Amazon-Shell HKN Offshore Wind Slated for 2023 Launch (Int'l.)

In the Netherlands, the Amazon-Shell HKN (Hollandse Kust Noord) Offshore Wind Project is targeting a 2023 launch. The project will comprise a floating solar park, short-term battery storage, optimally tuned turbines, and "green hydrogen" made by electrolysis as a further storage technique.

The offshore wind farm will be operated by the Crosswind Consortium, a joint venture between energy companies Shell and Eneco, and have an overall capacity of 759MW, half of which is being purchased by Amazon to power its European operations .

The project is the e-commerce giant's largest single-site renewables project to date. In December, Amazon announced it will invest in 26 wind and solar projects totaling 3.4GW of electricity production capacity. ENECO, Borealis Ink Belgian Offshore Wind PPA (Int'l Report)

Austrian chemicals and fertilizers producer Borealis Group is reporting a l10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for more than 1,000 GWh of electricity from the 235-MW Mermaid offshore wind farm that is being installed in Belgian waters. Power deliveries are slated to begin in January 2021.

Part of the 487-MW SeaMade cluster, the Mermaid wind farm will incorporate 28 Siemens wind turbine and come online at the end of this year. The Dutch utility ENECO has exclusive rights to the Mermaid project's power production. Mitsubishi, Chubu JV Completes €4.1Bn Enco Acquisition (M&A)

In Japan, Mitsubishi Corp and Chubu Electric Power Co Inc are reporting their Amsterdam-based joint venture Diamond Chubu Europe BV has completed the €4.1 billion ($4.4 billion) acquisition of Dutch energy company Eneco. Mitsubishi holds 80 pct of Diamond Chubu Europe BV with Chubu holding the remaining 20 pct.

Rotterdam-headquartered Eneco invests in wind, solar and biomass plants as well as green district heating primarily in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and has an installed renewable energy capacity of around 1.2 GW. Microsoft Netherlands to Run on Offshore Wind Energy (Ind. Report)

IT giant Microsoft reports the inking of a 15-year agreement with Eneco to purchase 90MW of power from the 731.5MW Borssele III & IV offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea. The contracted wind power will power Microsoft's datacenters for a period of fifteen years from 2022 onward.

The Borssele III & IV wind farm is being developed by the Blauwwind consortium -- Partners Group, Shell, Eneco,Van Oord -- and will incorporate 77 MHI Vestas 9.5MW wind turbines installed 22km offshore Zeeland. The project is slated for commissioning and operation in 2021. NEC Commissions Europe's Largest Energy Storage System (Int'l)

Boston-based smart energy storage solutions specialist NEC Energy Solutions (NEC) is reporting the completion and commissioning of a 48 MW, 50 MWh energy storage system in Jardelund, Germany, for EnspireME -- joint venture between Netherlands headquartered Eneco and Mitsubishi Corporation.

Eneco and Mitsubishi Corporation will investigate connecting the storage system battery to local wind farms, providing further value for wind farm owners by storing excess electricity generated during periods of curtailment.

NEC provided turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services which included its GSS® end-to-end grid storage solution and its AEROS® proprietary energy storage controls software. The system, Europe's largest, incorporates approximately 10,000 lithium-ion battery modules that are enough to store power for about 5,300 German households for 24 hours.
