IHI Touts Amonia-Natural Gas Green Fuel Blend (Int'l. Report)

Tokyo-headquartered IHI Corporation, f.k.a. Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.,reports it has developed technology for the co-firing of natural gas and ammonia for thermal power generation. Ammonia does not emit carbon dioxide when burnt and could potentially slash CO2 emissions by more than half.

According to Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), which commissioned IHI to develop the technology, the development marks the first time a 60 pct ammonia fuel has been used in a large power-generating facility.

Green-Hydrogen Plant Opens Near Fukushima, Japan (Int'l. Report)

In Japan, a consortium including Toshiba, Tohoku Electric Power and Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) are touting completion of the Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R), the world’s largest facility for green hydrogen production from renewables in Fukushima. not far from the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster.

FH2R uses a 20MW solar array, backed up by renewable power from the grid, to run a 10MW electrolyser to produce up to 100kg of hydrogen an hour. The project will be used as a test bed for mass production of green H2, with initial output directed to fuel hydrogen cars and buses in Japan, according to a release. Toyota Developing Solar Powered Prius (New Prod & Tech, Int'l)

Japanese auto giant manufacturer Toyota reports its Prius PHV has been developed into a demo vehicle with solar panels installed on roof, hood and rear panels. The automaker has tied up with NEDO, Sharp Corporation for the installations which are expected to increase the electrified vehicle's cruising range and efficiency. The demo employs a system that charges the vehicle's driving battery while in operation or parked.

Toyota is planning trial runs for the demo to gather data the vehicle's solar panel power generation and the amount the drive battery is charged when driven or stationary. Solar Frontier Breaks Thin-Film Cell Efficiency Record (Int'l)

Kanagawa, Japan-based thin-film CIS solar panel manufacturer Solar Frontier K.K., a unit of Showa Shell Sekiyu KK, is claiming a world record conversion efficiency of 23.35 pct on a 1-sq-cm thin-film solar cell that does not contain any cadmium (Cd).

Solar Frontier was working with the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan when it broke the previous 22.9 pct record which it set in November 2017. Calif. Radox Flow Battery Energy Storage Pilot Underway (Ind. Report)

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) -- Japan's largest public management organization promoting research and development as well as deployment of industrial, energy and environmental technologies -- and Sumitomo Electric Industries are reporting the second stage of a 2MW/8MWh stationary radox flow battery energy storage pilot in California is underway.

The pilot, which includes partnering with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), is the first to connect a battery storage system in the US wholesale energy market.

The project follows an agreement signed between NEDO and the California state government's Office of Business and Economic Development to promote the use of energy storage in the state. Californian utilities are required under State law AB 2514 to complete the installation of storage battery capacity up to a certain proportion by 2024. Japanese Woody Biomass Jet Fuel Demo Construction Underway (Int'l)

In December, a Japanese consortium led by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd., CEPCO, Toyo Engineering Corp., the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), with support from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), touted a planned demonstration facility that integrates high-performance entrained-flow gasification technology and Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis for the production of jet fuel from woody biomass. The consortium of the demo project is now underway for an expected trial production run later this year.

When fully operational, the the demo facility will potentially process 0.7 tpd of woody biomass to produce about 20 lpd of "neat" biojet fuel. MHPS will be responsible for the entrained-bed gasification technology, Toyo for micro-channel F-T synthesis technology and the reforming of the synthesized oil, CEPCO for equipment operation and fuel procurement, and JAXA for evaluation of combustion characteristics.

TEPCO Testing for Offshore Wind Seabed Viability (Int'l Report)

In Japan, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc (TEPCO) reports it is using bore-holes and sound waves to survey the seabed to verify the feasibility of constructing offshore offshore wind farms off the coasts of Choshi City and Asahi City in Chiba Prefecture.
