Leipzig, Germany-based biodiesel producer Verbio reports it will open two straw biomethane plants, one in India and the other in the US, as well as expand biodiesel production in Canada, befoe the year end.

According to the release, "Despite the decreasing market in the fuel segment as a result of the restricted mobility, Verbio achieved a record result. The company generated consolidated sales of €872 million. With a total production of 796,411 tons of biodiesel and bioethanol, Verbio once again increased the production record of the previous year. Biomethane production 'significantly' increased to 784 GWh, 11 pct above the previous year's result."

VERBIO North American Corp. reports the launch of VERBIO Farm Services LLC and the Q3, 2021 opening of its new renewable fuel production facility in Nevada.

The new facility uses anaerobic digestion technology to convert cellulosic plant matterial, including corn stover, into renewable fuel. VERBIO notes the region is suited to provide up to 100,000 tpy of corn stover to produce 7 million gpy of ethanol once the first phase of the site development is complete.

VERBIO purchased the facility from Dow DuPont in late 2018, more than a year after it was abruptly shut down. Under Dow Dupont the plant never became fully operational. Zorbig/Leipzig based biodiesel producer Verbio reports that based on the current level of sales and raw material prices as well as the sales contracts already concluded, it expects to achieve an EBITDA of approximately €110 million in the financial year 2019/2020 and to increase net cash by the end of the financial year to approximately €40 million. In its most recent forecast the company had expected EBITDA of approximately €65 million and a low balance of net debt by the end of the financial year 2019/2020.

Further to out May 3rd coverage, Leipzig, Germany's Verbio Vereinigte BioEnergie Group subsidiary VERBIO Diesel Canada reports it has completed its previously announced purchase of Dain City, Ontario-based Atlantic Biodiesel.

The biodiesel plant has an annual capacity of approximately 150,000 tonnes of biodiesel and 18,000 tpy of raw glycerine. Operations are expected to resume in August 2019. With the purchase, VERBIO has increased its total biodiesel production capacity to approximately 620,000 tpy. Verbio Snares Atlantic Biodiesel Plant in Ontario (M&A) Verbio Diesel Canada Corp., a Canadian subsidiary of Germany-based Verbio Vereinigte BioEnergie AG reports it will purchase Atlantic Biodiesel Corp.'s 45 MMgy biodiesel production facility in Welland, Ontario, Canada. The sale is expected to close by mid-year.

Further to our Nov. 9th coverage, the Des Moines Register reports DuPont will repay $10.5 million in incentives it received in 2011 from the state of Iowa for its 30-million gpy, $400 million cellulosic ethanol plant in Nevada, Iowa.

The DuPont plant produced ethanol from corn cobs, stalks and other crop residue before being shuttered in 2017. As previously reported Michigan-based Verbio North America is purchasing the facility and plans to invest $35 million to convert the plant to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) from corn stover. Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Verbio North America Corp. and DowDuPont are reporting the sale of DowDuPont's 30 million gpy cellulosic ethanol plant in Nevada, Iowa, to Leipzig, Germany's Verbio Vereinigte BioEnergie AG's North American subsidiary, Verbio North America, for an undisclosed price.

The cellulosic ethanol plant, which opened in 2015, uses corn cobs and stover as a feedstock. Verbio plans to install equipment to produce natural gas from corn stover and other cellulosic crop residue. German biofuels producer Verbio is reporting record biodiesel production amounted to 476,211 mt, surpassing the previous record year's production of 473,382 mt, set in 2016/17. This came as production capacity utilization hit 101 pct.

Ethanol in comparison failed to post record levels, but still recorded strong results on the year, with 246,300 mt produced, down from 248,755 mt a year ago. In contrast, biomethane production was up 8.8 pct year on year to 608 GWh.

According to a company statement, in addition to making further investment in the expansion of sterol production, Verbio is expanding and optimizing existing biomethane plants -- with a focus on the straw biomethane technology which is key for entering new markets in Asia and the USA, the company said. The company's new biomethane plant in Pinnow, Germany, is currently close to completion and expected to come online befor the year end, the company said. In India, the government of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) reports it has entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with four companies to construct and operate CNG/bio-ethanol from paddy straw plants. Currently, 20 million tpy of paddy straw is produced in the state, with 75 - 80 pct be being burned as waste.

Under the MoUs, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Indian Oil Corporation, Verbio India Private Limited and Rika Biofuel Development Limited will produce Biogas/bio CNG/bio-ethanol from paddy straw. he said. When fully operational, each plant is expected to use about 500 tpd pf paddy straww to generate 100 kilo litre of bio-ethanol.
