Singapore Airlines Launches Voluntary Carbon Offsets (Int'l.)

The Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group has launched a voluntary carbon offset programme that allows passengers on both Singapore Airlines and Scoot to offset their carbon emissions via dedicated microsites beginning in late July, this year. Passengers will also be able to use "frequent flyer" points to offset emissions, starting in Q4, 2021.

The offset projects selected include: protecting forests in Indonesia; supporting renewable solar energy projects in India ; and providing efficient, clean burning cook stoves for rural families in Nepal. The offsets will be provided via the BlueHalo digital solution, which has been developed by Australia-based Tasman Environmental Markets (TEM). This allows passengers to immediately calculate and offset the emissions associated with their journey.

As previously reported, the SIA has committed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 by: increased investments in new-generation aircraft; achieving higher operational efficiency; adopting low-carbon technology such as sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and sourcing high quality carbon offsets.

CME Launches Global Emissions Offset Futures (Ind. Report)

GEO futures, which were designed to help customers manage the risks associated with voluntary decarbonization strategies, are based on the selection criteria and review process developed for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). GEO futures allow for delivery of CORSIA eligible voluntary offset credits from three ICAO approved registries and are listed by and subject to the rules of NYMEX. Hydrogen Producer BayoTech Scores $157Mn (Alt. Fuel, Hydrogen)

Albuquerque, New Mexicao-based on-site hydrogen production specialist BayoTech Inc.reports receipt of an equity investment of up to $157 million from Newlight Partners LP and existing investors Cottonwood Technology Funds, Sun Mountain Capital and new investor Fortistar. The proceeds will be used to accelerate BayoTech's growth through product development, project development and infrastructure expansion.

Bayotech provides modular hydrogen generation systems using energy-efficient steam methane reformers (SMR). Current containerized BayoTech systems produce hydrogen at a rate of 200 kg H2, 500 kg H2 and 1,000 kg H2 per day. The company is developing systems capable of producing 5,000 kg, 10,000 kg and 30,000 kg of hydrogen per day, according to the release.

BayoTech's modular, scalable, and rapidly deployable hydrogen production systems requires low upfront capital commitments and when paired with renewable natural gas (RNG), offers the most cost-effective green hydrogen available today. EPA Sets Aircraft Engine Carbon Emissions Limits (Reg. & Leg.)

In Washington, the US The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) it is adopting greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards applicable to certain classes of engines used by civil subsonic jet airplanes and larger subsonic propeller-driven airplanes. These new standards are equivalent to the airplane CO2 standards adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 2017 and apply to both new type design airplanes and in-production airplanes.

The standards meet the EPA's obligation under the Clean Air Act to adopt GHG standards for certain classes of airplanes as a result of the 2016 Finding That Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Aircraft Cause or Contribute to Air Pollution That May Reasonably Be Anticipated To Endanger Public Health and Welfare for six well-mixed GHGs emitted by certain classes of airplane engines. Airplane engines emit only two of the six well-mixed GHGs, CO2 and nitrous oxide (N2O).

IATA Launches New Exchange for Offsets Trading (Ind. Report)

Geneva, Switzerland-based International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports the launch of the Aviation Carbon Exchange (ACE) the first centralized, real-time marketplace integrated with the IATA Clearing House (ICH) for the settlement of funds on trades in carbon offsets. ACE will be a key tool helping airlines efficiently manage these important transactions

ACE, which was developed in conjunction with commodities trader Xpansiv CBL Holding, enables airlines and other aviation stakeholders, enable aviation industry players to offset their carbon footprint by purchasing credits in certified forestry projects, clean wind energy operations, protection of eco-systems and remote community-based, and other projects to cut emissions. The platform will be a key tool for airlines in fulfilling their obligations under CORSIA which was agreed by governments through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 2016. EPA Urged to Toughen Aviation Emissions Standards (Ind. Report)

A coalition of attorneys general from California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia is lobbying the U.S. EPA to stiffen aviation emissions standards and regulations.

In July, the EPA proposed aligning US emissions standards for commercial aviation and large business jets with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) international carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions standards. The EPA proposal would apply to new aircraft designs on or after 1 January 2020 and in-production units on or after 1 January 2028.

The coalition claims the EPA proposal is "entirely insufficient and unlawful" and will not allow the agency to fulfill obligations under the Clean Air Act. "EPA can and must adopt effective standards to substantially reduce these emissions, mitigate existing climate harms, and avoid the worst economic and public health outcomes of an unmitigated climate crisis," according to a release. ICAO Says CORSIA Not Replacing EU ETS (Int'l. Report)

The Montreal-headquartered U.N International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) reports its planned scheme for offsetting emissions from international flights will supplement, not replace, the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

Under the EU ETS, airline flights between European countries are required to purchase permits to cover some emissions from these trips. ICAO wants the EU to remove these flights from its carbon market so that CORSIA can be the only market-based measure tackling international aviation emissions.

With the UN planning a 2021 launch of CORSIA, its global scheme to help airlines offset their carbon emissions, some EU lawmakers and environmental groups want assurances that the European Commission will not remove aviation from the EU ETS.

CORSIA plans to use a system of offsetting to cap emissions from international flights at 2020 levels. From 2021, airlines would be required to buy carbon offset credits to cover any emissions above the 2020 baseline. Critics say this would allow aviation emissions to keep rising, if airlines bought enough offset credits to cover the increase. EPA Aircraft GHG Rule Proposal in White House Hands (Reg & Leg)

In the nation's capitol, the EPA reports its first-ever proposed rule on aircraft greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been sent to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review.

The proposed rule builds on the EPA's 2016 finding that aviation emissions endanger public health and welfare. Unfortunately, the new rules proposal comes at a time when the airlines are struggling because of the COVID-19 crisis and can ill afford potentially expensive new obligations.

Internationally, the UN International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set its own GHG emissions reductions calling for an emissions freeze to be met through more energy efficient aircraft, increased use of biofuels and other "low-carbon" fuels, improved airline operations or the purchase of approved offsets.

The U.S., an ICAO member, has agreed to impose the freeze in 2021. The freeze, which becomes mandatory in 2027, is calculated on the average of 2019 and 2020, so the baseline is plummeting thanks to COVID-19. The industry now prefers that the baseline be based on 2019 alone, which is much more in line with their initial expectations.

Benin Joins CORSIA Aviation Emissions Offsetting Programme (Int'l.)

The West African nation of Benin (pop. 12.2 million) is confirming its participation in the UN affiliated International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Including Benin, 83 countries will begin offsetting their international flight emissions when the CORSIA voluntary pilot phase kicks off in 2021. Together they account for 76.64 pct of current international scheduled flights.

As previously noted, ICAO will allow airlines to purchase CO2 offset units from six programs under CORSIA in order to meet its emissions reduction targets up to 2023. The approved schemes include the U.N. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the Gold Standard and the Verified Carbon Standard. ICAO Updates Carbon Credits from Offsetting Scheme (Int'l; Report)

Heathrow Claims 93 pct Emissions Cut (Int'l. Report)

In the UK, carbon neutral Heathrow Airport reports it has cut emissions 93 pct since 1990 after investing £100 million in energy efficiency measures and onsite power generation facilities. Heathrow noted it uses strictly "Clean" energy as needed, purchased carbon credits for 2019-21, and aims to achieve zero emissions from its operations within the next fifteen years.

As we previously reported, Heathrow's four-part action plan to reduce and offset the growth in emissions builds on the momentum of technological change within the aviation industry to make travel more sustainable. The plan outlines action on four key areas including: cleaner aircraft performance and technology; improvements to airspace and ground operations; increased use of sustainable aviation fuels; and developing and promoting new carbon offsetting technologies and options. Additionally, Heathrow is calling on the ICAO -- the UN body for international aviation -- to develop global goals for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels, and calling for the UK Government to engage ICAO and fellow member states to agree on a 2050 carbon emissions reduction goal for international aviation

Other UK airports and airlines have committed to bring UK aviation to net-zero status by 2050 -- Gatwick Airport claimed carbon neutrality through renewable energy and offsets in 2018 and Birmingham Airport has committed to net-zero by 2033. Aviation Carbon Emissions per Passenger Down 50 pct (Int'l Report)

In a recent release, the Geneva, Switzerland-based International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that aviation carbon emissions per passenger have declined by more than half since 1990. The improvement is credited in part to industry-wide fuel efficiency improvements of 2.3 pct over the period since 2009, investments in more efficient aircraft and operational efficiencies.

From 2020, the aviation industry aims cap net emissions and cut emissions to half 2005 levels by 2050. To that end, Airlines have invested some $1 trillion in new aircraft since 2009, and signed forward purchase agreements for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) amounting to approximately $6 billion.

In addition, the introduction of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) will ensure carbon-neutral growth on international flights from 2020 and raise around $40 billion in climate finance. Norwegian Airline Offers Passenger CO2-Offsetting (Int'l Report)

Norwegian, the low-cost airline reports it will join the UNFCCC's Climate Neutral Now Pledge to measure and report its greenhouse gas emissions, reduce its greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible and offset remaining emissions with UN Certified Emission Reductions (CERs).

To that end, Norwegian has partnered with the Oslo-based climate company CHOOOSE to make it easy for customers to offset their carbon footprint as part of the ticketing process.

When first selecting a flight, Norwegian informs customers how its flights' emissions compares to industry average. The CO2 emissions calculation is based on the official methodology of the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Council of Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Norwegian's own flight emissions data. Next, customers are offered a simple option to offset their calculated carbon footprint directly in the checkout process. For customers that opt in, offsetting is then performed through carefully selected CO2-reducing clean energy projects in regions Norwegian flies to. The projects are certified by the UN and the Gold Standard. The Gold Standard also includes contributions to other UN Sustainable Development Goals. UK Discount Airline to Offset Flight Carbon Emissions (Int'l.)

In the UK, London-based discount air carrier easyJet reports it is implementing carbon offsetting plans to operate with net-zero carbon emissions across its fleet and flight network. The carbon offset program is expected to start immediately at a projected annual cost of roughly £25 million per year.

EasyJet's scheme exceeds the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) scheme. CORSIA is an emission mitigation approach for the global airline industry, developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization and adopted in October 2016. AirCarbon Touts New Digital Carbon Credits Exchange (Int'l Report)

In Singapore, AirCarbon Pte Ltd. reports its newly launched global blockchain-based AirCarbon Exchange will provide a ready supply of credits (EEUs) to airlines and other corporate buyers wishing to acquire CO2 offsets for compliance and voluntary purposes.

These credits, when approved, will be eligible under the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) regime. Each tradable token will be backed by one equivalent tonne of CORSICA-compliant, highly liquid and tradable carbon credits. AirCarbon is applying for the recognized market operator (RMO) licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and aims for the exchange to be fully operational in 2020.

AirCarbon also operates the AirCarbon Fund, an investment fund which invests in carbon-mitigating projects such as reforestation, methane capture and carbon emissions reduction. In Brussels, the PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution Alliance (PRIME) reports more than 40 participants from over 20 utilities and integrators and certification entities -- CEZ Distribuce, EDP Distribuicao, E-Redes, Iberdrola and others -- attended its fifth annual Utility to Utility User Group Conference in Munich. The conference highlighted the deployment of 21,000,000 smart meters with PRIME Technology worldwide.

Attending utilities received further clarification on how approximately 80 products have been PRIME certified by laboratory members, such as DNV-GL and Tecnalia.

PRIME represents a public, open and non-proprietary telecommunications architecture which supports present and future AMM functionalities and enables the building of the electricity networks of the future, or smart grids.

PRIME aims to establish a complete set of international standards which will allow for full interoperability among equipment and systems from different providers. Thus, competition in the metering market will benefit utilities and its customers.

The components of PRIME architecture (modulation and coding techniques, protocols, data formats etc.) are not subject to any Intellectual Property Rights. Specifications are comprehensive and detailed enough so that any new entrant will be able to provide interoperable solutions to the market, according to the PRIME website. US Airlines Agree to UN Climate Change Plan (Ind. Report)

According to Travel Pulse, virtually every U.S.-based airline has voluntarily agreed to the a UN's Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) plan that caps emissions at 2020 levels and is administered by the U.N.-affiliated International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),

The participating airline majors include Alaska Airlines, American, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit and United as well as smaller airlines like Piedmont and Republic and others.

CORSIA is designed to become mandatory after 2027. ICAO will use 2020 figures to determine the emissions cap. The airline industry as a whole has a problematic record when it comes to carbon footprints, and it was only set to get worse with the expected almost tripling of air travel by 2050. Aviation Emissions Could Grow Sevenfold over 30 yrs. (Ind. Report)

As we previously reported, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is projecting aviation carbon emission could grow seven-fold over the next 30 years -- 70 pct higher in 2020 than they were in 2005. ICAO forecasts that by 2050 emissions could have grown by between 300 pct and 700 pct.

Until recently, aviation had not been central to the climate change debate. Enjoying special status, aviation and shipping were excluded from the landmark Kyoto and Paris climate-change agreements. Urged to produce its own solutions, ICAO introduced a marginally successful global scheme in 2016 and the EU launched its Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) that serve the EU member countries.

A recent EC study of aircraft emissions notes that modern aircraft are 70 pct more fuel-efficient than 40 years ago and that while airlines with the highest load factors produce significantly less emissions per passenger than less successful ones, aviation still consumes 5 million bpd of oil and contributes about 2.5 pct of global emissions and that that 85 pct of carbon offset projects it had evaluated had failed to reduce emissions. According to European Commission (EC) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) data, by 2020, global international aviation emissions are projected to be around 70 pct higher than in 2005 and could grow by a further 300-700 pct by 2050.

Under the EU ETS, all airlines operating in Europe are required to monitor, report and verify their emissions, and to surrender allowances against those emissions. o date, the EU ETS is credited with reducing aviation sector's carbon footprint by more than 17 million tpy with compliance covering over 99.5 pct of aviation emissions.

The ICAO's Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) aims to stabilize CO2 emissions at 2020 levels by requiring airlines to offset the growth of their emissions after 2020. During the period 2021-2035, and based on expected participation, the scheme is estimated to offset around 80 pct of the emissions above 2020 levels. EU Will Miss Aviation Emissions Target, Report Warns (Int'l)

According to a report prepared for Brussels-based European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E), the EU will miss its 2030 aviation emissions target by almost 100 million tonnes if it adopts the new, air transport industry backed Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

T&E claims CORSIA would allow airlines to offset emissions growth, rather than necessarily reduce it, and offered only "cheap and ineffective" remedies for emissions, which contribute towards climate change. It also noted that CORSIA would save airlines more than €3bn a year compared with expanding an existing scheme.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the UN agency that developed CORSIA, said the scheme was one part of "ICAO's basket of measures designed to reduce carbon emissions from international aviation" and that improvements in aircraft technology, operations and sustainable aviation fuels would "achieve the international aviation sector's global goal of carbon neutral growth from 2020."

Beginning in 2019, CORSIA will require airlines to monitor, report and verify CO2 emissions to establish a baseline, before a pilot phase from 2021 to 2023 for volunteer states. From 2027, most of ICAO's 191 member states will have to participate. The EU is aiming to cut GHG emissions by 40 pct from 1990 by 2030. Geneva Airport Grounds Renewable Jet Fuel Project (Int'l Report)

Helsinki-headquartered renewable fuel producer Neste Oyj reports that due to funding shortfalls Geneva Airport has decided not to proceed with its September, 2017 plan to replace 1 pct of the conventional jet fuel used for aircraft with renewable jet fuel in a pilot project with Neste.

Neste also reports it will continue renewable jet fuel production as planned and volumes will increase year-on-year. With the company's planned additional 1 million ton renewable product capacity in Singapore, renewable jet fuel production is estimated to increase significantly by 2022.
