GEVO, SAS Increasing SAF Purchase Supply Agreement (Ind. Report)

Englewood, Colorado-based biobutanol, ethanol and SAF producer GEVO, Inc. and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) are reporting an amendment to their previously signed, October 2019 sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sales agreement. With the amendment, SAS will increase its minimum purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to 5,000,000 gallons per year.

GEVO expects to begin supplying SAF from its Net-Zero Projects to SAS at the beginning of 2024. The Net-Zero Projects are being designed to produce liquid hydrocarbons in the form of SAF and renewable gasoline. Each Net-Zero Project is expected to produce approximately 45 million gpy of liquid hydrocarbons and at least 350,000,000 lbs/yr of high protein animal feed. Fulcrum NorthPoint SAF Plant Announced (Int'l. Report)

In the UK, Essar Oil reports its bulk liquid storage subsidiary Stanlow Terminals Limited is joining forces with Fulcrum BioEnergy to construct a 100 million LPY sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility to be known as Fulcrum NorthPoint within Essar's Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in the north-west of England.

The £600 million facility will use Fulcrum's waste-to-fuel process and Essar will assist with the blending and supply of the new SAF to airlines, with Stanlow Terminals providing product storage and logistics under a long-term agreement.

Subject to planning consent, the facility is expected to be operational in late 2025. British Airways Commits to LanzaJet SAF (Int'l. Report)

In the UK, international air carrier British Airways (BA) reports it will fuel future flights with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from sustainably-sourced ethanol, as part of a new partnership with LanzaTech's sustainable jet fuel company LanzaJet.

The airline will invest in LanzaJet's first commercial-scale Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Georgia and acquire cleaner burning sustainable aviation fuel from the plant before the end of 2022. BA will involve LanzaJet in early stage planning and design for a potential commercial facility for British Airways in the UK. BA Plans LanzaJet SAF Fueled Flights in 2022 (SAF Report)

British Airways (BA) is reporting it will use Chicago-based LanzaTech's spinoff LanzaJet supplied ethanol-derived sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to power some flights starting late in 2022. The air carrier will also invest in LanzaJet and conduct early-stage planning to establish a larger biofuel facility in the U.K. Financial details have not been disclosed.

British Airways London-headquartered parent, International Consolidated Airline Group (IAG SA) previously reported plans to invest $400 million in SAFs over the next two decades. As previously reported , British Airways and Velocys are is developing a UK SAF plant that is expected to begin production in 2025. Alcohol-to-Jet Fuel Production Plant Announced (Int'l. Report)

The FLITE (Fuel via Low Carbon Integrated Technology from Ethanol) consortium, led by SkyNRG and LanzaTech as the technology provider, reports it will construct the first-of-its-kind LanzaJet™ Alcohol to Jet (AtJ) facility to convert waste-based ethanol to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at a scale of over 30,000 tons/yr. The facility is expected to be fully operational in 20214. The project, which received €20 million in grant funding from the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, is a major milestone on the path to a net-zero emission for the aviation industry, according to the release.

The FLITE consortium includes: SkyNRG, a global market leader for SAF solutions, is acting as the project coordinator and managing downstream supply chain development; carbon recycling company, LanzaTech, will be responsible for plant design, construction and operations using the LanzaJet™ AtJ technology; Fraunhofer, Europe's largest applied research organization, will oversee and distribute communications about the project; energy and sustainability strategy consultancy E4tech, will conduct the life cycle assessment; and the world's most trusted, valued and peer-reviewed standard for the bio-based economy, the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), will support the project through guidance on RSB certification of the facility. Rolls-Royce Business Jets Going Green (Ind. Report)

Aircraft engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is reporting completion of tests on a business jet engine fueled with 100 pct sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which is claimed to dramatically reduce lifecycle fuel emissions compared to petroleum-derived jet fuel.

This latest test took place at Rolls-Royce's facility in Dahlewitz, Germany, near Berlin, and featured a Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 operating on a 100 pct SAF produced by low-carbon specialist World Energy in Paramount, California, sourced by Shell Aviation and delivered by SkyNRG.

According to Rolls-Royce, this un-blended fuel can reduce net CO2 lifecycle emissions by over 75 pct compared to conventional jet fuel. Boeing to Deliver 100 pct SAF-Biofuel Planes by 2030 (Ind. Report)

The world's largest aerospace company, Boeing, reports it will begin delivery of commercial airplanes capable of flying on 100 pct sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.

Boeing flew the world's first 100 pct SAF fuels commercial flight in 2018. Currently, biofuels are mixed directly with conventional jet fuel up to a 50/50 blend, which is the maximum allowed under current fuel specifications, according to the release.

The Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) reports commercial flying currently accounts for about 2 pct of all carbon dioxide emissions and about 12 pct of transport emissions, 80 pct of which are emitted from flights of over 930 miles . Greenergy Investing in Adv. Biofuels Project (Advanced Biofuel)

In the UK, London-based biodiesel producer Greenergy has announced an investment in advanced biofuels. Using a combination of existing technologies, the project will create low-carbon fuels from waste tyre feedstock.

The project, which is at the Front End Engineering Design stage, will used pyrolysis and hydrotreating technologies to convert 300 tpd of shredded waste tyres into renewable drop-in advanced biofuels that can be used in diesel and petrol and qualify as development fuels under the UK's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation. The plant will also have the capability to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) when fully operational in 2025.

The conceptual design was developed in Canada by Green Tire Technology Ltd then implemented in the UK in partnership with Greenergy. The project will use ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions' advanced thermal treatment technology and Haldor Topsoe's HydroFlex™ renewable fuels technology. The Fueling Flight Initiative was convened by the European Climate Foundation (ECF) and ClimateWorks Foundation (CWF) to provide recommendations on the sustainability aspects of the EU's policy design to support Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Technical advice was provided by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). A key element of the Fueling Flight Initiative is a regulatory framework that guarantees future-proof sustainability requirements. United Airlines Commits to Carbon Neutrality by 2050 (Ind. Report)

Further to our 14th Dec, 2020 coverage, US air carrier United Airlines notes it recognizes the role it plays as an airline in contributing to climate change, its responsibility in solving it and has accordingly set a goal of going 100 pct green by reducing 100 pct of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

To that end, United notes "true sustainability is about taking on the biggest culprit in our industry -- the emissions generated by our aircraft." Accordingly, the company notes it is looking beyond using carbon offsets which "simply don't go far enough to address the emissions caused by our operations."

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, United aims to tackle its emissions from their source by continuing and accelerating development and investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). United well also make a multimillion-dollar investment to help fund start-up company 1Point Five's planned Direct Air Capture plant to capture, remove and store 1 million metric tpy of CO2 -- equivalent to the work of 40 million trees. United Invests in SAF Fuels, CCS Project (Ind. Report)

United Airlines is reporting a multi-million-dollar investment in direct air carbon capture specialist 1PointFive -- a partnership between Oxy Low Carbon Ventures and Rusheen Capital Management -- to construct the first US industrial-sized direct air capture plant to permanently sequester one million tpy of CO2. United's participation is part of its previously reported plan to be 100 pct "green" by 2050. The carbon capture project is expected offset nearly 10 pct of the air carrier's annual emissions.

Quebec Supports Woody Biomass-to-Fuel Project (Ind. Report)

The Government of Quebec has announced $5.943 million ($4.55 million US) in funding to a non-profit organization Bioenergie La Tuque (BELT) to develop and demonstrate the potential of producing advanced biofuels from locally-sourced forestry waste, woody biomass in La Tuque, Quebec, Canada. The funding will be used to continue project development and plant design, and the potential of building a renewable fuels plant in the area.

BELT, the Council of the Atikamekw Nation and renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel provider Neste have been jointly assessing the feasibility of utilizing sustainably-sourced forest-based biomass and residues for advanced sustainable biofuels production since 2017.

The BioEnergie La Tuque project would utilize 650,000 metric tpy of forest biomass and aligns with and supports Quebec's established forest product industry and commitment to sustainable forestry management and biodiversity, according to the release. Des Plaines, Illinois-based Honeywell reports TOTAL will use Honeywell UOP Ecofining™ process technology to produce renewable fuels, primarily for the aviation industry, at its Grandpuits platform at Seine-et-Marne in France .

Honeywell UOP will provide technology licenses, basic engineering, specialty equipment, and catalysts for the biorefinery project that will process 400,000 tpy of feedstock to produce 70,000 tpy of sustainable aviation fuel, 120,000 tpy of renewable diesel and 50,000 tpy of renewable naphtha for production of bioplastics.

Neste Inks First Asian SAF Supply Agreement (Int'l. Report)

Espoo, Finland-headquartered renewable diesel specialist Neste Corp. is reporting a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply agreement with All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan's largest airline, that will see ANA become the first airline to use SAF on international flights from both Haneda International airport and Narita International Airports. It and also Neste's first SAF supply agrement with an Asian airline.

ANA and Neste plan to expand the collaboration to a multi-year agreement after 2023. CBI Calls for £500Mn Aviation Fuel Investment (Int'l. Report)

GEVO Lauds Sweden, Norway Targeted SAF Increase (Int'l. Report)

In a press release, Englewood, Colorado-based GEVO Inc. welcomed two announcements from the Scandinavian region regarding Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

As part of Sweden's target to be fossil-free by 2040, the Swedish Government on September 11 announced its intention to introduce a greenhouse gas reduction mandate for aviation fuel. The mandated reduction level is expected to be 0.8 pct in 2021 increasing to 27 pct by 2030, with most of the savings expected to come from the use of SAF.

As previously reported, Norway announced it would introduce a 0.5 pct biofuel blending mandate leading to a 30 pct share of biofuels in the aviation sector by 2030.

GEVO notes its SAF product is approved for use in commerce and has already been used to power numerous commercial flights. The company says it "looks forward to increasing its SAF production to help countries like Sweden and Norway in the battle to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions." Sweden Sustainable Aviation Fuel Front-runner, says Neste (Int'l.)

In Helsinki, in line with its "fossil-free fuel by 2045" initiative, the Swedish Government reports plans to introduce a greenhouse gas reduction mandate for aviation fuel sold in Sweden in 2021. The reduction level will be 0.8 pct in 2021, and gradually increase to 27 pct in 2030. This makes Sweden an undisputed leader in sustainable aviation, according to Neste Oyi.

"We need front-runners to lead the way in sustainable aviation. The ambitious target now set by the Swedish government is an example others should follow in order to support the aviation industry in meeting its emission reduction targets. It also creates the necessary certainty for sustainable aviation fuel producers to invest in increasing the production", says Neste VP for Renewable Aviation Europe, Jonathan Wood.

Earlier this year, Norway introduced a 0.5 pct biofuel blending mandate. There will be enough capacity on the market to supply the anticipated volumes of sustainable aviation fuel to Sweden and Norway. Neste is already producing commercial scale volumes of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™, refined from renewable waste and residue raw materials. In its neat form and over the lifecycle, the fuel can reduce up to 80 pct of greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil jet fuel, according to Neste.

Neste's sustainable aviation fuel capacity is currently 100,000 tpy. With Neste's Singapore refinery expansion on the way and possible additional investment in the Neste Rotterdam refinery, Neste will have the capacity to produce some 1.5 million tpy of sustainable aviation fuel by 2023.

The global aviation industry has set ambitious targets to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from air transport, including carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and beyond, and a 50 pct reduction of net aviation carbon emissions by 2050. Aviation needs multiple solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, sustainable aviation fuels offer the only viable alternative to fossil fuels for powering aircrafts, according to the Neste release. The Business Aviation Coalition for Sustainable Aviation Fuel has published a new guide on how to incorporate sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into operations from the perspective of the business aviation community. According to the coalition, the free online guide was designed to serve as a resource on topics such as the practicalities of SAF development, industry adoption and pending expansion of supply and use. Fueling the Future is an updated edition of a SAF guide published by the coalition in 2018.

In addition to the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), the SAF Coalition is made up of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI), European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) and National Air Transportation Association (NATA). The coalition is supported by a steering committee, whose participants include Air BP, Bombardier Business Aircraft, Dassault Falcon Jet, Embraer Executive Aircraft, Gulfstream Aerospace and Phillips 66.

Following up on our April, 2019 coverage, isobutanol producer GEVO Inc. and Pune, India-based Praj Industries Ltd are reporting a binding, definitive Master Framework Agreement (MFA) to collaborate on providing renewable, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable premium gasoline in India and neighboring countries.

Under their agreement, Gevo will license its technology to Praj which will provide technology, plant equipment and EPC services to sugar mills and ethanol plants to produce renewable isobutanol from sugar cane juice, cane molasses, sugar syrup as well as cellulosic biomass such as straws, bagasse, and others. Praj will also provide technology, plant equipment and EPC services to refineries for converting renewable isobutanol into SAF and premium gasoline through the ASTM-approved pathway of alcohol-to-jet fuel(ATJ). The agreement also allows Praj to carry out basic engineering and design package services, supply equipment, build plants and use jointly developed process design package to produce renewable isobutanol for plant operators who are licensed by Gevo. As previously reported, JetBlue committed to off-setting global warming by investing in sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) from Neste, better advancements in engineering and partnerships with CarbonFund.org Foundation, South Pole and EcoAct to help offset carbon dioxide emissions. To date, the airline has offset 2.6 billion pounds of carbon dioxide with CarbonFund.org and hopes to offset 15-17 billion pounds each year -- equivalent to removing 1.5 million cars from the road.

Suncor, Mitsui Investing in LanzaTech's LanzaJet Inc. (Ind. Report)

LanzaTech, a leading biotech company and carbon recycler, is reporting the launch of LanzaJet Inc., a new company that will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for a sector requiring climate friendly fuel options as it starts to recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

Calgary-based Suncor Energy Inc. and Japanese trading and investment company Mitsui & Co. Ltd. are investing $15 million and $10 million, respectively, to establish LanzaJet. The funding will be used to construct a demonstration plant that will produce 10 MMgy of SAF and renewable diesel starting from sustainable ethanol sources. Production is expected to start in early 2022.

This initial investment coupled with participation from All Nippon Airways will complement the existing $14 million grant from the U.S. DOE, enabling the construction of an integrated biorefinery at LanzaTech's Freedom Pines site in Soperton, Georgia, according to the LanzaTech release.

The LanzaJet process can use any source of sustainable ethanol for jet fuel production, including, but not limited to, ethanol made from recycled pollution, the core application of LanzaTech's carbon recycling platform.

Commercialization of this Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) process began with a partnership between LanzaTech and the DOE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for the development of a unique catalytic process to upgrade ethanol to alcohol-to-jet synthetic paraffinic kerosene (ATJ-SPK) which LanzaTech took from the laboratory to pilot scale. UK Coalition Seeks Sustainable Aviation Fuel Support (Int'l.) Report)

In the UK, the Sustainable Aviation coalition is calling for the Government to support emerging sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) sector by committing £500 million to early stage projects. When combined with action on aircraft and engine technology R&D, airspace modernization and carbon offset and removal, the UK could build a world leading green aviation sector, the coalition claims.

The coalition also called for Government to work with industry to: develop aircraft and engine technology R&D capabilities, ensuring the UK is among the first in the world to develop hybrid and electric aircraft; accelerate UK airspace modernization, to make use of new aircraft performance capability and reduce emissions and noise; and progress robust carbon offset measures and carbon removal technologies.

The Coalition's call to action follows previously reported news that Europe's first municipal waste-to-jet fuel facility -- Altalto Immingham -- was granted planning permission in North East Lincolnshire.

In Washington, U.S. Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer (Dem, IA-01)is reporting the introduction of the bipartisan Clean Fuels Deployment Act of 2020 authorizing $600 million over six years to help retailers offer higher ethanol blends, expand the geographic area selling ethanol blends, support biodiesel, bioheat, and sustainable aviation fuel markets, and accelerate the deployment of fueling infrastructure.

The legislation, co-sponsored by Reps. Angie Craig (D-MN), Don Bacon (R-NE), and Roger Marshall (R-KS), would provide funding for installing and converting fuel pump infrastructure to deliver higher blends of ethanol and biodiesel.

The bill, given recent uncertainties in the renewable fuels industry, is more important than ever to fund infrastructure improvements and remove market barriers to accessing clean and renewable fuels. In addition to supporting the distribution of higher ethanol and biodiesel blends at fueling stations, the program could also be used to enhance pipelines and terminals to blend and carry ethanol and biodiesel.

The commitment complements Neste's other strategic climate commitment of reducing customers' greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tpy by 2030. To that end, the company:

  • Continues to focus on energy efficiency to optimize the use of fuel gas, electricity, hydrogen and steam in its production. The improvements in the turnaround at Porvoo refinery in 2020 will decrease production emissions by more than 100 kt CO2eq annually;

    Stockholm-headquartered PREEM reports its selection of Lyngby, Denmark-based Haldor Topsoe A/S's HydroFlex renewable-fuel technology to produce clean renewable diesel and jet fuel at its Gothenburg refinery in Sweden. The 16,000 bpd unit, which is expected to come on line in 2024, will produce renewable fuels from tall oil, tallow, and other renewable feedstocks.

    Preem is the largest fuel company in Sweden, with a refining capacity of more than 18 million m3 of crude oil per year.

    Topsoe's HydroFlex is an industry-proven technology that produces renewable fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel, from all renewable feedstocks.     Following up on our 28th Feb. coverage, Englewood, Colorado-based biobutanol producer GEVO Inc. reports it has inked an agreement with Australian fuel supplier and refiner Viva Energy Australia, exclusive supplier of Shell fuels and lubricants in Australia, to collaborate on a project to convert regionally sourced biomass into sustainable jet fuel (SAF) and renewable gasoline (RNG).

    Under their agreement, the two companies will "develop and enhance commercial and advocacy relationships to further foster the use of renewable hydrocarbons, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Queensland and, more broadly, the country of Australia."     Heathrow Claims 93 pct Emissions Cut (Int'l. Report)

    In the UK, carbon neutral Heathrow Airport reports it has cut emissions 93 pct since 1990 after investing £100 million in energy efficiency measures and onsite power generation facilities. Heathrow noted it uses strictly "Clean" energy as needed, purchased carbon credits for 2019-21, and aims to achieve zero emissions from its operations within the next fifteen years.

    As we previously reported, Heathrow's four-part action plan to reduce and offset the growth in emissions builds on the momentum of technological change within the aviation industry to make travel more sustainable. The plan outlines action on four key areas including: cleaner aircraft performance and technology; improvements to airspace and ground operations; increased use of sustainable aviation fuels; and developing and promoting new carbon offsetting technologies and options. Additionally, Heathrow is calling on the ICAO -- the UN body for international aviation -- to develop global goals for the uptake of sustainable alternative fuels, and calling for the UK Government to engage ICAO and fellow member states to agree on a 2050 carbon emissions reduction goal for international aviation

    Other UK airports and airlines have committed to bring UK aviation to net-zero status by 2050 -- Gatwick Airport claimed carbon neutrality through renewable energy and offsets in 2018 and Birmingham Airport has committed to net-zero by 2033.     ASTM International is reporting approval of a new production pathway -- catalytic hydrothermolysis jet (CHJ) -- for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) developed by Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Applied Research Associates (ARA) and Bloomfield, New Jersey-based Chevron Lummus Global (CLG).

    Applied Research Associates, Inc is an employee-owned research and engineering company with estimated revenues as high as $750 million.

    Chevron Lummus Global LLC provides hydroprocessing technologies and engineering services including product development, equipment evaluation, plant modification, technical support, procedure development, disposal consultation, and catalyst regeneration.

    Lavazza Joins KLM's Corporate BioFuel Programme (Int'l. Report)

    Today (05 February 2020), Italian coffee giant Lavazza and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines are reporting Lavazza is first Italian partner in KLM's Corporate BioFuel Programme aimed at making the airline industry more sustainable through the increased use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAF has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 85 pct compared to fossil fuels.

    Delta, NWABF Ink Aviation Biofuel Agreement (Ind. Report)

    Scottsdale, Arizona-based Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels LLC (NWABF), a wholly owned subsidiary of Frederick, Maryland-based US Advanced Bio-Fuels, Inc. (USABIO), is reporting an off-take agreement with Delta Airlines under which the air carrier will purchase sustainable aviation fuel, if produced, from NWABF. The NWABF process uses the gasification of woody biomass to produce syngas for the Fischer-Tropsch process.

    NWABF's project would utilize forestry waste woody biomass to produce biofuel which would qualify under an approved carbon-reducing pathway recognized by ASTM. NWAF is currently carrying out a previously announced feasibility study to determine the potential for a production facility in Washington state. If constructed the Washington state plant would supply Delta's operations Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles by mid-2020.

    Following up on our December 11, 2019 coverage, Dallas-based independent petroleum refiner and marketer HollyFrontier Corporation is reporting the selection of Haldor Topsoe's HydroFlexTM technology to produce renewable diesel at its 125-million gpy Artesia, New Mexico refinery (Navajo Refinery). The company expects renewable diesel production to generate 600,000 LCFS credits in its first year.

    Under the agreement with Artesia Renewable Diesel Company LLC, a subsidiary of HollyFronteir, Topsoe will licence and supply basic engineering, proprietary equipment, catalysts, and technical services. The project is based on HydroFlex technology, which produces renewable fuels such as gasoline, diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, from all renewable feedstocks, according to the release.     French Working Group Promotes Aviation Biofuels (Int'l Report)

    In Toulouse, a French aviation industry working group comprised of Government agencies, Airbus, Air France, Safran, Suez and Total has issued a Call for Expression of Interest (CEI) as a first step towards identifying potential projects and investors in the emerging sustainable second generation sustainable aviation biofuel industry in France. To that end, the working group has recommended the industry and government:
  • Mobilize the necessary volume of raw -- biofuel feedstocks -- materials for the aviation sector;
  • Ensure that sustainable resources, especially sustainable resources sourced from the circular economy, are used to produce sustainable aviation fuel;
  • Ensure that the industry is economically viable for all actors in the value chain through appropriate incentive schemes;
  • Use existing airport logistics distribution networks;
  • Support and promote production diversification.

    The expansion of sustainable aviation fuel constitutes a strategic lever for reducing net CO2 emissions from air transport over a full lifecycle by up to 80 pct before blend, according to the release.   • Neste SAF Aviation Fuels Available in Zurich (Int'l. Report)

    Reporting from Switzerland, a coalition of groups representing business jet operators, manufacturers and fuel suppliers has announced private jet airplanes departing this week's World Economic Forum in Davos will be able to fuel their planes with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Zurich airport.

    Neste, the world's largest producer of renewable diesel and renewable jet fuel refined from waste and residues, will deliver the SAF to Zurich Airport. It will be the first time SAF will be available in Switzerland.

    This SAF jet fuel initiative comes with an offsetting plan. Business-jet operators using conventional fuel at airports in or around New York, Boston and Washington where the SAF variety isn't available can opt for an equivalent amount to be used on flights leaving from Van Nuys airport near Los Angeles, according to the statement.
