Lake Erie Wind Pilot Approved with Major Limitations (Ind. Report)
Lake Erie Energy Development Corp
Date: 2020-05-27
The Ohio Power Siting Board last week approved non-profit Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo) pilot six-turbine Lake Erie offshore wind project with 33 -- including one that the turbines could not turn at night between March 1 and November 1, to limit risk to birds and bats. The developer claims the limits may kill the demonstration project which , as previously reported, received $40 million in grant funding from the U.S. DOE.

The Icebreaker pilot project has been approved by U.S. DOE, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers which last year signed off on an environmental assessment that found no significant environmental impact from the project. The project is also supported by the Ohio Environmental Council and Sierra Club. (Source: LEEDCo, Cleveland.com, 23 May, 2020) Contact: LEEDCo, Lorry Wagner, Pres., (216) 241-9201, www.leedco.org
