Triton's Offshore Wind Anchoring System Scores Funding (Funding)

In the Bay State, Chelmsford-based Triton Systems Inc. is reporting receipt of $1.3 million funding from the National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium (Consortium) and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) to support Triton's Helical Anchor Group Installation System (HAGIS), a low cost, flexible anchoring system for small- and large-scale offshore wind farms. The company previously received $1.1 million from the U.S. DOE to develop the technology.

Triton's patent-pending HAGIS anchoring system: can be applied to any offshore wind platform or mooring configuration; minimizes acoustic impact on the environment and sea life; can be easily removed for decommissioning; is scalable and applicable to many types of subsea foundations beyond offshore wind; and delivers cost savings by lower manufacturing (40 pct) and installation costs (25 pct reduction). Nat. Offshore Wind R&D Consort. Projects Announced (Ind. Report)
National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium

The National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium, which was established with funding from U.S. DOE, has selected 15 new projects to receive a total of $8 million for offshore wind support structure innovation, U.S.-based supply chain development, electrical systems innovation, and solutions for impacts on wildlife and radar.

The selections announced today include:

  • Four projects to develop innovative support structures (including foundations and moorings) for very large fixed-bottom and floating offshore wind turbines to achieve economies of scale;

  • Three projects that propose innovative solutions to supply chain and installation challenges including spiral welded towers, a self-positioning blade installation tool, and unmanned aerial devices for inspections;

  • Five projects to support innovations in grid interconnection and transmission;

  • Three technology development projects to mitigate use conflicts, including wildlife monitoring and radar interference. The 15 new projects bring the Consortium’s total funding portfolio to $28 million for 40 projects. This announcement supports a goal to deploy 30 gigawatts of U.S. offshore wind by 2030.

    DOE established the National Offshore Wind R&D Consortium in 2018 to address research priorities for offshore wind as defined in the National Offshore Wind Strategy, which was developed jointly by DOE and the DOI Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).

    The Consortium is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) with DOE and NYSERDA each providing $20.5 million to fund high-impact research projects that lower the costs of U.S. offshore wind.

  • $10.3Mn in Offshore Wind R&D Grants Announced (Ind. Report)

    The not-for-profit National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium (the Consortium) is reporting the selection of 12 projects for contract negotiation, completing its first solicitation for offshore wind research and development technology projects.

    The 12 awards totaling $10.3 million will support a variety of research areas, including comprehensive U.S. supply chain analyses, studying the impacts of offshore wind on the electric grid system and innovations in anchoring structures. The awarded projects include:

  • Demonstration of Shallow-Water Mooring Components for FOWTs (ShallowFloat)-- Principle Power Inc.;

  • Design and Certification of Taut-synthetic Moorings for Floating Wind Turbines -- University of Maine;

  • Dual-Functional Tuned Inerter Damper for Enhanced Semi-Sub Offshore Wind Turbine -- Virginia Tech University;

  • Innovative Anchoring System for Floating Offshore Wind, Triton Systems Inc.:

  • Techno-Economic Mooring Configuration and Design for Floating Offshore Wind -- University of Massachusetts Amherst.

    As the first federally-funded public-private partnership focused on advancing offshore wind technology in the U.S., the Consortium supports the cost-effective and responsible development of offshore wind to maximize the economic benefit to the country.

    Virginia, Massachusetts and Maryland also contribute to the Consortium's funding. NYSERDA administered the initial solicitation on behalf of the Consortium.   • RCAM Technologies Concrete Wind Foundation Project (Ind. Report)

    US start-up RCAM Technologies reports it has been selected by and received funding from the National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium for contract negotiations as part of the consortium's second round of wind research and development projects. RCAM's award, which is one of two totaling $1.9 million, will go towards "proving the feasibility and advance the design" of the company's modular "3D Printing" concrete foundation.

    The two-year project scope includes the conceptual design, preliminary design, and feasibility assessment of the fixed-bottom, suction-bucket support structure and heavy-lift-vessel alternative for the US DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 15MW reference turbine.

    According to its website, RCAM Technologies was "founded to develop concrete additive manufacturing technologies initially for wind energy technologies -- RCAM's vision for wind energy is to develop land-based and offshore wind turbine towers and substructures up to 200-meter tall at half the cost of conventional tall tower technologies."     Consortium Funds Offshore Wind Anchorage Study (R&D, Funding)

    The new federally-funded U.S. National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium reports awarding its first contract to the U.S. DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The $300,000 award will support NREL's work on the economic feasibility of shared mooring lines to cut deep-water floating wind farm costs by connecting adjacent turbine platforms and distributing load, resulting in fewer anchors and considerable savings.

    The DOE-created consortium is funded with $20 million to conduct research and development to address technological barriers and lower the costs and risks of offshore wind in the United States. To that end, DOE and Department of the Interior (DOI) identified the following research areas to facilitate the development of the U.S. offshore wind industry: wind plant technology advancement; wind resource and physical site characterization, and; installation, operations and maintenance, and supply chain technology solutions.
