Mitsui Plans $1.8Bn Investment by 2023 to Cut Emissions (Int'l.)

Japanese maritime shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. is reporting a plan to invest $1.8 billion over the next three years to achieve zero emissions from its fleet by 2050 and to develop new carbon-neutral businesses.

To that end, the company is looking at initiatives and technologies designed to improve the performance of its shipping fleet and cut emissions. Mitsui is also investigating new business lines tied to the emerging technologies including offshore wind, wave energy, alternative fuels, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), LNG bunkering and liquefied CO2 ocean transport, according to a release. The UK's University of Birmingham Vehicle and Engine Technology Research Centre and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) are reporting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to identify joint research interests in the fields of air quality and emissions management, alternative fuels and related clean transportation concerns.

The University of Birmingham Centre works closely with UK industry in engine architecture and advanced engine technologies, helping to design the engines and fuels for the future. ARAI is India's premier automotive research and development institute set up by the automotive industry with the government of India.

As part of the cooperation, the partners will work to develop and deliver hi-tech and environment-friendly vehicle systems, alternative fuels, and create a blueprint to tackle the challenge of particulate emissions in India. The partners also plan to support the development of transportation-related education programmes that will help produce future transportation researchers and industry leaders. Expected 2021 Renewable Energy Trends and Predictions from ENVIVA (Opinions, Editorials & Asides)

  • Together renewable fuels will further displace coal and natural gas -- As countries take aggressive action on climate change to decarbonize their respective economies by 2050, the direction is clear -- all carbon-neutral and carbon-negative renewable fuels will need to work together if we want to achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century. As the global energy demand for alternative fuels increase, 2021 will mark a turning point for the industry as wind, solar, geothermal, woody biomass, hydrogen, and lithium-ion battery energy providers (among others) make a collective and coordinated effort to combat the global climate crisis.

  • The aftermath of COVID-19 will push economies into a renewable future -- The COVID-19 pandemic has forever changed how societies, businesses, and governments view the world. As various industries saw a decline in the demand for products and/or services throughout the pandemic, the energy industry witnessed the opposite. Energy production and distribution remained essential regardless of the pandemic.

    Throughout the pandemic we've seen an increased global interest in reducing carbon emissions. Looking ahead, we expect renewable fuels will continue to play a crucial role in power generation for decades to come. For this reason, we don't foresee a job loss, rather a job transfer -- or perhaps a job boom - in renewables in 2021. For those currently working in fossil fuels, this shift will present a great opportunity to transition skills as the energy sector continues to evolve into a clean energy future.

  • Europe will continue to be the "Poster Child" for renewable energy implementation, but there will be some regulatory uncertainty. -- Delivering Europe's long-term ambition to become the first climate neutral continent by 2050 requires an extensive set of urgent measures to scale up action. At the very least, the world-leading sustainability criteria established by the Renewable Energy Directive II (REDII) will need to be fully implemented by all member states if Europe plans to meet their 2030 and 2050 emission reduction goals. At best, member states will need to further amend the directive if they wish to succeed in cutting carbon emissions by 55 pct in the next decade from 1990 levels.

  • Bioenergy is the largest renewable energy source in the EU and will be critical to increased deployment of wind and solar -- The use of bioenergy has more than doubled since 2000 as a result of its end-use as heat, transportation, and electricity. In fact, biomass is the only renewable fuel on the market that is readily available today and can replace fossil fuels for heat generation. In heavy industries such as steel, aluminum and cement, sustainably sourced wood-based biomass offers a carbon-neutral fuel replacement for coal and gas-fired furnaces (and combined heat and power plants). As a dependable and dispatchable renewable fuel, sustainably-sourced biomass represents a prime solution to complement the intermittency of wind and solar (among other renewables) that will reduce carbon emissions by more than 85% on a lifecycle basis.

  • Biomass to assist the development and deployment of a hydrogen economy -- Looking ahead to more future-oriented solutions, such as the development of the hydrogen economy, biomass is projected to play an important role. The most obvious is to use biomass directly to create hydrogen through gasification and thereby avoid carbon emissions that are associated with natural gas. Even further down the road, when surplus solar and wind could potentially be used to create hydrogen at scale, there will be an exciting opportunity to produce aviation and other fuels with carbon capture of biomass that could result in even fewer net greenhouse gas emissions. Likewise, as decarbonization efforts in the steel and cement industry rapidly increase, they too will look to bioenergy solutions for support.

  • BECCS on the short rise -- Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is one of the very few options on the table that can remove carbon from the atmosphere. Once matured, BECCS could mark the beginning of a new era for low-carbon fuel applications that will enable us to meet and/or exceed international net zero targets while still enjoying air travel and heavy goods transport, which is difficult and very expensive to decarbonize. We expect 2021 will be the year that we see true progress in climate change mitigation, as a result of new initiatives/policies, new innovations, and new collaborations that are already taking shape.

  • Energy Efficiency Key in UK PM's Green Ind. Plan (Int'l. Report)

    In London, UK Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled his 10-point plan for a "green"--low-carbon industrial revolution. The PM's plan calls for "a major effort to increase residential and public building energy efficiency".

    The plan also calls for: a concerted development and deployment of: offshore wind; small-scale nuclear; electric vehicles and alternative fuels; increased use of public mass transit; hydrogen; carbon capture and storage (CCS) "clusters" where groups of power stations, factories or industrial plants could be linked to CCUS infrastructure for greater efficiency and cost savings; ecosystem funding for tree planting, peatland restoration and similar programs to store carbon; and a wholesale, economy-wide shift away from fossil fuels to a low-carbon energy clean future.     Alternative Fuels, Clean Diesel Funding Offered in Michigan (Funding)

    In Lansing, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) reports the availability of $322,800 in funding for clean diesel and alternative fuel engine and equipment replacement projects under a competitive grant request for proposals.

    The 2020-22 Michigan Clean Diesel Program RFP targets efforts to replace old diesel equipment, vehicles and engines with cleaner alternative fuel, electric or hybrid versions. Cities, townships, villages, county governmental agencies, public school districts, private schools, public transit agencies, port authorities, metropolitan planning organizations, nonprofit organizations or private businesses can apply for the grants.

    DTU Researching Biomass Alternative Fuels (Int'l., R&D)

    The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby is working with the Synfuel Project on a way to efficiently convert biomass and wind energy into green methanol. This methanol can then be used as fuel for ships. It can also be used to replace diesel and kerosene after processing.

    Through this project, the university is offering a solution for storing energy from biomass and wind sources. It can then be used to make fuel for aircraft and ships, among other things. This technology is being developed with funding from the Innovation Fund Denmark.

    According to DTU chemical engineering researcher Jesper Ahrenfeldt, the Synfuel project uses hydrogen in a Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) to make a liquid fuel. Synthesis gas is a mixture consisting of hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide that is released during the gasification of biomass. Straw was used for this in this project.     "There is a great need in heavy-duty applications (e.g. long-haul trucking, construction, agriculture, marine and back-up power generation) for technologies that provide diesel-like performance but which are decoupled from the dirty emissions of diesel fuel. ClearFlame's mission is to break the bond between diesel engines and their fuel to create the fastest path to a sustainable future, equitably distributed to all the places that might be initially under-served by alternative solutions.

    Electrification is important, but it requires extensive infrastructure expansion. This is expensive and will take decades, and until that expansion is complete, little benefit is achieved in reducing climate change or improving air quality in the front-line communities that are harmed most by pollution. We cannot wait that long.

    "We believe the solution is our technology allows climate-friendly, renewable, decarbonized fuels to be used at the highest possible efficiency. Our technology can be adopted quickly. It uses existing liquid refueling infrastructure, and operators get the performance they expect while also relying on the existing base of engine technicians for service. Our solution provides "near-zero" emissions that are an order of magnitude better than even the cleanest diesel-fueled engines and is the fastest way for reducing CO2 emissions from heavy-duty engines. "Low carbon, renewable fuels are generally characterized as low in reactivity as measured by cetane number. These alternative fuels have historically required use of spark-ignited engines which have lower efficiency and are bore-size limited compared to compression ignition (Diesel) engines. These fuels were thought to be incompatible with compression ignition engines which traditionally require easily ignitable fuels.

    ClearFlame uses a high-temperature combustion system that overcomes cetane limitations. We are using insulation strategies and calibration changes like reduced charge air cooling and increased EGR to increase combustion temperatures just enough so that lower cetane fuels like alcohols will ignite reliably with short ignition delays. There is no fuel blending, no spark plugs and no petroleum. The ClearFlame combustion process leverages the no/low soot characteristics of alternative bio or e-fuels and produces engine-out exhaust with ultra-low PM levels that does not require a DPF. Further, because the engine is no longer smoke-limited, the air-fuel ratio is changed from lean to stoichiometric using "clean" EGR for dilution at lower loads, improving volumetric efficiency/power density, and leaving an exhaust stream suitable for 3-way catalysis. The SCR after-treatment system can be eliminated in favor of a 3-way catalytic converter allowing a substantial cost reduction and improvement in NOx reduction efficiency. DEF/AdBlue/urea is no longer required and system reliability is improved.

    The value added by being able to change fuels is tremendous because a very high efficiency combustion process can now be paired with use of 100 pct renewable, clean fuels providing a combination that surpasses all other alternatives in terms of CO2 mitigation, reduced criteria emissions and lower costs.

    ClearFlame Engine Technologies recognizes the importance of developing renewably-fueled combustion-based alternatives that complement electrification enabling sustainability in applications where liquid fuels will remain necessary.

    CEC Earmarks $384Mn for Zero-Emissions Transport (Ind. Report)

    In Sacramento, the California Energy Commission (CEC) is reporting approval of a $384 million plan focused on closing gaps in zero-emission fuels and infrastructure to support Governor Gavin Newsom's executive order phasing out the sale of new gasoline-powered passenger vehicles by 2035.

    The 2020-2023 Investment Plan Update for the CEC's Clean Transportation Program -- fka the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program -- prioritizes funding for zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure, related workforce development and manufacturing.

    The plan approved the following: $132.9 million for light-duty EV charging infrastructure; $129.8 mn for medium- and heavy-duty ZEVs and infrastructure; $70 mn for hydrogen refueling infrastructure; $25 mn for zero-and near-zero-carbon fuel production and supply; $10 mn for COVID-19 recovery and reinvestment; $9 mn for ZEV manufacturing and $7.5 mn for workforce development.

    U.S. House Advances Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (Reg. & Leg.)

    Legislation that would authorize a federal emissions reduction program and fund research and development for technologies across the environmental sector recently passed in the U.S. House of Representatives.

    The legislation authorizes ans earmarks over $2 billion for the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA)intended to advance improvements in air quality through the mitigation of diesel emissions. Specifically, the bill would authorize $500 million for each of fiscal years 2021 through 2025.

    Sustainable Aviation Fuel Guide Launched (Ind. Report)

According to the coalition, the free online guide was designed to serve as a resource on topics such as the practicalities of SAF development, industry adoption and pending expansion of supply and use. Fueling the Future is an updated edition of a SAF guide published by the coalition in 2018.

    In addition to the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), the SAF Coalition is made up of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI), European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) and National Air Transportation Association (NATA).     PA. DEP Offers Alternative Fuels Project Funding (Funding Report)

    In Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently awarded more than $2.1 million in 2019 Alternative Fuel Incentive Grants (AFIG) to 18 cleaner fuel vehicle projects.

    The program supports liquefied propane gas, biodiesel, CNG, ethanol and other cleaner fuels as replacement for older gasoline -- or diesel-fueled vehicles with cleaner-fuel vehicles to reduce emissions of harmful pollutants. The program also provides fueling stations for these vehicles.

    Businesses, organizations, local governments, and schools are eligible for grants which are administered under the Pennsylvania Alternative Fuels Incentive Act of 2004.     Decarbonizing Shipping: All Hands on Deck Launched (Ind. Report)

    The Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell, Deloitte Netherlands and Deloitte UK have released their Decarbonizing Shipping: All Hands on Deck report -- a roadmap to decarbonize maritime shipping.

    The report investigates alternative fuels such as biofuels, liquefied natural gas, and hydrogen, to help meet the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) regulations and calls for the maritime shipping industry to at least halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 while reducing CO2 emissions intensity by at least 40 pct by 2030, rising to 70 pct by 2050, relative to a 2008 baseline.

    To that end, the research report found that industry stakeholders should prioritize five solutions over the next few years -- scale-up customer demand; global regulatory alignment; cross-sector R&D; scale-up controlled pilot projects; coordinated industry commitment. The report also notes reducing emissions from the current fleet can be partially achieved by implementing operational measures such as lubricant quality, digitalization, and the use of data and smart navigation strategies.

  • Accelerate the development of new technologies and capabilities for future low emission products, including pioneering the electrification of flight;

  • Achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions from operations and facilities by 2030, by using 100 pct renewable energy, closed loop manufacturing techniques on high value metals, and deploy our cutting-edge microgrid capabilities.

    The global Race To Zero campaign mobilizes a coalition of leading net zero initiatives, representing 449 cities, 21 regions, 992 businesses, 38 of the biggest investors, and 505 universities. These "real economy" actors join 120 countries in the largest ever alliance committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest.     "And now for something entirely different!" -- Pyongyang Recommends Charcoal Fueled Vehicles to Cut Emissions (Int'l.)

    In Pyongyang, in an effort to address the growing problem of vehicle emissions and air pollution, the President Donald Trump's new friend's Ministry of Land and Environment Protection has reportedly begun a wide-ranging crack down on "problematic diesel-fueled vehicles vehicles" and have implemented a ban on their importation and future operation with the exception of Cargo trucks weighing more than five tons which are considered "essential for the economy."

    The authorities also called on drivers to use alternative fuels, including the "active use of charcoal-powered vehicles." (Source: Daily NK, 7 May, 2020)

    A Bioenergy & Alternative Fuels report subscriber noted the following:

    First, the 40 million acres, more or less, of managed southern pine plantations are loblolly pine not longleaf pine. These two pine varieties have important differences in growth rate and ecological values.

    Second, and more much importantly, mature pine forest do not 'accelerate' their storage as they mature. These are privately owned lands and the details of the site and management practices are very important, but the annually growth rate (carbon accumulation) on most pine sites slows after 15-20 years. The TOTAL carbon on the acre/hectare increase, but at a slower annual rate.

    Finally, and completely absent from these discussion that are typically led by scientist or environmental groups who do not have a clear understanding of the on the ground ownership and motivations of private landowners in the southern US, is that without a source of income some of these forest will be converted to some other uses, probably pasture, which has very limited carbon storage potential. In effect these EU experts are trying to shift the costs of carbon sequestration to private landowners. One can argue that if they want to sequester carbon in trees, and take on the additional risk of unplanned, large scale release from fire, disease or hurricane, that is fine, but they should pay the landowner for the carbon and the lost income.

    The comprehensive study evaluates the characteristics of liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol, biodiesel, and hydrogen, and outlines ways to incorporate them into existing ship systems. The study also provides short-, medium- and long-term measures, for shipping companies to overcome challenges in incorporating alternative fuels into their value chain and outlines how companies can use alternative fuels to help meet the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets of at least 50 pct, compared to the levels in 2008.

    Alternative Fuel Vehicles Outselling Diesel in UK (Int'l Report)

    In the UK, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is reporting sales of alternative fuel vehicles have overtaken diesel in the UK new car market for the first time as the Coronavirus crisis.

    In March, diesel's market share dropped from 25.7 pct to 17.6 pct compared with March 2019, while for the first three months of the year, diesel's share fell from 26.8 pct to 18.9 pct compared to Q1 last year.

    Alternative fuels, covering all plug-in cars and hybrids, saw their market share nearly triple during Q1, reaching 20.6 pct of car sales, compared to 7.9 pct last year. During March, the market share of alternative fuels was 22 pct, compared to 7.8 pct for March 2019.

    Proposal must include R&D cooperation between two companies or cooperation between a company and a university/research institution - one from the U.S. and one from Israel. The proposal should have significant commercial potential and the project outcome should lead to commercialization.

    Examples of research and development topics within the scope of this call are: Solar and Wind Power, Advanced Vehicle Technologies and Alternative Fuels, Natural Gas and other associated technologies, Smart Grid, Storage, Water-Energy Nexus, Advanced Manufacturing or any other Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency technology. This year the topic of AI for Energy Management has also been added to the scope. The conditional grant per project is up to 50 pct of the R&D costs associated with the joint project, and up to a maximum of $1 million per project.

    Heathrow Claims 93 pct Emissions Cut (Int'l. Report)

    In the UK, carbon neutral Heathrow Airport reports it has cut emissions 93 pct since 1990 after investing £100 million in energy efficiency measures and onsite power generation facilities. Heathrow noted it uses strictly "Clean" energy as needed, purchased carbon credits for 2019-21, and aims to achieve zero emissions from its operations within the next fifteen years.

    As we previously reported, Heathrow's four-part action plan to reduce and offset the growth in emissions builds on the momentum of technological change within the aviation industry to make travel more sustainable. The plan outlines action on four key areas including: cleaner aircraft performance and technology; improvements to airspace and ground operations; increased use of sustainable aviation fuels; and developing and promoting new carbon offsetting technologies and options. Additionally, Heathrow is calling on the ICAO -- the UN body for international aviation -- to develop global goals for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels, and calling for the UK Government to engage ICAO and fellow member states to agree on a 2050 carbon emissions reduction goal for international aviation

    CEMEX Commits to Cutting Cement Production CO2 Emissions (Int'l.)

    Global building materials and cement company CEMEX reports it supports the urgency of collective action to ensure compliance by all parties in the implementation of the Paris Agreement commitments and the fulfilment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Climate Action.

    To that CEMEX has been working to cut cement production related carbon emissions through investing in energy efficiency, using alternative fuels, increasing its use of renewable energy and increasing clinker substitution through alternative cementitious materials. Through these efforts the company has achieved a reduction of more than 22 pct in net specific CO2 emissions compared to a 1990 baseline.

    In 2019 CEMEX announced a goal to reduce 30 pct of its CO2 net emissions by 2030, but has raised its 30 pct taget to 35 pct our CO2net emissions by 2030, aligned with the Science-Based Targets Methodology.

    In 2019, Clean Energy announced plans to exclusively offer zero-carbon1 Redeem at all of its fueling stations by 2025. At this pace Clean Energy would outdistance other alternative fuels, according to the release.

    In Sacramento, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has released a list of CARB-certified, third-party verifiers to provide program quality control of alternative fuels and the state's Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).

    All verifiers must meet specific requirements that include prescreening for education and professional experience and completion of required training. Individual accredited verifiers work in teams under the direction of companies accredited by CARB as LCFS verification bodies.

    The LCFS program is designed to lower the carbon intensity in fuels by assessing each step in their production, from extraction to combustion. Fuels are compared to an annually declining baseline. If a fuel has a carbon intensity above that baseline it generates a deficit for the producer. If the intensity is below the baseline it can generate credits which may then be sold to a producer who has a deficit.     Clean Energy Fuels Growing Redeem™ RNG Deliveries (Ind Report)

    On the Way to Green Fuels? Israelis Grow CO2 Consuming Bacteria (Int'l Report, R&D)

    In Israel, researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science have developed bacteria that survives solely on carbon dioxide (CO2) from their surroundings, instead of their regular food. The findings point to the possible future development of carbon-neutral alternative fuels.

    The study , which was reported in the scientific journal Cell identified crucial genes for the process of carbon fixation, through which plants take carbon from CO2 to turn it into biomass. The research team added and rewired the needed genes to the bacteria. They also inserted a gene that allowed the bacteria to get energy from a readily available substance called formate, which can be produced directly from electricity and air.

    The bacteria were gradually weaned off the sugar they were used to consuming and developed a taste for CO2. The researchers believe that the bacteria's new diet could ultimately be healthy for the planet.

    biotech companies use corn syrup for cell cultures to produce commodity chemicals. Such cells could be induced to live on a diet of CO2 and electricity and spare the large amounts of corn syrup they live on today.

    According to the study, bacteria could be further adapted to use renewable electricity, rather than taking their energy from a substance such as formate, and then store energy for later use. Such bio-fuel would be carbon-neutral, a crucial green development in the battle against climate change.     In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania officials report the Keystone State is participating in the U.S. Department of Transportation's Alternative Fuel Corridors program aimed at reducing electric vehicle range anxiety by filling in charging station gaps and increasing the availability CNG, propane, ethanol and other alternative fuels outside its major cities.

    The Alternative Fuel Corridors program was created in 2015 under the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act which authorized $305 billion through 2020 to make infrastructure upgrades, including a provision to designate national road corridors for electric vehicle charging and alternative fuels fueling stations. More than 135,000 miles of highway in 46 states and Washington D.C. are presently in various stages of participation in the program.

    Pennsylvania, which has designated 1,813 miles of Alternative Fuel Corridors, is also participating in the Transportation Climate Initiative, a regional collaboration among 12 Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states and Washington D.C. working to reduce transportation carbon emissions.     China Promoting Methanol Fueled Cars to Cut Emissions (Int'l)

    Congress Lobbied to Reinstate Alt-Fuel Tax Credit (Reg & Leg)

    More than 700 transportation fuel related industry organizations representing users, retailers, customers, fleet managers, utilities, and producers of clean alternative transportation fuels submitted the following Chairmen Grassley and Neal, and Ranking Members Wyden and Brady:

    "We ask your support for including a reinstatement of the $0.50/gallon alternative fuels tax credit (AFTC) in a fiscal year 2019 government spending package. The AFTC is a credit of $0.50 per gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) of certain transportation fuels, including natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, P Series Fuels, liquefied hydrogen and others.

    " Extending the AFTC retroactively for 2018 and prospectively for 2019 will allow businesses and customers to continue to deploy cleaner alternative fuel technologies. A full five-year extension of the AFTC would provide business certainty along with a significant contribution to our nation's economic growth.

    "Unfortunately, the credit has currently lapsed as of December 31, 2017 and many fleets, businesses, and manufacturers are unable to plan future investments as they manage current uncertainty. Immediately reinstating the AFTC for 2018 and 2019 is necessary to encouraging further deployment of new, clean transportation technology.

    " Extending the AFTC will bring significant environmental benefits, improved air quality, and enhance our energy independence by lowering our dependence on foreign oil. Renewal of the AFTC also promotes increased private sector investment in infrastructure and equipment, which leads to more jobs and economic output."
