by EU Member States through InvestEU or at project level, according to the EC release. Asian Air Carriers Commit to 2050 Net-Zero Emissions (Int'l,)

Singapore Airlines Group -- Singapore Airlines, Scoot and SIA Cargo -- is reporting a commitment to invest in new-generation aircraft, adopt low-carbon technology such as sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and source "high quality" carbon offsets to meet their recently announced goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Likewise, Hong Kong-headquartered Cathay Pacific Group, one of the first air carriers in Asia to establish a timeline for achieving carbon neutrality, has announced plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To that end, Cathay Pacific will investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), identify efficiencies including a new fuel-efficient fleet and reducing engine use on the ground, as well as take advantage of carbon offsets. SAF Soon Available at Munich Airport (Int'l. Report)

Munich Airport reports sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be available to refuel aircraft at the airport from June. The fuel will be dispensed from an onsite depot as a 35 pct SAF-- conventional jet fuel blend 35 pct blend, ready for refuelling.

Munich Airport is also pursuing an ambitious climate protection strategy for reducing CO2 emissions and operating the airport in a CO2-neutral manner by 2030. To that end, the airport will invest €150 million by 2030 to cut all CO2 emissions to net-zero by 2050. Sustainable Aviation Research Centre Slated for Dublin (Int'l.)

In Ireland, Trinity College Dublin in partnership with ultra low-cost airline Ryanair are reporting the launch of the Ryanair Sustainable Aviation Research Centre. Trinity College will lead a multi-disciplinary research team focused on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), zero carbon aircraft propulsion systems and noise mapping. The research effort is supported with £1.5 million in grant funding.

Ryanair is aiming to power 12.5 pct of its flights with SAF by 2030. The project is expected to get underway befor the year end. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is reporting the launch of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) to accelerate the path to net zero aviation by driving investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), catalysing new SAF production and technological innovation and supporting member engagement in policy-making. SABA's founding member companies include Boeing, BCG, Deloitte, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Netflix and Salesforce. Key aspects of SABA's work will include:
  • Education and Policy Support -- SABA will help members navigate the technical aspects of SAF and the SAF market, aviation emissions accounting, and the SAF policy landscape.

  • Technology Innovation -- SABA will assess emerging SAF technologies and work with like-minded organizations to help address barriers to scale and cost reduction.

  • Investment Opportunity -- SABA will establish a rigorous, transparent SAF certificate system enabling air transport customers -- not only aircraft operators -- to invest in high quality SAF to meet their ambitious climate goals.

    According to RMI's managing director of climate intelligence Ned Harvey, "SABA will build on the strong foundation of these global efforts, and develop a system that enables SAF to grow at the same pace and scale that renewable electricity grew over the last decade.   • Fulcrum Bioenergy Selects First UK SAF Plant Site (Ind. Report)

    As previously reported, Plesonton, California-based low-carbon transportation fuels-from-municipal solid waste specialist Fulcrum BioEnergy has announced the site selection and launch of development activities on its first United Kingdom residual waste to low-carbon, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) plant.

    The 30-million gpy "Fulcrum NorthPoint" biorefinery will be located at the Essar Oil (UK) Limited refinery at Stanlow, Ellesmere Port, in the North West of England.     CoSAFA Aims to Accelerate SAF Usage (Ind. Report)

    The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) aviation industry group is reporting establishment of the Council on Sustainable Aviation Fuels Accountability (CoSAFA), which is intended to accelerate the industry's movement toward further sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) use.

    According to the NATA release, the global aviation industry currently accounts for around 2 pct of man-made CO2 emissions. The aviation industry is committed to limit and reduce these emissions through the deployment of advanced technology, operational measures, infrastructure improvements and SAF.

    While most SAF transactions to date have involved a limited set of SAF producers and aircraft operators, there is increasing interest in multiple-party purchase and deployment agreements, according to the release.

    CoSAFA represents a unified vision across the aviation industry for advancing consistent, accurate accounting practices documenting the production and use of SAF in such multi-party transactions -- a crucial tool for further reducing the industry's carbon footprint.

    Fulcrum Bioenergy Selects UK SAF Fuel Plant Site (Ind. Report)

    As previously reported, Pleasanton, California-based Fulcrum BioEnergy, a producer of low-carbon transportation fuels from municipal solid waste, has announced the site selection and launch of development activities on its first United Kingdom residual waste to low-carbon, sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) plant.

    The Fulcrum NorthPoint biorefinery will be located at the Essar Oil (UK) Ltd refinery at Stanlow, Ellesmere Port ,in the North West of England.

    Subject to planning permission and financing, construction is expected to get underway in late 2023 for completion within 18-24 months.     Shell Hydrogen to Develop Sustainable Aviation Fuels (Int'l. Report)

    Petroleum fuels giant Shell reports it is looking to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in the Wesseling section of its Rhineland refinery with help of a brand-new bio-power-to-liquid plant and an upgraded hydrogen electrolysis facility. On 26 Feb, the company announced its plans to increase the plant's hydrogen production capacity from 10-mws to 100-mw with help from ITM Power, ITM Linde Electrolysis GmbH and industrial gases specialist Linde.

    ITM Power manufactures polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzers for hydrogen production via electro-chemical splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen produced via electrolysis is used for power-to-x, storage, decarbonizing industrial uses, and hydrogen for fuel cell products. The Fueling Flight Initiative was convened by the European Climate Foundation (ECF) and ClimateWorks Foundation (CWF) to provide recommendations on the sustainability aspects of the EU's policy design to support Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Technical advice was provided by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).     CBI Calls for £500Mn Aviation Fuel Investment (Int'l. Report)

    In the UK, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) is calling for the Government to support the UK aviation sector in the development of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as part of a new six-point plan for achieving net zero carbon. According to the CBI release, The organisation said the UK has the chance to use its expertise to drive innovation and global leadership through the Jet Zero Council, Sustainable Aviation and others.

    Sweden Sustainable Aviation Fuel Front-runner, says Neste (Int'l.)

    In Helsinki, in line with its "fossil-free fuel by 2045" initiative, the Swedish Government reports plans to introduce a greenhouse gas reduction mandate for aviation fuel sold in Sweden in 2021. The reduction level will be 0.8 pct in 2021, and gradually increase to 27 pct in 2030. This makes Sweden an undisputed leader in sustainable aviation, according to Neste Oyi.

    "We need front-runners to lead the way in sustainable aviation. The ambitious target now set by the Swedish government is an example others should follow in order to support the aviation industry in meeting its emission reduction targets. It also creates the necessary certainty for sustainable aviation fuel producers to invest in increasing the production", says Neste VP for Renewable Aviation Europe, Jonathan Wood.

    Earlier this year, Norway introduced a 0.5 pct biofuel blending mandate. There will be enough capacity on the market to supply the anticipated volumes of sustainable aviation fuel to Sweden and Norway. Neste is already producing commercial scale volumes of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, refined from renewable waste and residue raw materials. In its neat form and over the lifecycle, the fuel can reduce up to 80 pct of greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil jet fuel, according to Neste.

    Neste's sustainable aviation fuel capacity is currently 100,000 tpy. With Neste's Singapore refinery expansion on the way and possible additional investment in the Neste Rotterdam refinery, Neste will have the capacity to produce some 1.5 million tpy of sustainable aviation fuel by 2023.

    The global aviation industry has set ambitious targets to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from air transport, including carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and beyond, and a 50 pct reduction of net aviation carbon emissions by 2050. Aviation needs multiple solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, sustainable aviation fuels offer the only viable alternative to fossil fuels for powering aircrafts, according to the Neste release.     JetBlue Airline Claims Carbon Neutrality (Ind. Report)

    Following up on our 1st Jan. coverage, U,S, air carrier JetBlue is reporting it is the first U.S. airline to achieve carbon neutrality for its domestic flights.

    As previously reported, JetBlue committed to off-setting global warming by investing in sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) from Neste, better advancements in engineering and partnerships with CarbonFund.org Foundation, South Pole and EcoAct to help offset carbon dioxide emissions. To date, the airline has offset 2.6 billion pounds of carbon dioxide with CarbonFund.org and hopes to offset 15-17 billion pounds each year -- equivalent to removing 1.5 million cars from the road.

    UK Coalition Seeks Sustainable Aviation Fuel Support (Int'l.) Report)

    In the UK, the Sustainable Aviation coalition is calling for the Government to support emerging sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) sector by committing £500 million to early stage projects. When combined with action on aircraft and engine technology R&D, airspace modernization and carbon offset and removal, the UK could build a world leading green aviation sector, the coalition claims.

    The coalition also called for Government to work with industry to: develop aircraft and engine technology R&D capabilities, ensuring the UK is among the first in the world to develop hybrid and electric aircraft; accelerate UK airspace modernization, to make use of new aircraft performance capability and reduce emissions and noise; and progress robust carbon offset measures and carbon removal technologies.

    The Coalition's call to action follows previously reported news that Europe's first municipal waste-to-jet fuel facility -- Altalto Immingham -- was granted planning permission in North East Lincolnshire.

    Neste Oyj Targets Carbon-Neutral Production by 2035 (Int'l Report)

    Espoo, Finland-headquartered biofuels and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) producer Neste Oyi reports it is committed to reaching carbon neutral production by 2035. The commitment complements Neste's other strategic climate commitment of reducing customers' greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tpy by 2030. To that end, the company:

  • Continues to focus on energy efficiency to optimize the use of fuel gas, electricity, hydrogen and steam in its production. The improvements in the turnaround at Porvoo refinery in 2020 will decrease production emissions by more than 100 kt CO2eq annually;

  • Increases the use of renewable electricity at its production sites. As an example of this, Neste has already agreed to start using wind power in Finland;

  • Increases the weight of greenhouse gas emissions in the investment calculations and business case evaluation;

  • Explores new, less emitting production methods, for example utilizing biogas or electrolysis for hydrogen production;

  • Has started a project for GHG emission reductions at the Porvoo production site, focusing on carbon capture and storage (CCS) and identifies reliable compensation models for the remaining part which cannot be achieved by emission reductions.

  • Heathrow Claims 93 pct Emissions Cut (Int'l. Report)

    In the UK, carbon neutral Heathrow Airport reports it has cut emissions 93 pct since 1990 after investing £100 million in energy efficiency measures and onsite power generation facilities. Heathrow noted it uses strictly "Clean" energy as needed, purchased carbon credits for 2019-21, and aims to achieve zero emissions from its operations within the next fifteen years.

    As we previously reported, Heathrow's four-part action plan to reduce and offset the growth in emissions builds on the momentum of technological change within the aviation industry to make travel more sustainable. The plan outlines action on four key areas including: cleaner aircraft performance and technology; improvements to airspace and ground operations; increased use of sustainable aviation fuels; and developing and promoting new carbon offsetting technologies and options. Additionally, Heathrow is calling on the ICAO -- the UN body for international aviation -- to develop global goals for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels, and calling for the UK Government to engage ICAO and fellow member states to agree on a 2050 carbon emissions reduction goal for international aviation

    Other UK airports and airlines have committed to bring UK aviation to net-zero status by 2050 -- Gatwick Airport claimed carbon neutrality through renewable energy and offsets in 2018 and Birmingham Airport has committed to net-zero by 2033.     Lavazza Joins KLM's Corporate BioFuel Programme (Int'l. Report)

    Today (05 February 2020), Italian coffee giant Lavazza and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines are reporting Lavazza is first Italian partner in KLM's Corporate BioFuel Programme aimed at making the airline industry more sustainable through the increased use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAF has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 85 pct compared to fossil fuels.

    World Energy, World Fuel Services to increase availability of sustainable aviation fuel World Energy and World Fuel Services have launched a World Economic Forum (WEF) Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) programme designed to increase SAF availability and supply chain efficiency within the aviation industry. The programme will be available for business jets travelling to the WEF 50th annual meeting, enabling lower carbon emissions on all flights departing from Jet Aviation’s facilities at Teterboro (TEB), Boston/Bedford (BED) or Dulles International (IAD) to Davos in Switzerland for the event in January. While Jet Aviation does not offer SAF at the three airports, the WEF SAF programme allows fuel consumers at these locations to opt-in and claim SAF environmental benefits. Under the programme, for each gallon of conventional fuel purchased at TEB, BED or IAD, an equivalent amount of conventional fuel will be replaced with SAF on flights departing from Jet Aviation’s Van Nuys (VNY) airport in California. Members of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Coalition include the European Business Aviation Association, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, the International Business Aviation Council, the National Air Transportation Association and the National Business Aviation Association.     IATA Rejects Mandatory Aviation SAF Blending (Int'l. Report)

    German Sustainable Aviation Fuels Initiative Adds Members (Int'l)

    The Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany (AIREG) reports Berlin-based Rosneft Deutschland and BP Europa have become the organizations newest members.

    AIREG aims to promote the research, production and usage of sustainable aviation fuels to reduce carbon emissions in aviation through the use of alternative fuels. AIREG members include universities, research institutions, plant manufacturers and operators, petroleum companies, engine and aircraft manufacturers, airports and airlines and others.

    Rosneft Deutschland currently produces around 300,000 tpy of jet fuel annually and implements into-plane aviation fuel supply in Munich, Berlin-Tegel, and Berlin-Schonefeld airports. The Russian oil company subsidiary currently blends over 400,000 tonnes of biofuels annuals across three refineries for use in the transportation sector.

    EgyptAir Operates Record Sustainable Jet Fueled Flight (Int'l.)

    In Cairo, Egypt's national air carrier, EgyptAir is reporting receipt of its newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The Dreamliner flew 10,973 kilometres from Seattle to Cairo fueled solely by sustainable aviation fuel to become the world's longest sustainable flight.

    EgyptAir is the first operator to use Boeing's new sustainable fuel delivery program that gives airlines the option to pick biofuel for aircraft delivery flights. Sustainable aviation fuels have been shown to help reduce aircraft CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent. The biodiesel biofuel used to power the Dreamliner was created from agricultural waste by Boston-headquartered World Energy at its Paramount, California facility which was designed to produce renewable jet fuel on a commercial scale.     Finnair Touts Biofuel, CO2 Emissions Offset Service (Int'l)

    Further to our July 30th coverage, Finland's national air carrier Finnair reports it will offer a new service allowing customers to offset the CO2 emissions of their flights by funding emissions reduction projects or carbon sinks, or by supporting the use of biofuels, beginning in early 2019. Finnair's partners for its offset service will include Dutch SkyNRG company and for emission reduction projects, Finnairand the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO), an international financial institution backed by the Nordic states.

    The Helsinki-headquartered airline is part of an initiative driven by Shell, SkyNRG, World Energy, San Francisco Airport and several other airlines, which aims to pave the way for a longer term, more resilient supply chain for sustainable aviation fuels, and thus supporting the aviation industry's common CO2 emission reduction targets.     Heathrow Unveils Carbon Neutral Growth Plan (Int'l, Ind. Report)

    In a first for the UK aviation industry, London's Heathrow Airport has revealed its four-part action plan to reduce and offset the growth in emissions from a planned carbon-neutral expansion in summer 2019

    Heathrow's plan builds on the momentum of technological change within the aviation industry to make travel more sustainable. The plan outlines action on four key areas including: cleaner aircraft performance and technology; improvements to airspace and ground operations; increased use of sustainable aviation fuels; and developing and promoting new carbon offsetting technologies and options. Additionally, Heathrow is calling on the ICAO -- the UN body for international aviation -- to develop global goals for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels, and calling for the UK Government to engage ICAO and fellow member states to agree on a 2050 carbon emissions reduction goal for international aviation.     EU Will Miss Aviation Emissions Target, Report Warns (Int'l)

    According to a report prepared for Brussels-based European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E), the EU will miss its 2030 aviation emissions target by almost 100 million tonnes if it adopts the new, air transport industry backed Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

    T&E claims CORSIA would allow airlines to offset emissions growth, rather than necessarily reduce it, and offered only "cheap and ineffective" remedies for emissions, which contribute towards climate change. It also noted that CORSIA would save airlines more than €3bn a year compared with expanding an existing scheme.

    The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN agency that developed CORSIA, said the scheme was one part of "ICAO's basket of measures designed to reduce carbon emissions from international aviation" and that improvements in aircraft technology, operations and sustainable aviation fuels would "achieve the international aviation sector's global goal of carbon neutral growth from 2020."

    Beginning in 2019, CORSIA will require airlines to monitor, report and verify CO2 emissions to establish a baseline, before a pilot phase from 2021 to 2023 for volunteer states. From 2027, most of ICAO's 191 member states will have to participate. The EU is aiming to cut GHG emissions by 40 pct from 1990 by 2030.     United Looks to Biofuels for Emissions Reductions (Ind. Report)

    US air carrier United Airlines reports it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 pct by 2050 and to that end will continue investing in newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft, implement operational changes to conserve fuel, and expand its use of aviation biofuels.

    The airline also noted a recent Boeing 787 flight from San Francisco to Zurich using a 30/70 blend of biofuel and conventional jet fuel. The biofuel was produced from Carinata seeds by Quebec-based Agrisoma Biosciences Inc and supplied by AltAir Fuels.

    According to United, the airline has sourced more than 2 million gallons of sustainable aviation biofuel since 2016 and is responsible for more than 50 pct of the airline industry's commitments to biofuel. Additionally, United was the first airline to regularly use sustainable aviation biofuel and has invested over $30 million in sustainable aviation fuels producer Fulcrum BioEnergy.
