In the UK, London-headquartered oil industry major BP is reporting an agreement to purchase a 50 pct stake in two US projects -- Empire Wind and Beacon Wind -- from Norway's Equinor for $1.1 billion. Under the agreement, BP and Equinor will also jointly develop four assets located offshore New York and Massachusetts. The deal is expected to close in early 2021.

EDF's 87MW Moroccan Wind Project Underway (Int'l. Report)

EDF Renewables and its Japanese partner Mitsui report construction is underway on the 87MW first 27-turbine phase of the Taza wind project in Morocco, North Africa. EDF Renewables and Mitsui will respectively hold 60 pct and 40 pct interests in the project which is expected to come online early in 2022.

The project secured financing by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), MUFG Bank and the Moroccan bank Bank of Africa, and has a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) in place. UK Climate Assembly Rejects CCS (Int'l. Report)

The UK's Climate Assembly has released its recommended approaches to meeting the UK's legally binding target to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Of the recommendations, 95 pct of climate assembly members backed the use of offshore wind technology to contribute towards the country's climate neutrality goal while 81 pct supported solar power and 78 pct onshore wind and 40 pct backed the use of bioenergy.

22 pct favored the continued use of fossil fuels combined with carbon capture and storage (CCS) which "only provides a short-term, expensive solution when better alternatives are available" according to 56 pct of the Climate Assembly members.

This contrasts with UK government support for the technologies. In March it pledged £800 million for CCS development, while in July it announced a £100 million investment in direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) R&D.

Iberdrola's Channel Offshore Wind Project Progressing (Int'l. Report)

Spanish utility Iberdrola SA is reporting progress in the development of Saint Brieuc, its first commercial-scale offshore wind project in Brittany.

The €2.4 billion, 62-turbine project is expected to generate sufficient power for 835,000 people and avoid 100,000 tpy of CO2 emissions.

An Eiffage Metal and Engie Solutions JV will be in charge of the engineering and construction of the project's substation foundation and topside that houses the transformers and electrical equipment. ENGIE Solutions will carry out final assembly work and commissioning tests.

Fabrication work will be carried out by Eiffage in Belgium and Poland with a scheduled completion date early in 2022.

Over the next four years, Iberdrola notes it plans to invest up to €4 billion in offshore wind over the next four years. The company presently has operating facilities in the Irish Sea, in German waters of the Baltic and in the North Sea. The company has an installed capacity of 32,695 MW and a renewable energy project pipeline exceeding 58,000 MW, according to the news release. In the Motor City, DTE Energy is reporting the upgrading of its MIGreenPower voluntary renewable energy plan to bring an additional 420 MW of solar energy online by 2022. Per the updated plan, the new solar assets will source clean energy purchases from corporate, municipal and industrial customers participating in the company's MIGreenPower program.

If approved by the the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) DTE would increase its solar generation capacity by nearly ten times by 2022 when its wind and solar energy portfolio would generate sufficient energy to power 900,000 homes as well as offset approximately 4.7 million tons of CO2e.

DTE's energy generation portfolio presently has 15 wind parks and 31 solar farms capable of producing enough clean energy to power more than 500,000 homes. with plans to add three additional wind parks to its portfolio by the end of 2020. Siemens Gamesa to Install Wind Turbines in Morocco (Int'l. Report)

In Madrid, Spanish wind energy giant Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy reports it will install 87 wind turbines covered by a 5-year service agreement at a 300-MW wind farm north-east of the city of Boujdour in southern Morocco. The roughly $435.4 million project is expected to come online in Q3, 2022.

The Boujdour wind farm, which is owned by a consortium of Moroccan energy company Nareva and Italian Enel Green Power, was acquired by the consortium in 2016 as part of an 850-MW tender under the Moroccan Integrated Wind Power Project.

Morocco aims to source 52 pct of its installed electrical capacity from renewable energy sources by 2030. In the UK, the Sussex-based Saffron Building Society reports the launch of a retro-fit mortgage which offers a reduced rate if the borrower improves their EPC -- building energy efficiency -- rating after six months.

The mortgage is aimed at people planning to move to an older or period property and need to remortgage or upgrade on their existing home. The "green"mortgage offers the borrower a rate relief for the remainder of the fixed rate period, when the works undertaken on the property produce a one-step rise in the EPC rating -- as long as this is above an E.

Saffron's retro-fit, energy efficiency mortgage comes in the month the government is launching its Green Homes Initiative which offers up to £5,000 for cavity wall insulation, window and door glazing, solar panel installations and other energy efficiency improvements and upgrades to existing buildings. Communities accepted into the Partners in Energy initiative work with an Xcel Energy team that provides guidance, education, and resources for city staff, businesses and residents as they work to achieve measurable energy goals by a specified target date. While each community's energy action plan is unique, all plans identify strategies to meet specific goals. Green Building Certification Launched in Namibia (Int'l. Report)

In Namibia, the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC) reports it is partnering with Bank Windhoek to launch Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) software that will enable the certification of green buildings to facilitate their financing. The EDGE initiative also aims to compensate for the lack of a local certification body.

EDGE software allows the evaluation of a building's energy consumption, energy efficiency and overall "green" features including: low-flow faucets to reduce water consumption; wastewater management systems; efficient HVAC systems; insulation; green building materials and others.

In the Golden State, according to a plan developed by utility Southern California Edison (SCE), if California is to meet it goal of becoming carbon neutral within 25 years the state's electric power grid will need to deliver 100 pct clean power to consumers through the addition of more wind, solar, and energy storage capacity.

SCE also foresees half of the state's households having solar panels and vehicles and buildings running primarily on electricity. The utility estimates that 75 pct of cars , space and water heating need to be electric by 2045.

US Wind Power Capacity Continues to Rise (Ind. Report)

According to a report from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), the U.S. wind industry added more than 1,800 MW of new capacity in the first quarter of 2020 due to the spring peaks and renewable generation and reduced electrical demand due to the country's COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

The report notes that 9 GW of new wind power capacity, representing an investment of $13 billion, was installed in the U.S. in 2019 and wind energy output rose to more than 7 pct of the entire nation's electricity supply, more than 10 pct in 14 states, and over 40 pct in Iowa and Kansas. The nine gigawatts power generation is slightly more than in each of the four previous years.

An added factor to the heightened wind power capacity is prices, which have fallen to $700 -- $850/kW. The average cost of wind projects installation in 2019 was $1,440/kW, down more than 40 percent since the peak in 2009 and 2010. That brings the average cost of electricity produced from wind to $36 per MWh down from the $85-90/MWh range seen a decade ago. Wind has maintained its cost lead over natural gas electricity, although solar electricity has caught up in the last few years. The report says that wind power will gradually get cheaper. Egyptians, Danes Ink Green Energy Dev. Agreement (Int'l. Report)

In Cairo, the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation and the Minister of Electricity are reporting an agreement with the Danish Energy Agency for a 2019-2022 Egyptian-Danish Energy Partnership Program aimed at helping Egypt shift towards low-carbon new and renewable energy.

Under the agreement, the Danes and Egyptians will form a joint committee to develop comprehensive plans and initiatives to utilize renewable energy and consolidate commercial relations and share technologies to further integration in wind energy and other renewable energy projects. The 2035 energy strategy is intended to increase renewable energy's shares of Egypt's electric power generation capacity by by 42 pct, according to the release.

JA Solar Supplying S.Korean Hybrid Solar-Wind Project (Int'l. Report)

Beijing-based PV products manufacturer JA Solar reports it will supply modules to the 133-MW hybrid solar-wind Yeongam Solar Power Generation Project which is being constructed by South Korea's EPC LS Electric in South Jeolla Province, South Korea. The 93 MW PV section of the facility will be deployed on the grounds of an existing 40 MW wind farm.

The facility, which is planned to be connected to a battery capacity of 242 MWh, is being developed by Korean wind specialist Daemyoung Energy which will sell renewable energy certificates (RECs) from solar power generation to local utility Korea South-East Power Co. under a 20-year contract. US Solar, Wind Output Drive U.S. Renewables' Rise (Ind. Report)

According to the just released US Energy Information Administration (EIA) Electric Power Monthly Report for the period January -- June 2020, solar-generated electricity -- including distributed solar -- jumped by 22 pct year-on-year and provided nearly 3.4 pct of the U.S. total. Wind was up 14.5 pct and accounted for more than 9.1 pct of total generation. Combined, net wind and solar power generation is 16.4 pct more than a year ago and generated 12.5 pct of total US electrical production during the first six months of 2020.

Together with hydropower, biomass, and geothermal, renewables provided 22.3 pct of total electrical output -- a 19.9 pct increase over the previous year. Renewables produced close to one-third more electricity than coal through June 2020.

Philippines Energy Storage Systems Due for Completion (Int'l. Report)

In the Philippines, SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. reports it expects to complete several battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 1,000 MWh by 2021. 470-MW projects would be completed this year until 1Q, 2021, while the remaining 530-MW projects will be finished by the second to fourth quarter next year.

The company said it "sees an opportunity to contract more than 2,200 MW in capacity across the Philippines representing uncontracted ASPA [ancillary service procurement agreement] requirements and non-firm ASPA contracts." Neoen Plans Massive Aussie Wind, Solar+Storage Project (Int'l.)

Paris-based independent renewable energy developer Neoen reports the filing of its development application for its $3 billion, 163-turbine Goyder South wind, solar and storage project in South Australia . The plan proposes a total of 1,200MW of wind energy, 600MW of solar PV, and 900MW/1800MWh of lithium-ion battery storage.

Each stage would be delivered in three equal tranches of 400MW wind, 200MW solar and 300MW/600MWh of lithium-ion battery storage. Combined, they would generate around 4.8 terawatt hours of zero emissions power each year, nearly doubling the current output of wind and solar in the state, and taking South Australia close to the Liberal government's net 100 pct renewables target just on its own.

Croatia Launching $32.2Mn Home Energy Efficiency Scheme (Int'l.)

In Zagreb, the Croatian Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency is launching HRK 203 million ($32.2 million) family homes energy efficiency upgrades grant program.

According to the agency website, Croatian family homes account to 65 pct of the country's housing stock and 40 pct of total energy consumption -- 70 pct of energy for heating, cooling, and hot water -- at the national level. The ministry estimates household energy consumption can be cut by as much as 60 pct.

Under the scheme, eligible applicants may qualify for grants to cover 60 pct of the costs of energy efficiency upgrades and renovations including: external wall insulation; replacement of windows and doors, and others energy efficiency upgrades.
