Iberdrola, Vestas Ink Baltic Eagle Turbine Agreement (Int'l.)
Iberdrola, Vestas
Date: 2021-06-04
Madrid-headquartered renewable energy major Iberdrola reports it has contracted with Vestas to supply 50 units of its V174-9.5 MW wind turbine -- including service and maintenance -- for Iberdrola's Baltic Eagle project which is being developed roughly 75 km off the island of Rugen, in the German Baltic Sea.

When fully operational, Baltic Eagle, Iberdrola's second major offshore initiative in Germany after the installation of 350-MW Wikinger wind farm in 2017, will generate sufficient energy to meet 45 pct of the total electricity consumption of the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and it will displace 1.65 million tpy of CO2 emissions.

Iberdrola has 1.3 GW installed and is progressing with the construction of a further 2.6 GW and expects to have 12,000 MW offshore wind in operation by 2030. The Group operates the 389-MW West of Duddon Sands offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea (since 2014), 350-MW Wikinger in the German Baltic Sea (since 2017) and the 714-MW East Anglia One in British waters in the North Sea (since 2020). At different stages of planning and development are 496-MW Saint-Brieuc project, off the coast of Brittany in northern France, which will use 62 Siemens-Gamesa turbines each with 8-MW unit capacity; 800-MW Vineyard Wind, a joint venture with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, off the coast of Massachusetts; and Baltic Eagle. Emissions-Free Industrial Heat Challenge Announced (Int'l.)
Iberdrola,European Innovation Council
Date: 2021-02-15
Iberdrola Group, in collaboration with the European Innovation Council's Energy4Planet initiative, has launched a new Startup Challenge through its International Startup Programme (PERSEO) which aims to discover innovative solutions to decarbonize industrial processes, through the automatisation of the design and the further integration of clean technologies and energy efficiency measures.

Iberdrola is looking to help these industries on their energy transition, searching for ad-hoc solutions for factories to improve the efficiency of the energy used while reducing CO2 emissions in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. The solutions submitted must meet the following needs:

  • Automation project design for decarbonisation of industrial processes using software tools;

  • Hybridisation of clean technologies, for example: heat pumps, electric furnaces, energy efficiency measures, green hydrogen or self-consumption by distributed renewable energy;

  • Energy Consumption and Savings simulations; and

  • Project finance calculations based on project.

    CAPEX and OPEX inputs: Investment Rate of Return (IRR), Net Present Value (NPV) and Payback Periods (PB).

    The proposals will be analysed based on criteria of scalability, replicability, ease of implementation and integration of ad-hoc decarbonisation solutions for industrial plants.

    The selected project will be developed in collaboration with the technical specialists from the Iberdrola Industrial Heating and Cooling area. Iberdrola will collaboration on the development of a proof-of-concept and may offer the winner the opportunity to scale up the solution by means of commercial agreements. Additionally, PERSEO may consider investing in the participant.

The conference highlighted the deployment of 21,000,000 smart meters with PRIME Technology worldwide.

    Attending utilities received further clarification on how approximately 80 products have been PRIME certified by laboratory members, such as DNV-GL and Tecnalia.

    PRIME represents a public, open and non-proprietary telecommunications architecture which supports present and future AMM functionalities and enables the building of the electricity networks of the future, or smart grids.

    PRIME aims to establish a complete set of international standards which will allow for full interoperability among equipment and systems from different providers. Thus, competition in the metering market will benefit utilities and its customers.

    The components of PRIME architecture (modulation and coding techniques, protocols, data formats etc.) are not subject to any Intellectual Property Rights. Specifications are comprehensive and detailed enough so that any new entrant will be able to provide interoperable solutions to the market, according to the PRIME website.
