Illinois Passive Home Community Announced (Ind. Report)

Energy storage firm Sonnen and Evolutionary Home Builders are reporting their partnership for the development of the first-of-its-kind energy positive The Wildwood of Marengo community, west of Chicago, Illinois. The aim of the project is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable buildings.

The project, which will incorporate 28 homes with each possessing a 6KW solar array and a 20KWh energy automation system, is certified by the Passive House Institute United States in Chicago to maximize energy gains and minimize energy losses. Each residence will produce, store and intelligently manage the home's power throughout the day and night without sacrificing comfort. The homes are capable of becoming independent of the grid during high-cost periods of the day, avoiding the use of high carbon intensive peak power and minimizing stress on the utility grid.

Evolutionary Home Builders will initiate the development of the community which is claimed to be the most sustainable passive home community in the US. Shell Acquiring Home Solar Battery Manufacturer (Int'l, M&A)

Oil giant Shell Overseas Investment B.V. -- Shell New Energies reports it will acquire German battery maker Sonnen and roll it into a wholly owned subsidiary that will accelerate both company's integrated energy services and electric vehicle charging solutions. As previously reported Shell invested in Sonnen in 2018.

According to Sonnen, 40,000 of its SonnenBatterie systems have been installed world wide, 3,000 of which are in Australia. Sonnen was the first battery manufacturer to participate in South Australia's Home Battery Scheme and the company has set up battery assembly operations in Adelaide.

sonnen, Pearl Homes Partner on Net-Zero Community (Ind. Report)

In Los Angeles, residential energy storage specialist sonnen reports it has partnered with Sarasota, Florida-headquartered Pearl Homes to bring the vision of solar + storage, home automation and home construction to life, resulting in a "Net-Zero-Plus and Climate-Positive community."

The community, which will launch at Hunters Point in Cortez, FL., will include 148 LEED standard homes equipped with rooftop solar, a new and affordable sonnen energy storage system designed for mass market appeal, a smart thermostat and an EV charger -- all controlled by sonnen's energy automation and artificial intelligence (AI) software platform.

The Hunter's Point sonnen community represents the first time an energy storage system has worked in concert with Google Home in a master-planned development capable of maximizing the intelligent use of each household's renewable energy. In total, the Hunter's Point sonnenCommunity projects represent 9MWh of storage capacity and 7.2MW of power. Following on our September 10th coverage, German energy storage giant sonnen Group reports it expects to produce the first of a projected 10,000 Australian-made home energy storage sonnenBatterie within weeks, at the former Holden car factory in Elizabeth, South Australia. The plant's production is aimed primarily for the Australian market as well as export to the neighbouring Asia Pacific region.

Aussie Home Energy Storage Plant Plans Confirmed (Int'l. Report

German energy storage giant Sonnen reports it has selected a former auto plant in Adelaide for its planned Australian home energy storage battery production facility. The plant is expected to turn out Approximately 50,000 energy storage systems over the next five years, creating about 430 manufacturing and installation jobs for South Australia. The battery production project was first announced in February 2018, when the location was still under consideration. .

Sonnen Touts ecoLinx Energy Mgmt, Storage System (Ind. Report)

German energy storage specialist Sonnen is touting its new all-in-one ecoLinx smart energy management system that brings together home automation, residential solar, and energy storage in an energy ecosystem that enables intelligent load controllers to effectively manage energy usage, secure smart homes against grid outages and help stabilize the existing power grid, according to the company.

Energy automation with ecoLinx includes: smart, dynamic weather forecasting; smart, configurable backup power; and intelligent demand control and load shaping that automatically manages the use of clean, stored energy to avoid peak utility rates by integrating with smart devices within the home.

The Sonnen all-in-one ecoLinx features a 15-year system warranty, comes standard with lithium iron phosphate batteries, and is scalable from 10kWh to 20kWh of storage capacity. Battery Storage VC Funding Hits $539Mn in H1, says Mercom Report (Ind. Report)

Mercom Capital Group LLC consultancy's report on funding, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity for the battery storage, smart grid and energy efficiency sectors notes that venture capital (VC) funding for battery storage companies grew to $539 million in the first half of 2018, marking a 12 pct year-on-year rise. The data covers the second quarter and first half of 2018.

According to the report, corporate funding in battery storage came from 34 investors, with the top dealan $80-million Series D financing round of behind-the-meter battery startup Stem Inc. Germany's Sonnen GmbH, raised $71 million in a financing round led by Shell Ventures. Massachusetts-based materials technology company Ionic Materials raised $65 million and Durapower raises $40 million while thermal energy storage provider Ice Energy also raised $40 million.

The number of battery storage-related M&A transactions in the six months was eight, only one of which was with a disclosed value. This compares to two such deals in the first half of 2017, according to the Mercon report.
