UK Port of Tyne Fine Tunes Decarbonization Strategy (Int'l.)
Port of Tyne
Date: 2021-01-08
In the UK, the deep-water Port of Tyne in the north-east of England reports completion of a detailed modelling exercise and long-term analysis of its electric power network as part of its decarbonisation and clean energy strategy.

The analysis is intended to help port management understand both current and future energy requirements in line with Tyne's roadmap to net-zero emissions -- carbon neutrality by 2030 and an all-electric port by 2040.

In reaching its goal, the Port of Tyne recently invested in a fleet of electric vehicles, LED lighting and smart energy monitoring meters in every building and asset, and is presently evaluating the potential for installing solar panels on warehouse buildings. Port of Tyne has also launched Tyne Clean Energy Park as a strategic base for the region's rapidly growing renewable energy sector.

Port of Tyne is one of the UK's largest Trust Ports and is entirely self-financing with no government support. (Source: Port of Tyne, SmartCitiesWorldNews, 5 Jan., 2021) Contact: Port of Tyne Authority, Matt Beeton, CEO , +44 191 257 1373, www.portoftyne.co.uk

Northumbria U. Joins EU Housing Energy Efficiency Project (Int'l.)
Northumbria University
Date: 2020-07-10
In the UK, Northumbria University reports it has been selected to participate in a €4.8 million RINNO project to make renovating residential buildings in Europe more energy efficient.

Over the next four years, the RINNO project will develop new ways to increase a building's energy efficiency, environmental performance and occupant satisfaction. The project will investigate novel technologies, processing and business models, and develop solutions to enable the construction industry to make significant improvements to energy inefficient buildings around Europe.

Northumbria University researchers will join experts from Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland and Spain to investigate new building systems, the use of robots and 'cobots' for building assembly, artificial intelligence, augmented reality and Blockchain-enabled crowd equity funding to improve current processes relating to building renovation. Northumbria will also develop state-of-the-art energy monitoring software systems and use its Smart Connected Homes tool which shows how residents use electricity, light and move around their homes, as well as internal room temperatures and levels of humidity. The Northumbria team will also develop a project collaboration platform that will integrate the actors and workflows involved in the deep renovation of buildings.

The RINNO project is funded by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 programme. The solutions developed by RINNO will be demonstrated in four real-life renovation projects in France, Denmark, Greece and Poland. Clean Energy Finance Corp. Touts Green Home Loan Program (Int'l.)
Clean Energy Finance Corporation
Date: 2020-01-13
In the Land Down Under, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) is launching a green home loan program at 2.44 pct interest for borrowers who meet a minimum seven-star energy rating, which it says is the first loan to use energy efficiency measurement tools to determine eligibility. The Bank Australia -- the first lender to offer the scheme -- will draw on up to $60 million in CEFC finance, providing the interest rate discount to mortgages below $1.5 million

A minimum of seven stars under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) -- which rates the energy efficiency of a home based on its design -- exceeds the minimum standards of the National Construction Code, and homes built to this rating require less energy for heating and cooling.

At a later date, Bank Australia is expected extend the discounted loan program to finance green home improvements, including energy monitoring, energy storage systems, solar hot wate, energy efficient air conditioning and others.
