The technology involves the dissolution of the bonding resin in weakly acidic solutions. In the manufacture of a blade, resin converts fiberglass and other polymers, as well as wood and metal parts of the blade structure into a monolithic product that can be used in the production of other commercial products.
In the process of disposal, the blade is immersed in a special solution and decomposes into primary materials, with the exception of the resin, which dissolves.
Using the new technology Siemens Gamesa manufactured the first 6 81-meter RecyclableBlade blades and signed three contracts for their use in wind turbine projects. The recyclable blades will be installed on the wind turbines of the Kaskasi power plant in Germany and on the offshore generators of the French EDF Renewables and German WPD projects.
An estimated 200,000 wind turbine blades will be buried in the ground or otherwise disposed of by 2050.

The OYSTER project aims to produce hydrogen from offshore wind at a cost that is competitive with natural gas (with a realistic carbon tax), thus unlocking bulk markets for green hydrogen making a meaningful impact on CO2 emissions, and facilitating the transition to a fully renewable energy system in Europe. The Rattlesnake Ridge Wind Power Project is being privately financed by BHE Canada through a combination of equity and debt and requires no government subsidies or tax incentives to support its operation.
The project is expected to provide approximately 150 jobs at peak construction during the approximately 18-month schedule. Construction activities are ongoing, with almost $12 million already invested in local Alberta contractors and suppliers. Total investment in the County of Forty Mile is expected to be approximately $56 million.
BHE Canada has signed a long-term PPA with a large Canadian corporate partner for approximately two-thirds of the energy output from the Rattlesnake Ridge Wind project. Statkraft Plans Berry Burn Wind Farm Expansion (Int'l. Report)
Norwegian state owned Statkraft AS reports it is seeking Scottish government approval to expand its 66.7-MW Berry Burn wind farm in Moray, Scotland to 104.5 MW with nine additional turbines totalling 37.8 MW.

The SGRE system heats volcanic rocks to 750C using a resistance heater and blower, which can be powered by wind turbines. The heat can then be used to generate steam. SGRE notes the pilot can store 130 MWh of energy for up to one week. SGRE claims the technology offers a second-life option to existing power plants as it uses standard components.
SGRE is partnering with local utility Hamburg Energie -- which will market the stored electricty -- and the Hamburg University of Technology on the pilot, which received funding from the German government.

The most recent award was the 232 MW Milligan project, located in Milligan County, Neb. For the project, Siemens will build 30 SG 4.5-145 and 36 SG 2.7-129 wind turbines. The 4.5-145 features a 71 meter or 233-foot long blade. With these recent orders, Siemens Gamesa eclipsed the 1-gigawatt mark for its SG 4.5-145 turbines sold worldwide. The other new projects are the 241 MW Coyote wind project in Texas, and 246 MW Oso Grande wind project in New Mexico. Coyote, located in Scurry County, Texas, will feature 48 SG 4.5-145 and 11 SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines. Project completion is targeted for the summer of 2020.
The Oso Grande wind project will also utilize 48 SG 4.5-145 and 13 SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines. Located about 43 miles southeast of Roswell, N.M., commissioning of this wind farm is slated for Q4, 2020.
The SG 4.5-145 offers a flexible power rating, from 4.2 to 4.8 MW, depending on site conditions, the company stated in a release. It is optimized for medium wind onshore locations to maximize energy production with low noise emission levels. Forty-eight Siemens Gamesa SG 4.5-145 turbines will be delivered to the Coyote wind project in Scurry County, Texas. The project is slated for commissioning and startup in mid-summer, 2020.
Siemens Gamesa will also supply 48 SG 4.5-145 and 13 SWT-2.3-108 turbines for the 246-MW Oso Grande wind project in New Mexico, which is scheduled for startup before the end of 2020.
