Bureau Veritas Claims French Floating Wind Farm Certification Contract (Int'l. Report)

International inspection and classification company Bureau Veritas (BV) reports receipt of a project certification contract for EolMed, a floating offshore wind farm pilot project in France. The project is being developed by Qairos Energies along with Total, Ideol, and Vestas Wind Systems A/S.

Located in the Mediterranean Sea Aude region, EolMed is one of four floating pilot farms under development in France. It will incorporate three Vestas V164-10 MW wind turbines totaling 30MW installed on floating foundations anchored at an average depth of 60 meters.

Bureau Veritas will provide technical expertise and assessment of the floating foundations, their mooring system and the dynamic sections of the inter-array cables. Shell, Simply Blue Energy Partner on Floating Wind Project (Int'l.)

Irish renewable energy developer Simply Blue Energy reports Shell New Energies has signed an agreement to acquire a 51 pct share of their Simply Blue Energy Kinsale venture, which was set up to develop the Emerald Project, a floating wind farm in the Irish Celtic Sea.

The Joint Venture will be operated by Simply Blue Energy supported by Shell floating wind experts, with the project office based in the Cork City Docklands rejuvenation area.

The project is in the early stages and aims to exploit the vast floating wind potential in the Irish part of the Celtic Sea. 300MW of installed capacity is planned initially, with the potential to scale-up to a total installed capacity of 1GW. This is equivalent to powering 800,000 Irish homes. Repsol S A, Ibereolica Renovables Chilean Wind JV Underway (Int'l.)

Repsol and Grupo Ibereolica Renovables in Santiago, Chile, report their first joint wind farm in the Chilean province of Huasco is underway. The 189-MW Cabo Leones III wind farm is being developed in two phases.

The first phase with 79 MW and 22 SG 132 wind turbines, entered into commercial operation in December 2020. It will produce 280 GWh of clean energy per year, thereby avoiding 94,000 tpy of CO2 emissions. The second phase broke ground in July 2020 and is slated to enter into commercial operation in Q2, 2021.

The Repsol and Grupo Ibereolica Renovables joint venture has a portfolio of assets in operation, construction, and advanced development of more than 1,600 MW, with commercial operation dates up until 2023, and the possibility of surpassing 2,600 MW by 2030.

Repsol currently has nearly 3,000 MW of low-emissions generation capacity installed. It has six renewables projects under development in Spain and holds a stake in one of the world's largest semi-submersible floating wind farms, Windfloat Atlantic, off the coast of Portugal, which is now in operation.

Grupo Ibereolica Renovables currently operates 12 wind farms with an installed capacity of 205 MW in Spain and 444 MW in Chile. Additionally, it has approximately 10 GW of wind and solar projects under development in Spain, Chile, Peru, and Brazil. Samsung, DNV to Develop Offshore Wind Stabilizers (Ind. Report)

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co reports it and DNV GL, a Norwegian ship quality assurance company, will work together to develop remotely controlled "floaters" to stabilize offshore wind turbines.

According to the Brussels-based Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), output of offshore floating wind farms is estimated to globally rise from 11 mw in 2019 to 2,000 mw in 2030. Paris-headquartered energy giant TOTAL SE is reporting the acquisition of a 20 pct stake in the 4 Vestas turbine equipped Eolmed floating wind farm pilot project in the Mediterranean, near Port-La-Nouvelle (Occitan region), France.

TOTAL is focused on expanding renewable operations globally and aims to produce 35 GW of energy from renewable sources by 2025 from the present level of 7 GW. By 2050-end. The company expects 40 pct of its sales to be from its renewable power generation business for a projected cash flow of more than $1.5 billion per year by 2025. Greenalia's Gran Canaria Floating Wind Farm Underway (Int'l Report)

In Spain, Coruna-based independent power producer and renewable energy specialist Greenalia reports construction of its first floating offshore wind energy installation is underway.

The 50 MW GOFIO wind farm Southeast of the Island of Gran Canaria incorporates four 12.5 MW marine wind turbines to generate sufficient energy for as many as 70,000 homes while avoiding 140,000 tpy of CO2 emissions, according to the company release. Norwegian Offshore Floating Wind Project Gets the Nod (Int'l.)

Maritime Executive is reporting the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Industry has approved plans for development and operation of the to $488 million Hywind Tampen offshore floating wind farm which will supply power to the Snorre and Gullfaks offshore oil platforms.

The 88 MW Hywind Tampen wind farm, which is being developed by Equinor, will incorporate 11 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines mounted on floating concrete spar substructures with shared anchors supplied by Kvaerner. Hywind Tampen is slated for start-up at the end of 2022. Aqua Ventus Developing First US Floating Wind Farm (Ind Report)

Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports the recent signing of a 20-year ppa with Maine Aqua Ventus which plans to construct two floating wind turbines in the Gulf of Maine using technology developed by the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center. Subject to various regulatory and environmental approvals, the project could be completed in 2022.

Aqua Ventus is presently working on a pilot project miles off of Monhegan Island, the first pilot project of floating wind technology in the Americas. It is one-eighth the scale of a planned six-megawatt turbine. Floating Wind Farm Planned for Ulsan, Korea (Int'l Report)

Following up on our 21st October coverage, EDP Renewables, a consortium founded by EDP and Aker Solutions reports it has joined WindPower Korea with investments in the development company Korea Floating Wind Power (KFWind). Principle Power, which had a role in originating the KFWind project portfolio, will supply its WindFloat foundation technology for the 500-MW project.

As previously reported, KFWind inked a MoU with the City of Ulsan to cooperate on the development of floating wind projects and support the Ulsan region as a manufacturing hub for domestic and export offshore wind markets.

South Korea is targeting 13 GW of offshore wind installed by 2030, and 30 pct or more renewable energy by 2040. Floating Wind Farm Planned for Ulsan, Korea (Int'l Report)

A consortium of WindPower Korea, EDP Renewables and the engineering firm Aker Solutions are reporting plans to develop an initial 500MW floating wind farm off the coast of Ulsan Metropolitan City in South Korea. Principle Power will supply its proven WindFloat® foundation technology for the project.

The South Korean Government is calling for 13 GW of offshore wind to be installed by 2030 and set a target of at least 30 pct renewable energy by 2040.

The Ulsan area is considered well-suited for commercializing floating wind, due to the combination of industry-leading shipyards, maritime expertise and port facilities in the region. Consortium Funds Offshore Wind Anchorage Study (R&D, Funding)

The new federally-funded U.S. National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium reports awarding its first contract to the U.S. DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The $300,000 award will support NREL's work on the economic feasibility of shared mooring lines to cut deep-water floating wind farm costs by connecting adjacent turbine platforms and distributing load, resulting in fewer anchors and considerable savings.

The DOE-created consortium is funded with $20 million to conduct research and development to address technological barriers and lower the costs and risks of offshore wind in the United States. To that end, DOE and Department of the Interior (DOI) identified the following research areas to facilitate the development of the U.S. offshore wind industry: wind plant technology advancement; wind resource and physical site characterization, and; installation, operations and maintenance, and supply chain technology solutions.

Japanese solar power company Shizen Energy reports it is expanding its renewable energy activity and, to that end, has inked an agreement with French offshore wind developer Ideol to collaborate on a floating wind farm off the coast of Japan.

Historically, Shizen Energy focused on solar energy and helped develop about 800 MW of renewable power across Japan.

Ideol is a global leader and pure player in floating foundations for offshore wind and has been engineering and accompanying floating offshore wind projects from conception to installation since 2010, according to the company website. Equinor Pursuing Canary Island Floating Wind Farm (Int'l Report)

Oslo-headquartered Norwegian energy company Equinor is reportedly interested in developing an €860 million, 200-MW floating wind farm offshore Spain's Gran Canaria island, according to various media.from the coast of Juan Grande.

Equinor expects to start working on obtaining the necessary permits for the project by the end of the year and to put the wind farm into operation in 2024. If selected, the project is expected to be similar to Equinor's 30MW Hywind Scotland, the world's first commercial-scale floating wind farm operation. First African Floating Wind Farm Launched in Capetown (Int'l)

In South Africa, Marlenique Estate, a fruit farm outside of Franschhoek, reports the unveiling of Africa's first state-of-the-art floating solar PV system constructed by New South Energy.

The facility is the first commercially-operated floating solar system on the African continent as well as the largest, at 60kWp.

The first phase of the project also includes the installation of a land-based solar PV system on the farm, allowing the farm to run 90 pct of its cold storage, irrigation and wedding venue facilities off the grid. In the second phase, battery packs will be added to the current set up, removing the estate from the main power grid completely. DNV GL's Windfloat Atlantic Due Diligence Completed (Ind. Report)

Energy advisory and certification specialist DNV GL is reporting completion of a lenders' technical due diligence on the 25-MW Windfloat Atlantic floating wind farm project now under construction off the coast of Portugal.

DNV GL's technical due diligence reportedly helped secure the €60 million from the European Investment Bank so the project could become the world's first project-financed floating wind farm.

The project is being developed by Windplus and will incorporate three 8.4-MW MHI Vestas turbines, the largest and most powerful wind turbines ever installed on a floating foundation platform.

EIB Funds Semi-Submersible Platform Offshore Wind Project (Int'l)

The European Investment Bank (EIB is reporting a € 60 million loan to Portuguese energy giant EDP Renovaveis subsidiary Windplus S.A. for the construction of a first-of-its-kind, semi-submersible platform offshore floating wind farm to be located about 20 km off the coast of Portugal.

The project will also be supported by the InnovFin Energy Demonstration Project facility, which is funded under the EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme , and an additional €29.9 million from the EU NER300 programme, plus up to €6 million from the Government of Portugal, through the Portuguese Carbon Fund.

Until 2020, "InnovFin -- EU Finance for Innovators" offers a range of tailored products which will make available financing in support of research and innovation (R&I) by small, medium-sized and large companies and the promoters of research infrastructures. S. Korea Plans Additional 12GW Wind Power by 2030 (Int'l Report)

In Seoul, the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reports the country will add 12 gigawatt of new wind power capacity by 2030. The new energy road map aims to acquire 48.7 GW of new clean energy sources, with 12 GW of them coming from wind power plants.

Initially, the government plans to establish 500 MW-class wind turbines in coastal areas and explore ways to converge them with shipping, ship building and other marine-based industries. It also aims to create large-scale floating wind farms.
