Vestas Touts 113 MW of European Wind Turbine Orders (Int'l)

Danish wind turbine giant Vestas Wind Systems A/S reports it has secured contracts to supply 113 MW of wind turbines for projects in Germany, Finland and Sweden.Vestas will supply two units of its V150-4.2 MW turbines to NOTUS energy Plan GmbH & Co KG for installation at the Lubbenow II and Lubbenow III wind parks in Germany in #q, 2019. EDP Renewables Opens Romanian Wind Energy Storage Facility (Int'l)

Madrid-headquartered renewables specialist EDP Renewables (EDPR) is reporting the opening of a pioneering battery-based wind energy storage facility at the 2012 vintage, 26-MW Cobadin Wind Farm in Romania. The facility is the first energy storage undertaking in Romania, according to the company's website.

EDP Renewables, the world's fourth-largest wind energy producer, is presently active in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, the UK, and the US. In 2017, the company generated 27.6 TWh through facilities with a combined installed capacity of 11 GW in 11 countries. Ill. Panther Creek Wind Farm Anticipate Groundbreaking (Ind. Report)

Shanbbona, Illinois-based FPL Energy Illinois Winds LLC reports it plans to soon break ground on the 25-turbine, $50 million Panther Creek Wind Farm just west of the city of Pittsfield. Whem fully operational in 2020, the farm will generate sufficient electric power for 18,000 area homes. The company is negotiating with Springfield-based Prairie Power on an interconnection agreement

Illinois presently has 2,632 operational wind turbines at 49 wind farms, which provided 6.2 pct of all in-state electricity production. Illinois' Renewable Portfolio Standard requires that utilities and retail electric suppliers generate 25 pct of their electricity sales from renewable energy sources like wind, solar and biomass energy by 2025. National Grid R.I. RfP Seeks 400-MW Renewables (Ind. Report)

Rhode Island's largest electric distribution company, National Grid, reports it has issued an RfP seeking proposals to contract up to 400 MW of renewable power and renewable energy certificates (RECs).

According to a notice last week by law firm Pierce Atwood, the Request for Proposals (RfP) is for renewable energy facilities with capacities of between 20 MW and 200 MW. The contracted period will be 10-15 years.

The competitive round is limited to "newly developed renewable energy resources" such as solar, wind, small hydro, eligible biomass, fuel cells, and waste-to-energy projects.

Each eligible candidate has to take part with at least one bid of 20 MW-200 MW and may also submit one or several alternative offers with capacities of between 200 MW and 400 MW. While projects do not have to be located within the state, they must "provide substantial direct economic benefits to Rhode Island, such as job creation or property tax revenues.

IEA Predicts 200 GW of European Offshore Wind by 2040 (Int'l)

Speaking at the Global Wind Summit on Tuesday, International Energy Agency (IEA) Exec. Dir. Fatih Birol predicted that wind energy would play "a critical role" in the world's energy mix over the coming decades. In Europe, offshore wind presently accounts for almost 5 pct of electricity generation and could generate as much as 1,100 TWh by 2040, Birol predicted.

According to Birol's prediction, not only will wind account for over 30 pct of Europe's electricity generation -- more than any other energy source -- Europe's offshore wind capacity is on track to reach nearly 200 GW by 2040, and could in fact go much higher.

Tidal Turbine Specialist Generates Private Investment (Int'l)

Eolus Vind Secures $119Mn Credit Agreement (Int'l. Report)

Renewables Now is reporting Hasselholm, Sweden-headquartered wind projects developer Eolus Vind AB has secured a 4-year, €101 million ($119 million) credit agreement with Swedbank. The funds will be used for expansion and to support new and ongoing projects and liquidity for daily operations.

Ratch Raises Final Mount Emerald Wind Farm Turbine (Int'l Report)

In the Land Down Under, Sydney, Australia-based Ratch Australian Corporation reports it has raised the last of 53 turbines at its $360 million, 180-MW Mount Emerald Wind Farm. The facility generated its first energy in August.

According to Ratch's EGM business development Anthony Yeates, "We are now producing at 60MW or about 33 pct of full capacity. Vestas has conducted a series of grid performance tests and the results are now being analysed by the Australian Energy Market Operator. We hope to be able to step up to 130MW or about 70 pct of capacity in early October."

When fully operational, Mount Emerald will be the largest wind farm in Queensland and will generate sufficient power for approximately 75,000 North Queensland homes. ONYX InSight Calls for Wind Turbine Data Access (Ind. Report)

According to UK-headquartered ONYX InSight -- a predictive analytics partner for asset owners and operators -- restrictions on access to operational turbine performance data are limiting the wind industry's ability to reduce its O&M costs. ONYX InSight also notes that restrictions on wind-turbine data may be unlawful under EU competition law and impede the growth of the wind industry.

O&M-related expenditure constitutes 58 pct of all operational expenditure costs, much of which is due to reactive, unplanned maintenance. While the industry is increasingly turning to predictive maintenance programs and condition monitoring systems (CMS) that allow for proactive, cost-efficient interventions, these approaches rely on a continuous stream of high-quality, readable data to operate effectively and contribute to lowering the overall levelized cost of energy (LCoE).

However, at present asset owners and operators face significant challenges in accessing this data, as there is no clear approach to data access across equipment suppliers. Only a minority of OEMs allow significant and open access to data. In the main, OEMs manage access for users, providing a highly-processed subset of this data, or allowing no free access at all.

The high-quality performance data for optimized O&M which owners need does not include turbine specifications, load calculations or other potentially sensitive design IP, so there should be no excuse for restrictions on data access. But, of the top eleven CMS hardware providers -- who between them account for over 80 pct of the market -- only one gives full access to CMS data, and seven do not permit any access to data whatsoever, according to ONYX InSight. UK Labour Commits to Net-Zero GHG Emissions by 2050 (Int'l Report)

In the UK, the Labour Party under the leadership of MP Jeremy Corbyn has committed to a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the middle of this century. Labour has also committed to generate 60 pct of the country's energy from renewable and low carbon sources by 2030. Other Labour recommendations include:
  • Making every house in the UK energy efficient to reduce heat demand from buildings by almost 25 pct;
  • Providing 85 pct of electricity demand from renewable and low carbon sources;
  • Providing 44 pct of heating demand from renewable sources;
  • A seven-fold increase in offshore wind and a doubling in onshore wind; and
  • Almost tripling solar power.

    Taken together, these measures are expected to provide enough wind and solar power to power 19.5 million homes.

  • Iberdrola Aims to Up U.S. Renewables Capacity 50 pct (Int'l)

    According to a Reuters report, Spanish wind power juggernaut Iberdrola SA plans to expand its renewable energy capacity in the U.S. by about 50 pct over four years as part of its global plan to cut carbon emissions. To that end, the company expects to invest about $15 billion in the U.S. on its transmission and distribution system and increase its renewable generation to around 10,000 MW by the end of 2022.

    Cleveland Climate Plan Sheds Fossil Fuel Past (Ind. Report)

    Once the sixth largest city in America, Cleveland -- "the Best Location in the Nation" -- reports it plans to join more than 80 U.S. cities in the Sierra Club's Ready for 100 Campaign and shift to 100 pct renewable energy sources for electricity and reduce greenhouses gases to 80 pct below the 2010 level by 2050.

    Cleveland's climate action plan calls for cutting emissions through improved energy efficiency and building design; developing more renewable energy within the city and region, including offshore wind power in Lake Erie; and increased public transportation electric vehicles and EV charging stations. to reduce fossil fuel use. Cleveland, which released its first climate plan in 2013, cut its emissions by only 2 pct from 2010 levels by 2016. Cleveland now joins a list of 82 U.S. cities that have made pledges to source 100 pct renewable energy, according to the Sierra Club's Ready for 100 campaign.

    AEP Ohio Announces Commitment to Renewable Energy

    AEP Ohio has announced a commitment to eventually double wind and solar generation in Ohio. Supporters say the plan sends a signal around the country to clean energy companies. AEP Ohio’s proposal is the next step in their plan to move away from coal power. Neil Waggoner is with the Sierra Club, which agreed to support the plan in 2015. Waggoner says AEP’s project and the state’s renewable energy standards are a signal to solar and wind developers. “If we just get out of our own way we’re gonna see more commitments like what AEP is trying to do and we’re gonna see Ohio clean energy just really take off," Waggoner said. Ohio lawmakers have tried repealing the standards mandating wind and solar power. A bill to change those standards could come up again after the November election.     Orsted Offloads Half of UK Hornsea 1 Offshore Wind Farm (M&A)

    Danish wind power company Orsted -- fka DONG Energy -- reports it will divest 50 pct of its stake in the 1,218 MW Hornsea 1 Offshore Wind Farm off the coast of Yorkshire, in the UK, to New York City-based investment fund Global Infrastructure Partners for approximately £4.46 billion ($5.85 billion. The purchase price will be paid out between 2018 and 2020.

    The sale follows Orsted's normal business practice to construct a project and sell a portion of the project to an investor at some point during construction or operation. Orsted will continue construction of the project under a EPC contract that includes long-term operations and maintenance services.     The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a joint collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, the World Wide Fund for Nature, and the We Mean Business coalition, intended to encourage and support companies to commit to making measurable reductions in their carbon emission levels at a scale that actively contributes to meeting the 2 degree C warming target set in the Paris Climate Accord.     UK Wind Power Exceeds 20GW (Int'l. Ind. Report)

    Hoover Dam Pumped Energy Storage Project Proposed (Ind. Report)

    In the Golden State, the Los Angeles Department of Wind and Power (LADWP) is floating a proposal that, if approved, would construct a wind and solar-powered pump station 20 miles south of the Hoover Dam. The station would pump water from downstream back up to Lake Mead, which was created by the dam. All the water stored at the lake could then be released as needed for power on demand, effectively turning the dam into a battery for solar and wind power.

    The Hoover Dam water load currently functions at about 20 pct of its full capacity. Research committees are presently evaluating the environmental and infrastructural impacts of the project. If approved, the LADWP hopes to complete the project by 2028.

    Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona.     Speaking at the recent SEAI/ International Energy Agency Bioenergy Symposium on Anaerobic Digestion in the Circular Economy at the University College Cork (UCC), Professor Jerry Murphy called for decarbonization of Ireland's gas system in order to achieve the "circular economy" objectives as laid out in the government's €21.8 billion National Development Plan.

    "Biogas plants cannot be directly compared to other renewable energy sources like wind turbines, which produce electricity, according to Prof. Murphy, Director of the SFI MaREI Centre headquartered at the University College Cork (UCC) Environmental Research Institute and Leader of the International Energy Agency Biogas Task. "There are so many more advantages to a biogas system -- from waste treatment, production of bio-fertilizer, generation of a renewable energy suitable for transport, heating or electricity, improved water quality and provision of jobs in rural communities. It is the full package."

    In 2018, Gas Networks Ireland will introduce biogas onto the Irish gas network for the first time and they have a target of at least 20 pct of all gas used in Ireland to be renewable (decarbonized) by 2030.     Google Data Center Inks Finnish Wind Energy PPA (Int'l Report)

    Reuters is reporting IT juggernaut Google has signed a 10-year PPA for renewable energy from three new wind farms presently under construction in Finland. The combined capacity of the three farms will be 190 MW and will be built by renewable energy developers Neoen of France and Germany's CPC and WPD.

    Google's Finnish data centre is situated in a former paper mill built originally in the 1950s and uses water from the Baltic Sea for cooling.     The project is a JV between Quinbrook and Elawan Wind, US, and was constructed by Florida-based firm Wanzek Construction. The project was financed with equity investments from Quinbrook and Elawan along with tax equity investments from a consortium comprising of GE Energy Financial Services and JP Morgan.     Siemens Scores UK Offshore Wind Grid Connection Contract (Int'l)

    Siemens Energy Management reports it will soon begin onshore substation and offshore transformer module design, supply and construction work on the UK's Triton Knoll offshore wind farm.     Siemens was awarded a contract from its German customer Innogy SE, to design, supply and build the grid connection for the 860 MW wind farm 32 km off the Lincolnshire coast.

    Siemens will lead on the construction of a new four-hectare onshore substation at Bicker Fen, as well as offshore infrastructure, including two Offshore Transformer Modules (OTM).     Vestas' Russian Wind Blade Plant Construction Nears Completion (Int'l)

    The 35, 4.5-MW Nordex wind turbine equipped Mortlake South wind farm represents capital expenditure of $288 million (AUS) (€177 million). Construction is slated to get underway early next year for completion in mid-2020.

    The Mortlake acquisition will increase ACCIONA'S Australian renewable energy capacity 36 pct to 592 MW. The wind farm will generate clean energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of almost 80,000 Australian households, avoiding over 532,000 tpy of CO2.

    Carlyle Group Acquiring 612-MW NY Wind Portfolio (M&A)

    Asset manager The Carlyle Group reports will purchase a 612-MW operating wind power generation portfolio in New York plus a dedicated operations platform in what it describes as its “maiden foray” into wind power. The purchase, which is subject to regulatory and other approvals, will be executed by its newly-established affiliate Zephyr Wind Energy, the announcement says. The vendor is Essex, Ct.-based Noble Environmental Power.

    The acquisition includes three wind farms in Clinton County totalling 279 MW, two in Wyoming County with a combined capacity of 227 MW and a single 106-MW wind park in Franklin County. Together, these plants currently produce 29 pct of the Empire State's wind power.     Orsted's Walney Extension UK Offshore Wind Farm Now Online (Int'l)

    Nearly $6 million was awarded to SUNY campuses to train more workers in the clean energy sector. In addition, a request for proposals (RFP) was made available to all SUNY campuses for grants totaling $9 million to provide apprenticeships, internships, and educational programs and support through industry partnerships.

    Of the awarded proposals, SUNY Canton will enhance its Solar Ready Vets program on-site at Fort Drum. Its training provides a micro-credential program in renewable energy specifically for veterans transitioning to civilian life. In another award, the SUNY Maritime Offshore Energy Center will develop a wind operations technician training program.     Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm Reaches Financial Close (Int'l)

    innogy SE acquired the Triton Knoll project from its parent company, Frankfort Germany-headquartered RWE and acquired a 50 pct stake from Norwegian renewable energy company Statkraft.     The O-Wind Turbine is a 25cm sphere with geometric vents mounted on a fixed axis. It can be used as a direct source of power or it can be fed into the electricity grid.     Statkraft Enables Wind Operations After Subsidies Expiration (Int'l)

    Oslo-headquartered Norwegian wind industry major Statkraft reports it and six community wind farms have agree on PPAs with German industrial companies for 31 wind turbines. This will allow these wind farms in Germany to continue operating in the long term after the end of EEG funding.

    EEG funding for around 6,000 German wind turbines will expire on 1 January 2021. This corresponds to a total installed capacity of approximately 4,500 mw -- sufficient power for around 2.1 million households.

    According to current data, around 14,000 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of around 17,000 mw will no longer receive EEG subsidies in the period 2021 to 2026. This corresponds to more than one third of the onshore wind power currently installed in Germany. and, since wind farms are no longer eligible for EEG subsidies after 20 years, wind farm operators must submit a stability assessment and find alternative sales channels for the electricity. In Lusaka, the Zambian Ministry of Energy and the GET FiT Zambia Secretariat have issued a Request for Proposal (RfS) for the deployment of 100 MW of solar PV capacity The RfP follows the Request for Qualification phase, which was concluded in June and saw the shortlisting of 10 developers including Enel Green Power, Engie, EDF, and others. Selected developers will be granted a 25-year PPA by the local utility ZESCO.

    The tender is being held under the framework of the Zambian REFiT Strategy, an initiative developed with the support of German development bank, KFW. The REFiT program aims to initially tender up to 100 MW of PV and envisages the deployment of 200 MW small- and medium-scale renewable energy projects, up to a maximum size of 20 MW. Eligible renewables include solar PV, hydro, geothermal, biomass, waste energy and wind power. The Department of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency at the African Development Bank has issued an expression of interest to arrange debt financing for the five 20 MW IPP solar projects.
