The system consists of a hydrogen power-to-power system made by an electrolyser, converting electricity into hydrogen power-to-gas and a fuel cell system, converting hydrogen stored in large quantities back to electricity gas-to-power.

The 2.5 MW facility uses technology developed and manufactured in Mississauga, Ontario by Hydrogenics. It was designed and built on a 5-MW scalable platform that incorporates Hydrogenic's next-generation PEM electrolyzer technology. The facility provides the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) of Ontario with a fast-responding resource to enhance the flexibility and reliability of operating the grid. Regulation service corrects for short-term changes in electricity use and helps compensate for real-time supply and demand imbalances.
The hydrogen produced can also be used for a number of purposes such as fuelling cars and trains, or blended into the natural gas system to offset traditional natural gas.
