Big River Inks Ethanol Biorefineries CCS Deal (Ind. Report)

US carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) specialist Navigator CO2 Ventures LLC reports it will provide its carbon capture, transport, and usage/storage services via the Navigator Heartland Greenway system for three, Big River United Energy, LLC ethanol biorefineries beginning in Q1 2025.

West Burlington Iowa-based Big River produces 425 million gpy of fuel grade bioethanol from corn. Navigator will supply capture-to-end use CCUS services to capture 1 million mtpy of CO2 for 20 years.

Navigator's Heartland Greenway system will help customers finance and construct their carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture equipment; safely transport the captured CO₂ over a newly built 1,300-mile pipeline network; and permanently sequester 10-15 million metric tpy of CO2 into a safe underground sequestration site. Heartland Greenway is one of the first large-scale, commercially viable CCS projects to be developed in the United States, according to the company website. CIP Bioenergy Fund Raises €375Mn (Int'l.,Funding)

In Denmark, fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) reports its new CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund (CI ABF) first closing has reached €375 million.

Thefund, which is targeted for €1 billion, will focus on equity investments in advanced bioenergy infrastructure in Europe and North America. Investments will be "dark green" -- based on sustainable feedstock such as waste wood, agricultural wastes, and household and industrial biowaste. The offtake products will include green gas and green fuels, such as RNG, bio-LNG, and second-generation bioethanol.

The new fund will enable institutional investors to contribute to the energy transition and participate in the decarbonisation of hard to abate sectors through the production of advanced biofuels and biogas while delivering solutions for environmental and organic waste challenges, according to the release. USDA Investments to Support Renewable Fuels (Ind. Report, Funding)

On Tuesday, 12 April, the USDA announced the following support for renewable fuels;

  • $5.6 million for Infrastructure for Renewable Fuels through the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program -- Funding in 7 states -- California, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and South Dakota -- to construct infrastructure to expand the availability of higher-blend renewable fuels by approximately 59.5 million gpy.

    For example, in Illinois, Power Mart Express Corp., DBA PME, is receiving a $2.9 million grant to increase ethanol sales by 17.5 million gallons per year. This project will replace 293 dispensers and 30 storage tanks at 15 fueling stations in Chicago, Maywood, Cicero, Des Plaines, and Wilmington.

  • $700 Million for Biofuels Producers -- As part of the Pandemic Assistance for Producers initiative, USDA is providing up to $700 million in funding through a new Biofuel Producer Program to support agricultural producers that rely on biofuels producers as a market for their agricultural products. By making payments to producers of biofuels, the funding will help maintain a viable and significant market for such agricultural products. Producers can expect awards before the end of April.

  • $100 Million for Biofuels Infrastructure -- $100 million in new grant funding for biofuels infrastructure to make it easier for gas stations to sell and to significantly increase the use of higher blends of bioethanol and biodiesel at the pump -- refueling and distribution facilities for the cost of installation, retrofitting or otherwise upgrading of infrastructure required to ensure the environmentally safe availability of fuel containing ethanol blends of E15 and greater or fuel containing biodiesel blends of B-20 and greater. Funding will also support biofuels for railways.

  • A New Market in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) -- USDA is partnering with other agencies to advance the use of sustainable transportation and is investing in research and agricultural activities to improve aircraft fuel efficiency with: a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge to inspire the dramatic increase in the production of SAFs to at least 3 billion gpy by 2030; funding opportunities to support SAF projects and fuel producers totaling up to $4.3 billion; and increased R&D to achieve at least a 30 improvement in aircraft fuel efficiency.

    The USDA initiatives are aimed at assisting in the development, transportation, and distribution of low-carbon fuels, better market access for producers, and the availability of more affordable and cleaner fuels. (Source: USDA, PR, 12 April, 2022)

  • MicroBite Planning Bioethanol Plant in Telangana (Int'l.)

    Hyderabad, India-based startup MicroBite, part of The Phi Factory -- a science research-as-a-service company -- is touting a new microreactor technology that will shorten the time required in the fermentation process which would be highly beneficial for the ethanol industry. The company plans to build a 5 kpd bioethanol plant in Nalgonda, Zaheerabad, and Siddipet, all of which have ready access to molasses which will be used as a feedstock.

    MicroBite's microreactor will reduce the fermentation time making bioethanol production more efficient, faster and cheaper than normal bioethanol production which uses a batch process requiring the selected materials to be left undisturbed for 24 to 72 hours for the fermentation, according to the release.

    MicroBite has initially raised $1.5 million to fund the proposed bioethanol plant, which will incorporate the company's proprietary "counter-flow multistage extractive fermentation" technology. The company's first bioethanol plant is expected to be operational by August, this year. The company expects to manufacture 75 klpd bioethanol in two to three years, according to the release.     POET Lauds Michigan Proposal to Boost Higher Biofuel Blends Access (Opinions & Asides)

    Sioux Falls, S.D., ethanol industry pioneer POET, the world's largest biofuel producer, has welcomed the introduction of legislation to offer more Michigan motorists cleaner, more affordable options at the fuel pump. Introduced by Michigan state Senator Kevin Daley (R) Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, the bill would offer qualifying retailers a tax credit for every gallon higher bioethanol blends sold, including $0.05 per gallon of E15 and $0.085 per gallon of E85.

    POET Touts 2021 Growth, Climate Challenge Progress (Ind. Report)

    Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based ethanol pioneer and world's largest ethanol producer POET last year reported a 40 pct increase in biofuel production capacity and a company roadmap to net carbon neutrality. POET also acquired six bioprocessing facilities in Iowa and Nebraska as well as two terminals in Texas and Georgia that brought the company's production capacity to 3 billion gpy of bioethanol.

    The company also completed an on-site solar farm at POET headquarters and opened a second POET Pure 100 pct plant-based purified alcohol facility at POET Biorefining in Alexandria, Indian, aas well as broke ground the POET Bioproducts Institute at the Research Park at South Dakota State University. Environmental improvements at POET facilities, included installation of steam turbine technology at POET Biorefining in Mitchell, S.D. and renewable CO2 capture at POET Biorefining in Portland, Indiana. The company also partnered with Farmers Business Network to develop and use the Gradable platform at POET's 33 facilities, which tracks and records low-carbon-intensity practices by farmers so they can receive a premium for their crops in the future.

    World's First Bamboo Bioethanol Refinery Announced (Int'l. Report)

    In India, fluid engineering specialist Sulzer Technology and Oulu, Finland-based Chempolis are touting the new joint venture Assam Bio Refinery as India's and the world's first to create bioethanol from bamboo, which is readily available in India.

    The facility will use Sulzer's pump and separation technology to ensure long-term reliability and efficiency in the refining processes. When fully operational the biorefinery will use 300,000 tpy of bamboo to produce 60 million lpy of bioethanol transportation fuel, 19,000 tpy of furfural and 11,000 tpy of acetic acid, according to the release.     USDA Announces $800Mn Biofuel Ind. Relief Program (Ind. Report)

    In Washington, the USDA reports it will make up to $800 million available through the new Biofuel Producer Programme authorised by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) to support biofuel producers and infrastructure.

    Of the total, $700 million will provide economic relief to biofuel producers and restore renewable fuel markets affected by the pandemic. The remaining $100 million is earmarked to significantly increase the sales and use of higher blends of bioethanol and biodiesel by expanding the infrastructure for renewable fuels derived from agricultural products.     UK DfT Reports Detailed Renewable Fuels Data (Int'l. Report)

    According to the UK Department for Transport (DfT), renewable fuels made up 5 pct of the country's transport fuel mix, down from 5.9 pct over the same period 12 months ago. Of the total 1.44 billion litres of renewable fuels supplied between 1 January and 20 September, 63 pct was biodiesel, 25 pct was bioethanol and the balance was biomethane.

    The DfT data notes the most common fuel type was biodiesel made from used cooking oil (16.5 million litres), followed by bioethanol from sugar beet betaine residue (8.5 million litres). Of the renewable fuel supplied to date this year , the most widely reported source for biodiesel was used cooking oil from China (168 million litres) and corn from Ukraine for bioethanol (51 million litres).

    Taken together, renewable fuels achieved an average of 85 pct greenhouse gas (GHG) savings when compared with fossil fuel use, according to the DfT release.

    French Ethanol Sales Reach Record Highs (Int'l. Report)

    In Paris, the French bioethanol association SNPAA is reporting ethanol -- made primarily from sugar beets and grains -- sales in France will hit record highs' this year and next supported by strong demand for high-ethanol fuel E85 as car owners seek cheaper alternatives to gasoline and the EU's commitment to reduce emissions from road transport.

    According to SNPPA, sales are expected to climb to close to 12 million hectolitres this year, above the record of 2019, after dropping about 10 pct in 2020 . E10 sales hit a record-high market share was 51.6 pct of petrol sales in September 2021 while E85 grew to a record 3.9 pct of petrol sales, with a 15 pct growth in consumption compared to September 2020.     Steelanol Prepares for 2022 Bioethanol Production (Int'l.)

    Steelmaker ArcelorMittal Belgium reports construction of its €165 million Steelanol project at the company's Gent steel plant is well underway with the installation of four bioreactors. The bioreactors will use LanzaTech technology to convert industrial gases captured during the steelmaking process into sustainable ethanol.

    The Steelanol plant, the first of its kind in Europe, will produce roughly 80 million lpy of sustainable ethanol that can be used as transportation fuel or as a building block for producing chemicals. The technology was developed by LanzaTech, with whom ArcelorMittal has entered a long-term partnership, together with Primetals Technologies and E4tech.

    Biofuel Pioneer POET Pledges Carbon Neutrality by 2050 (Ind. Report)

    TotalEnergies Introducing Renewable Fuel at Le Mans (Int'l.)

    Paris-headquartered oil and gas conglomerate TotalEnergies reports it is developing a 100 pct renewable fuel for motorsport competition, to be introduced from next season at the FIA World Endurance Championship including the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2022, and at the European Le Mans Series.

    The new renewable fuel -- "Excellium Racing 100" -- will be produced on "bioethanol basis" from French industry wine residues and ETBE produced at TotalEnergies' Feyzin refinery near Lyon (France). This fuel should cut race car CO2 emissions by 65 pct or more, according to the release.

    "Excellium Racing 100" will have all the required qualities for a racing fuel and will meet automakers' requirements, as well as the latest FIA criteria for sustainable fuels, by leveraging the expertise of TotalEnergies Additives and Fuels Solutions, according to the release.     Eni, BASF Launch Bio-Propanol Biofuel Initiative (Ind. Report)

    Italian energy giant Eni SpA and German industrial conglomerate BASF SE are reporting a joint initiative to develop a new technology to produce bio-propanol as a drop-in transportation fuel that could reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 65 pct to 75 pct compared to fossil fuels.

    The joint initiative aims to develop bio-propanol from glycerin, a side product in the production of industrial biodiesel that Eni would buy from European producers, with a BASF catalyst. Bio-propanol produced in this way has better chemical properties than bioethanol and is therefore a valuable component for the preparation of premium gasoline, according to the release.     NextChem and MET Development have reached an agreement with FerSam Uruguay (a private holding company) to develop projects for the production of green ammonia and bioethanol in Latin America.

    Under the agreement, Maire Tecnimont Group's subsidiaries and FerSam will undertake feasibility studies for jointly producing green ammonia and developing a second-generation bioethanol project based on Sao Paulo, Brazil-based GranBio's 2G Ethanol technology to which NextChem acquired exclusive worldwide rights in 2020.

    Vivergo UK Biofuels Plant Slated for 2022 Reopening (Int'l. Report)

    UK-based Vivergo Fuels reports it plans to reboot its shuttered 2012 vintage wheat bioethanol plant in Hull, North Yorkshire, following a Department for Transport announcement that E10 petrol will be introduced at pumps across the UK beginning in September, this year. The plant is expected to resume bioethanol production in early 2022.

    The 420 million lpy bioethanol plant, the largest producer in the UK and second largest in Europe -- can process 1.1 million tpy of wheat and supplies 500,000 tpy of animal feed to 800 farms.     E15 Pump Labeling Vetoed in Indiana Ind. Report, (Reg. & Leg.)

    In Indianapolis, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) yesterday vetoed legislation that would have sabotaged sales of E15, a renewable motor fuel blended with 15 pct bioethanol.

    German Bioethanol Production on the Rise (Int'l. Report)

    In Berlin, the German Bioethanol Industry Association's (BDBe) recently published 2020 market data on certified sustainable bioethanol reported the overall fuel market and petro and bioethanol sales declined by almost 10 pct from 18.0 million tonnes to roughly 16.2 million tonnes due to the pandemic.

    The amount of ethanol and ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) used as an admixture in Super E10, Super Plus and Super E5 petrol fell by 4 pct to just under 1.10 million tonnes from 1.14 million tonnes the previous year. More than 125,000 tonnes of bioethanol were used for ETBE production -- equivalent to 42.8 pct more than the 88,000 tonnes used in 2019. By contrast, bioethanol as an admixture in petrol fell to 971,000 tonnes from 1.1 million tonnes in 2019.

    According to the release, in 2020 the use of bioethanol saved about 3 million tonnes of CO2 in transport

    The German Bioethanol Industry Association (BDBe) represents the interests of its member companies and associations, spanning agricultural production of raw materials to industrial production and processing of bioethanol and its co-products (DDGS, CDS, biogenic carbon dioxide, gluten, yeast, biomethane, organic fertiliser).     Under the agreement, UGI International has secured the exclusive rights to Ekobenz'supply of bioLPG, a renewable form of propane-butane produced from advanced bioethanol. The primary raw material to produce bioLPG is the conversion of organic material derived from industrial waste.

    Ekobenz is the first and currently only company in Europe that has succeeded in commercialising bioLPG production based on advanced bioethanol produced from waste.     Leipzig, Germany-based biodiesel producer Verbio reports it will open two straw biomethane plants, one in India and the other in the US, as well as expand biodiesel production in Canada, befoe the year end.

    According to the release, "Despite the decreasing market in the fuel segment as a result of the restricted mobility, Verbio achieved a record result. The company generated consolidated sales of €872 million. With a total production of 796,411 tons of biodiesel and bioethanol, Verbio once again increased the production record of the previous year. Biomethane production 'significantly' increased to 784 GWh, 11 pct above the previous year's result."

    Austria's dissolving pulp producer AustroCel Hallein GmbH reports the first successful trial delivery of advanced cellulosic ethanol marks the start of the long-term cooperation between Vienna-based integrated, international oil, gas and petrochemicals company OMV and AustroCel Hallein GmbH. The Hallein-based bioethanol plant has an annual capacity of up 9.2 million gpy, making it the world's largest bioethanol plant based on wood.

    LBNL Explores Cheaper Biofuels Production Costs (Ind. Report, R&D)

    As previously reported, researchers at the US DOE Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) have designed simulations to determine how much biofuel is needed for the whole bioproduct extraction process to decrease the demand for petroleum-based gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels and to be labeled as "cost-efficient." Their study results found the target levels to be modest and that Biofuels can compete with petroleum-based fuels in terms of cost production, according to a release.

    Conventional biofuel production often involves genetically engineered plants that can produce essential chemical compounds, or bioproducts. These bioproducts are extracted from the plant, and the remaining plant parts are converted into fuel. This led LBNL scientists to investigate exactly how much bioproduct does a plant need to determine if the whole extraction process to be determined efficient, and how much bioproduct should be produced to reach the target ethanol selling price of $2.50 per gallon.

    To do this, the researchers studied existing data of well-studied plant-based bioproduct production. They used this data to make simulations that will determine the factors involved in extracting bioproducts using the context of bioethanol refinery, which means that bioproducts will be extracted from the plant and the remaining plant materials will be converted to ethanol. Their results determined that the bioproduct levels needed to accumulate in plants to offset the production cost recovery is quite feasible. Using limonene as an example, they calculated that an accumulated 0.6 pct of biomass dry weight would already produce net economic benefits to biorefineries. To illustrate, it means harvesting 10 dry metric tons of sorghum mass from one acre will only need 130 pounds of recovered limonene from that biomass to say that the whole production process is efficient, according to the release.

    The LBNL researchers note this new finding can provide new insights into the role of bioproducts to improve biorefinery economics and offer the first quantitative basis for implementation of this cost-saving strategy for future studies on plant-based biofuel breeding and engineering. The scientists also recommended that crops need to be engineered to produce a broad range of bioproducts in order to provide options and diversify products in the market.     Austrocel Bioethanol Production Slated for Dec, Start-up (Int'l.)

    In Oberhausen, Germany, Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT researchers are touting a new marine fuel made by converting bioethanol into diesel, gasoline or jet fuel that have nearly the same properties as fossil fuels and reduces soot emissions and other greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30 pct compared to fossil fuel.

    Lead researcher Dr. Andreas Menne, a mechanical engineer who heads up the Biorefinery and Biofuels department and his colleagues are aiming to mitigate marine diesel's adverse impact on the climate with a new technology.

    The UMSICHT researchers are producing up to 20 liters of the new biofuel a week in an experimental plant. The feedstock is bioethanol sourced from wheat straw. Although the synthetic diesel is still more expensive than diesel made of petroleum, it is ready to go to market, according to the release.     IPPCA Supports Philippine Ethanol Blending Suspension (Int'l.)

    OSU Touts Biobutanol Transport Fuel R&D (New Prod & Tech, R&D)

    In Corvallis, an international research collaboration led by Oregon State University (OSU) has taken an important step toward the commercially viable manufacture of biobutanol transportation fuel. The researchers claims a key breakthrough is the development of a new metal organic framework (MOF) that can efficiently separate biobutanol from the broth of fermented biomass needed for the fuel's production. The researchers are now looking to partner with industry to try to scale up the separation method using the new MOF.

    Butanol, aka butyl alcohol, is more closely related to gasoline than ethanol and can be synthesized from petroleum or made from biomass. Bioethanol -- ethyl alcohol -- is a common biofuel additive but contains significantly less energy per gallon than gasoline and can also be harmful to engine components, according to the rlease.

    The process of creating biobutanol is known as ABE fermentation -- acetone-butanol-ethanol. It yields a watery broth that maxes out at about 2 pct butanol by weight. Hence the need for a separation tool that can work well in an aqueous environment and also in the presence of organic solvents, in this case acetone, which is a key ingredient in products like nail polish remover and paint thinner, the release notes. The novel MOF based on copper ions and carborane-carboxylate ligands (mCB-MOF-1) can pull butanol from the fermentation broth, via adsorption, with greater efficiency than distillation or other existing method, according to the release.

    The development of biofuels over the past years is part of the strategy to decrease the demand for petroleum-based gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels. However, biofuels are yet to reach the level where they can compete with petroleum-based fuels in terms of cost production. Conventional biofuel production often involves genetically engineered plants that can produce essential chemical compounds, or bioproducts. These bioproducts are extracted from the plant, and the remaining plant parts are converted into fuel. This led scientists from the Berkeley Laboratory to investigate exactly how much bioproduct does a plant need to determine if the whole extraction process to be determined efficient, and how much bioproduct should be produced to reach the target ethanol selling price of $2.50 per gallon.

    To do this, the researchers studied existing data of well-studied plant-based bioproduct production. They used this data to make simulations that will determine the factors involved in extracting bioproducts using the context of bioethanol refinery, which means that bioproducts will be extracted from the plant and the remaining plant materials will be converted to ethanol. Their results determined that the bioproduct levels needed to accumulate in plants to offset the production cost recovery is quite feasible. Using limonene as an example, they calculated that an accumulated 0.6 pct of biomass dry weight would already produce net economic benefits to biorefineries. To illustrate, it means harvesting 10 dry metric tons of sorghum mass from one acre will only need 130 pounds of recovered limonene from that biomass to say that the whole production process is efficient, according to the release.

    The BNL researchers note this new finding can provide new insights into the role of bioproducts to improve biorefinery economics and offer the first quantitative basis for implementation of this cost-saving strategy for future studies on plant-based biofuel breeding and engineering. The scientists also recommended that crops need to be engineered to produce a broad range of bioproducts in order to provide options and diversify products in the market.     Agave Biofuel Potential Studied in Australia (Int'l. Report, R&D)

    Researchers from the University of Sydney, University of Adelaide and the UK's University of Exeter have analyzed the potential to produce bioethanol from the agave plant -- a high-sugar succulent commonly grown in Mexico and used for tequila. Agave is now being grown as a biofuel source in the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland, Australia, by agribusiness company MSF Sugar.

    The study noted bioethanol yield of 7,414 litres a hectare each year is achievable with five-year-old agave plants. The study also found that sugarcane yields 9,900 litres per hectare each year. However, agave beats sugarcane on a number of measures, including fresh water eutrophication, marine ecotoxicity and water consumption. The project also found agave uses 69 pct less water than sugarcane and 46 pct less water than corn for the same yield. The economic analysis suggests that a first generation of bioethanol production from agave is currently not commercially viable without government support, given the recent collapse in the world oil price.

    Aube-France-headquartered sugar group Cristal Union reports it will stop producing ethanol biofuel at its Arcis sur Aube distillery and switch to alcohol as global demand for disinfectants to counter a fast-spreading coronavirus grows.

    The Arcis sur Aube facility in northeastern Franc , has a capacity of 250,000 cubic mpy. Cristal Union will continue to produce bioethanol fuel at Cristanol, another major distillery, but in smaller proportions, according to the release.
