Wichita County OKs Ameresco Energy Efficiency Project (Ind Report)

In Texas, Wichita County Utility reports it is in talks with Framingham, Mass.-headquartered renewables and energy efficiency specialist Ameresco on integrating more efficient utility and electrical systems in commercial, government and industrial buildings. The county presently spends about $560,000 for electricity, natural gas and water.

Upgrades such as energy-efficient lighting, thermostat controls, window tinting and faucet aerators could save the county more than $113,000 each year. An additional $116,000-$117,000 per year in outdated equipment operation and maintenance could also be saved by the upgrades. Upgrading would also qualify the county for a one-time $22,000 incentive from Oncor. Kenya Abandons Thermal Power for Wind Energy (Int'l. Report)

Due to In Nairobi, Kenyan Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter reports the government will scrap three thermal power plants totaling 190MW. The thermal power plant closures, which are expected to cost approximately $88 million, are due to the recently connected 310MW Lake Turkana Wind Farm project.

The closures include the Iberafrica Power Plant's 56MW contract, set to end in October next year, Tsavo Power's 74MW contract ending in September 2021, and Kipevu Diesel's 60MW contract which ends in July, 2023.

Kenya runs 23 diesel power plants that account for 25 pct (700MW) of the total installed capacity of 2,800MW. Eliminating the thermal plants is part of the government's plan to phase-out expensive diesel power generators as it moves to provide cheaper and cleaner renewable energy. Alcazar's 86.1MW Jordanian Wind Farm Now Online (Int'l Report)

Further to our March 3o coverage, Alcazar Energy, an independent renewable energy producer is reporting the completion and start of commercial operation of the Al Rajef wind farm in Jordan.

The plant includes a substation and 41 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with a total combined capacity of 86.1MW.

The $185 million project, which was financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Proparco and DEG, is in line with Jordan's renewable energy targets and could save more than 160,000 tonnes of CO2 and 380,000 cbm of water per year. Greenbacker Acquires Rights to 21.8 MW of NC Solar Capacity (M&A)

Kansas City, Missouri-based Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company LLC reports that through a wholly-owned subsidiary, it has purchased the rights to a 21.8 megawatt portfolio of three solar energy projects in Camden, Jamesville and Martin counties, North Carolina from SunEnergy1 LLC. Construction of the facilities has commenced, with closings to take place upon their reaching mechanical completion. All three facilities are expected to achieve commercial operations in early 2019.

The Company is currently working to arrange back leverage financing as well as tax equity financing. Once operational, the SE Solar Portfolio will sell all power generated to an investment grade utility off taker through a 15-year fixed price PPA.

With the addition of the SE Solar Portfolio assets, the Company will own approximately 278.7 MW of generating capacity (including assets in development and construction) comprising 61.5 MW of wind facilities and 217.2 MW of commercial and residential solar facilities. Wyoming Compensating Towns for Wind Farm Inconvenience (Funding)

The Casper Wyoming News Tribune is reporting the state of Wyoming will pay communities in southern Wyoming a little over $5 million to address the economic impact of two proposed wind energy projects. The state Industrial Siting Council has approved a 100-turbine wind project near Medicine Bow and a 47-turbine wind farm near Evanston. Impact impact funding for nearby towns facing an influx of workers and additional traffic has also been approved.

The 100-turbine Ekola Flats wind project proposed near Medicine Bow will be owned and operated by Rocky Mountain Power while Invenergy plans its 47-turbine Uinta Wind Energy Project near Evanston. The developers hope to have the wind farms built before federal tax credits are scheduled to end in 2020. E.ON to Construct 475-MW Swedish Onshore Wind Farm (Int'l)

German utility giant E.ON SE reports it will construct one Europe's largest onshore wind farms following the company's previously announced decision to invest in the 475-MW Nysater project to be built in Sweden.

For the project, E.ON will partner with Swiss investment manager Credit Suisse Energy Infrastructure Partners (CSEIP), which will hold an 60 pct stake in the project which is expected to commissioned by the end of 20121.

E.ON will construct and operate the wind farm under a long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) agreement while retaining a 20 pct ownership take in the project. Nordex will supply the €500 million ($570 million) project's 114 wind turbines ranging from 3.9 MW to 4.4 MW . In Toronoto, PCL Constructors Canada, Inc. (Toronto) is reporting the recently completed Milton (Ontario) District Hospital (MDH) expansion has been awarded Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC Gold certification for its 330,000 sq. ft. expansion.

Gold certification reflects the considerable energy efficiency and sustainable features that went into the design and construction of the expansion, including:

  • more than 86 pct of construction and demolition waste diverted from landfill;
  • high efficiency faucets, toilets, showers and urinals installed to reduce water consumption;
  • low-VOC materials including paints, adhesives, coatings, sealants and flooring;

  • France Adds 528 MW Wind-Solar Capacity in Q3 (Int'l Report)

    The Paris-headquartered French electric power grid operator RTE France -- Europe's largest grid -- is reporting France added 315 MW of wind and 213 MW of solar power capacity to its electricity grid in Q3 of 2018. The additions raised the grid's installed renewable energy capacity, including hydro power and bioenergy, to over 50 GW. In total, renewable energy accounted for 21 pct of the country's electric power consumption during the same period.

    New England Offshore Wind Cable Base Planned (Ind. Report)

    Subsea power provider JDR Cable Systems and UK-based McAllister Towing and Transportation Co., Inc. are reporting plans to develop a cable service base and offshore wind training center on an existing McAllister quayside waterfront property in the northeastern United States.     Costa Rica Reaches Wind Energy Generation Goal (Int'l Report)

    In Costa Rica, the National Electric System (SEN) is touting the Central American country's wind power success. With 16 wind farms totaling 386,62 MW of installed capacity on line, the country has to date accumulated 1,512.65 GWh, surpassing 2017's 1,287.68 GWh of production.

    January 2018 reported the highest wind farm generation during with 202 GWh, while October was the lowest month with 70.62 GWh. Costa Rica was the first Latin American country to incorporate wind in its matrix in 1996. The country expects to source 98 pct of its electric power from renewables by the end of the year.     Mitsubishi Claims 240MW Japanese Energy Storage Contract (Int'l)

    Japan's Mitsubishi Electric has won a contract from global engineering company Chiyoda Corporation for its BLEnDer RE energy storage system. The energy storage system, along with power conditioners (PCS), will be installed at Kita-Toyotomi substation in Hokkaido, Japan. The substation is owned by North Hokkaido Wind Energy Transmission company.

    The energy storage system will have a maximum output of nearly 240MW and 720MWh storage capacity, and is expected to come onl;ine in March , 2023.

    Chiyoda Corporation is responsible for the design, engineering, and construction for the grid reinforcement pilot project which is backed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy.     Enercon 1.1GW Swedish Wind Farm Work Underway (Int'l. Report)

    Liberty Ohio Schools Inks Energy Efficiency Contract (Ind. Report)

    In Salem, the Oregon Building Codes Structures Board is reporting the launch of its new Oregon Zero Code Efficiency Standard -- an optional code to help builders and developers achieve increased energy efficiency in commercial structures. The new standard has been approved and adopted by the Building Codes Division for use statewide.

    The code is based on nationally developed standards and establishes a predictable and efficient path for achievable energy-efficiency improvements. Adopting fully vetted, cost-effective, and federally recognized standards provides Oregon businesses with predictability and creates a more efficient regulatory framework.

    The adoption of the Oregon Zero Code Efficiency Standard creates a framework for ongoing improvement in energy efficiency, while providing predictability and regulatory efficiency to Oregon businesses. The standard includes a fully programmed online tool allowing builders to enter their construction choices for ventilation, windows, and other elements in order to confirm compliance with Oregon code.

    Inuvik Wind Project Wins $40Mn in Gov. Investments (Ind. Report)

    In Canada's frozen North, the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Canadian federal government are reporting an investing $40 million toward the Inuvik Wind Generation project. The territorial government is putting in $10 million, while the federal government adds $30 million through the Arctic Energy Fund.

    Construction Underway on Naturgy Spanish Wind Farms (Int'l Report)

    Madrid-based Naturgy Energy Group SA reports construction is underway on its Barasoain and Tirapu wind farms in Navarra. Totaling 49.5 MW of capacity, the two projects are expected to come in at approximately €45 million ($450 million). Construction on both projects is expected to be complete by July 2019.

    The Barasoain project will incorporate 11 wind turbines and the Tirapu plant will include four turbines.     AEP Commits $2.7Bn to New Renewable Generation (Ind. Report)

    LafargeHolcim Installing Wind Turbines at Ohio Plant (Ind. Report)

    Ukraine Completes EU4Energy Energy Efficiency Projects (Int'l)

    In Kiev, the Ukraine has is reported to have completed two sustainable energy -- energy efficiency projects under the European Union's EU4Energy program.

    The projects include a hospital in Voznesenk reconstruction and energy efficiency upgrade of windows and exterior thermal insulation that is expected to cut the facility's annual energy costs by 62 pct.

    The EU4Energy programme supports Eastern Partnership Region municipalities reduce their carbon emission by 20 per cent by 2020.     German Wind Energy Storage Facility Inaugurated (Int'l, Report)

    In Germany, the City of Hamburg reports the commissioning of a wind energy storage facility at the Curslack wind farm in Hamburg-Bergedorf.

    Built by Vattenfall in conjunction with the Competence Center for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CC4E) of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) and the Nordex Group, the lithium-ion battery storage facility links five wind turbines with a new battery storage facility connected directly to the wind farm grid.

    The storage power plant, which was built as part of the major NEW 4.0 -- Norddeutsche EnergieWende project for northern Germany, is intended to enable practical research into the possibilities for the system integration of renewable energies.

    The storage power plant is comprised of 24 batteries featuring the latest BMW technology. These are the same batteries that are also used in electric vehicles. The battery storage unit has an output of 720 kW and a storage capacity of 792 kWh.

    The NEW 4.0 project aims to fully convert the northern German states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein to green electricity by 2035.     180 MW Moroccan Wind Farm Construction Underway (Int'l Report)

    Italy's Enel Green Power and the Moroccan energy company Nareva are reporting construction is underway on the 180-MW, Midelt Wind Farm in Midelt, central Morocco. The project is the first part of the 850-MW Integrated Wind Project (PEI) which includes four other wind farms.

    The MAD 2.5 billion ($262 million +-) Midelt wind farm, which is expected to come online in 2 years, is being funded by equity imvestments from Morocco's National Electricity Office (ONEE), the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), and a consortium of both EGP and the Moroccan energy company Nareva.     DNV GL Releases Energy Transition Outlook Report (Int'l)

    In its recently published Energy Transition Outlook report DNV GL forecasts that by 2050, 12 pct of world primary energy supply will come from wind energy, of which 20 pct will come from offshore wind. In relative terms, offshore wind is growing 85-fold (2050 vs 2016), which is the same growth rate as for Solar PV which is also 85-fold.

    The report notes that as electric power consumption accelerates, bottom fixed and floating offshore wind farms will play an increasingly important role to ensure that the society can meet this demand.

    Australian Capital Territory Opens 91-MW Wind Farm (Int' Report)

    In the Land Down Under, transmission system operator TransGrid is reporting the startup of the 91-MW Crookwell 2 Wind Park which feeds power into the grid of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

    The wind farm near Goulburn in New South Wales incorporates 28 General Electric turbines to generate energy under a 20-year feed-in tariff (FiT) contract with the ACT government.

    EIA Oct. Short-Term Energy Outlook --Renewables, CO2 Emissions (Ind. Report)

    In 2017, the US Energy Information Administration EIA estimates that U.S. wind generation averaged 697,000 MWh per day (MWh/d). EIA forecasts that wind generation will rise by 8 pct to 750,000 MWh/d in 2018 and by a further 6 pct to 793,000 MWh/d in 2019.

    Solar power generates less electricity in the U.S. than wind power but continues to grow at a faster rate. EIA expects solar generation will rise 26 pct from 211,000 MWh/d in 2017 to 267,000 MWh/d in 2018 and jump 14 pct to 305,000 MWh/d in 2019.

    After falling by 0.8 pct in 2017, EIA forecasts that U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will rise by 2.2 pct in 2018 -- largely due to higher natural gas consumption because of a colder winter and a warmer summer than in 2017. Emissions are expected to to fall 1.1 pct in 2019, as forecast temperatures are forecast to return to normal.

    DNV GL's Windfloat Atlantic Due Diligence Completed (Ind. Report)

    Energy advisory and certification specialist DNV GL is reporting completion of a lenders' technical due diligence on the 25-MW Windfloat Atlantic floating wind farm project now under construction off the coast of Portugal.

    DNV GL's technical due diligence reportedly helped secure the €60 million from the European Investment Bank so the project could become the world's first project-financed floating wind farm.

    The project is being developed by Windplus and will incorporate three 8.4-MW MHI Vestas turbines, the largest and most powerful wind turbines ever installed on a floating foundation platform.

    Jordanian Wind Farm Finds $71Mn Financing (Int'l)

    The World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC) reports approval of a$71 million financing package for the construction of a new 51-MW wind power plant in Tafileh, southwest of Amman, Jordan.

    The $103 million project is being developed by KOSPO and Daelim Energy, both of Korea.

    IFC is providing a $10 million loan for its own account and also acted as lead arranger, mobilizing parallel loans of $26 million from Managed Co-Lending Portfolio Programme, $27.7 million from the Standard Chartered Bank and $8 million from Korea's Shinhan Bank.     Poland Commits to Develop 8 GW of Offshore Wind (Int'l)

    In Warsaw, Polish State Secretary for Energy reports Poland plans to legislate the development of 8 GW of offshore wind by 2035. The Secretary's announcement was made in conjunction with the opening of a 1 GW onshore wind energy auction on Monday.

    According to the Secretary, a survey of bidders participating in the auction suggests the prices will be between €43-63/MWh, with an average of €51/MWh -- lower than recent auctions in France and Germany. The auction is expected to be over-subscribed with more than 1 GW of wind farm projects bidding in.

    In the Tar Heel State, Gov. Roy Cooper (Dem) has signed an Executive Order affirming and formalizing North Carolina's commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 40 pct below 2005 levels by 2025. The order also calls for a reduction in energy consumption and increased energy efficiency. The Executive Order directs:
  • formation of the N.C. Climate Change Interagency Council, which will include a representative from every state cabinet agency;

  • the N. C. Dept. of Environmental Quality will develop an N.C. Clean Energy Plan to encourage the use of clean energy, including wind, solar, energy efficiency and energy storage;

  • the N.C. Dept. of Transportation will develop a plan to accelerate the use of zero-emission vehicles across state government. Cabinet agencies will prioritize the use of such vehicles for trips;

  • the N.C. DEQ will help cabinet agencies improve their energy efficiency and publicly report utility energy consumption;

  • the e N.C. Dept. of Commerce will support the expansion of clean energy businesses and service providers, clean technology investment and companies with a commitment to procuring renewable energy;

    In the Windy City, the Willis Tower -- fka Sears Tower -- owned and managed by EQ Office reports it has earned the US Green Building Council LEED Gold certification. The 110 story building is currently undergoing a $500 million plus renovation, the biggest restorative transformation in the building's 43-year history.

    The Willis Tower upgrades include:

  • Installation of high-efficiency lighting systems with improved controls to reduce energy consumption, including the building's newly renovated LED antenna lighting system;

  • Improvements to the building's HVAC exhaust and return fan dampers, which along with the new building automation management system, will enable the operating team to better control temperatures in the building and reduce energy usage;

  • Introduction of all new air media, fan gearboxes and fan blades, along with the installation of new variable frequency drives to all four of the building's cooling towers. The modernization will supply the chillers with lower temperature condensing water, resulting in an approximate 20 percent savings on the electric energy consumed by the cooling towers;

  • Installation of low flow high efficiency units on more than 450 sinks, 650 toilets and urinals, saving approximately 11 million gpy of water consumption and reducing the building's water usage by 30 pct;

    Vietnam's Largest Wind Farm Construction Completed (Int'l)

    In Vietnam, Singapore-headquartered developer Blue Circle Pte Ltd. is reporting completion of the 12-turbine, 40MW Dam Nai project in Ninh Thuan province. The wind farm incorporates Siemens Gamesa G114-2.625MW turbines and is the country's largest onshore wind farm.

    Commissioning is expected this month for commercial operations in December. Blue Circle notes that between 80MW and 120MW could eventually be added at the site.

    With this new facility, Vietnam has approximately 269MW of installed wind capacity, according to Windpower Intelligence.     In the UK, EDF Energy reports it is partnering with San Diego, California-base Nuvve to install up to 1,500 EV Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) battery chargers in the UK. The chargers will be offered to EDF Energy's business customers and will be used at its own sites to provide up to 15 megawatts of additional energy storage capacity -- sufficient energy to power 4,000 homes.

    V2G chargers allow a two-way flow of electricity between an EV and the charger, representing a potentially valuable opportunity to further enhance the electricity system benefits of EVs through provision of large volumes of cheap storage and flexibility.

    Nuvve has deployed V2G projects on five continents including the world's first fully commercial V2G hub in Denmark which has been operational for two years.     Arkansas-headquartered retail juggernaut Walmart is reporting an agreement to purchase 233 MW of utility-scale wind power from Houston-headquartered EDP Renewables North America. The PPA is in keeping with the retail giant's goal of sourcing 100 pct of its global energy needs from renewables.

    The Walmart-EDP agreement includes three EDP Renewables developed, owned and operated wind farms in the states of Illinois and Indiana. The deal didn't specify how the electricity will be distributed or whether the power will go directly toward local Walmart or other facilities. Walmart also recently announced an agreement with San Jose, California-based SunPower for the installation of both rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems at 19 Walmart stores and two distribution centers in Illinois, all of which are expected to begin construction early in the new year.
