Iberdrola Inaugurates Wikinger Offshore Wind Farm (Int'l Report)

Following up on our Jan. 3rd coverage, Iberdrola is reporting the inauguration of the €1,400 million, 350 Wikinger offshore wind farm located in the German Baltic Sea. Other participants in the project included Asturian Windar, with the construction of 280 piles of 40 meters in length, as well as the Danish Bladt and the Spanish Navantia, which constructed 70 foundations (jackets) and Adwen, which has been in charge of the wind turbines.

Wikinger is Iberdrola's second offshore wind power project following the wind farm of the West of Duddon Sands (WoDs), jointly owned by the Danish Orsted and which was launched in the Irish Sea in 2014 with a capacity of 389 MW after an investment that exceeded €1,800 million. Vestas Supplying Turbines for FIve S. African Wind Farms (Int'l)

Italian energy giant Enel Green Power reports it has ordered 70 units of Vestas V136-4.2MW wind turbines for installation at five new South African wind farms -- Nxuba, Oyster Bay, Garob, Karusa, and Soetwater, with a capacity of around 140 MW each. The total investment comes in at approximately R19.7 billion, with Enel contributing around R3.7 billion in equity in a project that will generate roughly 700 MW of electricity when completed. Dominion Energy Issues Solar, Onshore Wind RFP (Ind. Report)

In the Old Dominion State, Richmond-based Dominion Energy reports it is seeking bids for up to 500 MW of solar and onshore wind generation as part of a plan to develop 3,000 MW of additional solar and wind power under the state's July 1, 2018, Grid Transformation & Security Act (GTSA).

The company has pledged to have 3,000 MW of new solar and wind energy -- sufficient power for 750,000 homes -- under development or in operation by early 2022 and, to that end, intends to issue an RfP each year until the pledge has been met.

The present RFP is soliciting bids for energy, capacity and environmental attributes including Renewable Energy Certificates, for new solar and onshore wind facilities of 5 megawatts (ac) or more located in Virginia. The proposals can be for PPAs and/or the purchase of development projects. The RFP outlines the proposal requirements and power and asset purchase agreement terms requiring a commercial operations date in 2020, as well as the price and non-price evaluation criteria. Notices of Intent to Bid and Confidentiality Agreements are due by November 2, 2018 with final asset purchase and power purchase proposals due December 13, 2018 and March 14, 2019 respectively. Ensus Wilton Wheat Biofuel Production "Paused" Again (Int'l)

In the UK, German CropEnergies reports production at its £300 million subsidiary Ensus bioethanol refinery in Wilton on Teesside is to be "paused" in November for the fourth time. The break in production is for an unspecified period due to the falling global price of bioethanol.

Previously, the plant was mothballed in 2011, two years after opening, due to US competition and dwindling demand. Production restarted in October 2012 but paused again in April 2013 because of rising energy costs and a poor harvest. CropEnergies AG acquired the facility in July 2013, rebooted production the following October, stopped production in early 2015 and restarted again in 2016.

EIB Funds Semi-Submersible Platform Offshore Wind Project (Int'l)

The European Investment Bank (EIB is reporting a € 60 million loan to Portuguese energy giant EDP Renovaveis subsidiary Windplus S.A. for the construction of a first-of-its-kind, semi-submersible platform offshore floating wind farm to be located about 20 km off the coast of Portugal.

The project will also be supported by the InnovFin Energy Demonstration Project facility, which is funded under the EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme , and an additional €29.9 million from the EU NER300 programme, plus up to €6 million from the Government of Portugal, through the Portuguese Carbon Fund.

Denmark, Ethiopia Expanding Wind Energy Cooperation (Int'l)

In Denmark, the Danish Energy Agency reports it will add 7 million DDK to its financial support for the 2017, Danish-Ethiopian Accelerating Wind Power Generation partnership programme in Ethiopia.

The Danish support specifically provides wind measurements and the expertise of the Danish Energy Agency concerning public procurement of wind-farms, and cost-efficient expansion of wind energy. The Ethiopian programme will be cooperatively administered by the Royal Danish Embassy in Addis Ababa, the Danish Energy Agency, Danish system operator, the World Bank and relevant Ethiopian counterparts. Norwegian Aventus Air Tech Aims to cut CO2 Emissions (Int"l)

In Oslo, Norway's budget air carrier Norwegian Air is touting new Aventus Air weather service technology to help cut airplane fuel consumption and thus lower air craft carbon emissions.

The Aventus Air weather service provides pilots with accurate wind and temperature information in accordance with their flight plan. The data is transferred to the aircraft's systems to help optimize the flight path for improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. The company estimates the system could reduce CO2 emissions across the company by as much as 16,000 tpy. $15Mn Aussie Partner's to Create Fuel from Renewables (Int'l)

In the Land Down Under, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency Australian (ARENA) reports it is partnering with the energy firm Jemena Ltd. on a $15 million trial project to create hydrogen gas from solar and wind power.

The partners plan to construct a 500-KW electrolyser in western Sydney as part of Project H2GO. The facility will be able to generate enough hydrogen to power about 250 homes. The resulting fuel would be stored for use across the Jemena Gas Network in New South Wales. PwC Joins RE100 Commits to 100 pct Renewable Energy (Ind. Report)

International accountancy and consulting giant PriceWatershouse Coopers (PwC) reports its commitment to cut carbon emissions, source 100 pct renewable energy for its electricity consumption, and to offset all business air travel has been reinforced with membership in the Climate Group and CDP lead RE100 initiative. The commitment applies to 21 of PwC's largest firms accounting for 88 pct of revenues in 2018.

In addition to joining RE100, PwC has also committed to offsetting unavoidable emissions linked to air travel by investing in a range of voluntary carbon offsets. PwC network firms will select from a portfolio of offsetting projects to reflect their local priorities. Scottish Power Going 100 pct Wind Power After Drax Sale (Int'l)

Glasgow-headquartered Scottish Power reports that with the £702 million sale of its last coal-fired and hydro power plants to DRAX, it will become the first major UK energy company to generate all its electricity from wind power. Scottish Power now plans to invest £5.2 billion over four years to more than double its renewables capacity.

Scottish Power scuttled all of its coal plants over the last 10 years and now has 2,700 MW of wind power capacity operating or under construction in the UK. It also has 3,000 MW of projects in the planning stage.

Drax runs the UK's largest power plant near Selby in North Yorkshire and is moving away from coal ahead of a government deadline for an emissions limit on coal plants from 2025. To date the company has converted four of its six generating units to burn wood pellets. The Selby plant is believed to be the first bioenergy carbon capture storage (Beccs) project of its type in Europe. Leosphere SAS designs, develops, manufactures, sells and services remote-sensing tools for the wind energy, aviation, meteorology and air quality sectors. It offers both ground-based and turbine-mounted wind LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems.

Zoo Chooses EDF Battery System to Cut Energy Costs (Ind. Report)

In the Golden State, San Diego-based EDF Renewables North America Distributed Solutions was chosen by San Diego Zoo Global to provide energy storage services to help cut energy costs. The EDF system will utilize a 1-MW/4-MWh battery to mitigate spikes in usage thereby lowering demand charges. The system will also minimize energy costs by recharging the battery when energy is at its lowest available rates, then discharge the battery power to the Zoo when costs are highest.

The San Diego Zoo will leverage EDF Renewables' performance-based contract whereby EDF is paid based on the actual utility bill savings realized by the Zoo as a result of the battery operation. Accordingly, the Zoo has no fixed payments and bears no performance risk on the operation of the system. The battery solution also acts as a hedge against rising utility rates. Springfield Biomass Plant Cleared for Groundbreaking (Ind. Report)

Amazon UK Fulfillment Centers Switching to Solar (Int'l)

Amazon reports it is set to install 20 MW of solar panels at its fulfillment centers across the U.K. The panels are expected to "generate the equivalent amount of electricity required to power over 4,500 U.K. homes." and cut the company's carbon footprint by 6,000 tpy of carbon dioxide.

The company plans to deploy large scale rooftop solar systems at 10 of its U.K. fulfillment centers over the next 18 months. This solar generated electricity will be backed by UK Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin certificates, which means that the energy bought for fulfillment centers and other buildings will have come from sources such as wind and solar. Oswego Named EPA Green Power Partner (Ind. Report)

In the Land of Lincoln, the community of Oswego (pop. 56,000 +-) reports it has been recognized by the the US EPA as a Green Power Partner community. The award is in recognition of the village's Electrical Aggregation Program and its commitment to 100 pct renewable energy.

For the program, the community contracted with clean energy provider MC Squared to purchase most of the energy and all the renewable energy credits for residents and businesses that participate in the Village's Electrical Aggregation program. For residents in the program, the amount they pay on their ComEd bills for their electricity supply supports new energy from a mix of wind and solar projects -- all at the same price as conventional coal -- and gas-powered electricity. Currently, 74 pct of all energy used in Oswego is from renewable resources.

To qualify as a Green Power Partner, communities must use energy from eligible renewable sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, or certain biomass or low-impact hydroelectric sources. In Qatar, German civil engineer Peter Neuschaefer is touting an award-winning sustainable solar and agricultural development concept that could help Qatar diversify its energy mix while addressing environmental protection, agro-technology, and food security concerns.

The SolarTerra Farm project is based on TerraSave, an idea is to reduce CO2 emissions to help save the environment based on the following concepts: wastewater treatment, wetland and landscape creation, biomass production, solar and wind energy, energy storage, solar desalination, and air-conditioning cooling by heat exchange. The TerraSave concept reportedly delivers a 70 pct to 80 pct savings in maintenance compared to other technical treatment plants.

The SolarTerra Farm concept, which is being studied for a 100MW to 500MW solar farm project, is basically a solar farm with crops planted beneath the PV panel which are mounted about 10-12 ft above the ground to allow crops to grow and farm machinery to operate beneath them. The concept also involves technology that recycles the water used to clean and cool PV panels. Since the crops are under the solar farm, they are irrigated regularly and are protected from direct sunlight, which reduces evaporation, according to the concept developer Neuschaefer. Latin America's Largest Wind Complex Announced (Int’l Report)

In a press release, Iberdrola has announced its Brazilian subsidiary Neoenergia, will construct a 565.5 MW -- Latin America's largest renewable energy project -- near the community of Santa Luzia in northeastern Brazil.

UK Wind Turbine Recycling Center Launched (Int'l Report)

In the UK, industrial equipment supplier Renewable Parts Ltd. reports the opening of a £250,000 wind turbine recycling and repair centre in the town of Lochgilphead, Scotland.

According to the company, wind farms at the end of their typically 25 years lifecycle are usually decommissioned and their equipment scrapped. Renewable Parts intends to salvage, repair and resell the "fully warranteed" parts at up to 40 pct below the cost of new parts.

The company will use its aftermarket spares warehouse in Renfrew near Glasgow to provide the turbine repair and recycle service, while engineering advice will be sourced from the University of Strathclyde and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Resalta Completes Slovenia's Largest Energy Efficiency Project (Int'l)

Slovenian energy service company Resalta -- fka GGE -- is reporting the completion of energy efficiency upgrades to 48 public buildings in the City of Ljubljana. The company also notes it has inked a second, €4.8 million energy retrofit agreement for an additional 11 city buildings.

According to a Resalta press release, the just completed €14.9 million project will deliver energy savings of 8,245 MWh annually and a reduction of 2,956 tpy of CO2 emissions.

The upgrades included HVAC system improvements, interior lighting conversions to energy efficient LEDs, with more energy-efficient equipment, the adoption of renewable energy sources, the replacement of windows and doors, the renovation of facades, roof insulation and others. of roofs. Construction Underway on Three Enel Green Spanish Wind Farms (Int'l)

Italian utility renewable energy specialist Enel Green Power reports construction is underway on three Spanish wind farm projects -- the 46.8MW Muniesa, 41.4MW Farlan, and 39.9MW San Pedro de Alacon sites -- all of which are expected to come online in 2019. The projects in Aragon's Teruel province are part of the overall 540MW awarded to Enel Green Power in the tender last May in which wind projects won 2,979MW of the available capacity.

Uttra Pradesh Approves Six Biofuel Projects (Int'l Report)

These projects include a mega biofuel plant by SunLight Fuels spanning 90 acres in Sitapur, and costing Rs 15.5 In India, the office of Uttra Pradesh Cheif Minister Yogi Adityanath reports it has approved the development of six private biofuel investment proposals totaling nearly Rs 17 billion ($226 million +-) in thr districts of Sitapur, Hapur, Meerut, Bareilly and Muzaffarnagar.

These projects include a mega ethanol plant to be developed by SunLight Fuels using sugarcane bagasse as a feedstock. The plant is expected to use about 500 tpd of bagasse to produce 1,75,000 litres of drop in fuel.

The five other projects entail investment of more than Rs 200 million each and are proposed to utilize farm waste, press mud (sugarcane byproduct) and other agro waste to produce biofuel, bio CNG and bio fertiliser. Each of these units is expected to produce roughly 5,000 kg of bio CNG a day.

Interestingly, the green energy sector investment proposals worth Rs 728 billion were almost 10 times compared to the conventional energy sector, which managed only 76 billion. Uttra Pradesh state reportedly has the potential of producing 28,000 MW of green energy, including solar, wind, small hydro power, and bioenergy (bio mass, bagasse cogeneration, waste to energy). Oman Announces Solar and Wind Projects (Int'l. Report)

In Muscat, the Sultanate of Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is reporting plans for a second, utility-scale solar power plant in line with the Sultanate's planned diversification of fuel resources for power generation.

The announced solar PV based Independent Power Project (IPP) will be due for commercial launch in 2022 alongside Oman's first commercial-scale solar -- Ibri II Solar project.

According to OPWP sever-year plan, the third solar IPP and two wind-based IPPs will commence competitive process and procurement process respectively towards the end of 2019. Commercial operation for both to be expected in 2023.

Synergy Offloads Aussie Wind Farms for $34Mn (Int'l, M&A)

Polk County Fla. Solar Coop Launched (Ind. Report)

In Bartow, Florida, local, state and national groups have officially launched the Polk County Solar Cooperative to enable participants to gain bulk discounts on the installation of residential solar-power systems.

The newly created co-op will offer a three-month window for applications and will need at least 30 customers to qualify for discount rates and likely set a cap of 225 customers.

Co-op members would likely pay about $10,000 -- including a buld discount -- for a solar system for a small house. Solar customers can also receive a 30 pct federal tax credit on qualified costs.
