VTT Coordinating Bioflex-Eranet Biomass-Fuel Project (Int'l Report)

The Research Institutes of Sweden's Finland Bioflex-Eranet Project and VTT Technical Research Center report they are investigating are the suitability of biomass and waste plastic-based fuel oils for marine engines.

The BioFlex project, which is being coordinated by VTT, has a budget of €1.6 million and is co-financed by Business Finland and VTT. Participating companys include Auramarine, Fortum, Neste, Pohjanmaan Hyotyjatekuljetus, Polartek, St1, Valmet and Wartsila. Biomass Residues to Fischer-Tropsch Products Validated (Ind Report)

The EU news agency CORDIS is reporting production of biofuel by gasification of biomass residues has been successfully validated in the EU's COMSYN project in September. The process performance was verified with bark in an 80 hour-long test run by the Helsinki-headquartered VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd (VTT) -- the project coordinator.

The syngas conversion to Fischer-Tropsch (FT) products was conducted by Karlsruhe, Germany-based IneraTec GmbH. The test studied and verified the performance of the gas cleaning train and the entire synthesis process with real wood-derived gasification gas. Melting Arctic Permafrost Impact Costs Pegged at $70tn (Int'l)

As previously reported, a study of the economic consequences of a melting Arctic from the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) in Espoo has found that the release of methane and CO2 from thawing permafrost will accelerate global warming and add up to $70 trillion to the worlds climate bill.

The study authors contend their study is the first to calculate the economic impact of permafrost melt and reduced albedo -- a measure of how much light that hits a surface is reflected without being absorbed -- based on the most advanced computer models of what is likely to happen in the Arctic as temperatures rise.

The study notes that on the current trajectory of at least 3 degree C of warming by the end of the century, melting permafrost is expected to discharge up to 280 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide and 3 gigatonnes of methane, which is 10 to 20 times more damaging to the the afmosphere than carbon dioxide. This would increase the global climate-driven impacts by $70 trillion between now and 2300, the report concludes. Finns Investigating Man-made Cellulose Fibre Production (R&D, Int'l)

The Helsinki, Finland-headquartered VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland reports receipt of €2.6 million funding from the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU)to improve wood-to-textile value chains to enable increased production of man-made cellulose fibres.

VTT's Green Chemicals and Technologies for the Wood-to-textile Value Chain (CRETE) project, a partnership between the EU and the Bio-based Industries Consortium, will tackle the bottlenecks of creating wood-to-textile value chains by developing innovative technologies for wood pulp modification, cellulose dissolution and fibre-quality generation. The issues to be solved in the project play a significant role in developing sustainable and green technologies for the European industry.

The project is led and coordinated by VTT, alongside partners University of Helsinki, Universitat fur Bodenkultur Wien, Universidade de Aveiro, Metsa Fibre Oyj, Celbi SA, Material Connexion Italia SRL and Vertech Group. UPM Touts BioVerno Diesel to Cut Emissions (Int'l. Report)

(UPM, Helsinki, 7 March 2019 at 10.00 EET) - In Finland, Helsinki headquartered renewable diesel producer UPM is reporting recent off-road vehicle tests at the VTT Technical Research Centre confirm that renewable UPM BioVerno diesel reduces tailpipe emissions. Both the nitrogen oxide and particle emissions were around 10 pct less when compared to a fossil reference fuel.

High quality sustainable biofuels are a cost-efficient alternative to help reduce traffic emissions and they can be adopted without any changes to vehicles. UPM Biofuels participates in Bio100, a four-year project co-ordinated by VTT with the goal of increasing the share of biofuels used in combustion engines in Helsinki area to at least 50 pct by 2017 and to 70-90 pct by the end of 2019, according to the UPM release. VTT Touts New Woody Biomass Gasification Technology (Int'l)

In Helsinki, the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd is touting its newly developed gasification technology for turning woody biomass and forest industry byproducts, such as bark, sawdust and forestry waste, into transport biofuels and chemicals. The new technique reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 90 pct compared to fossil fuels, according to VTT.

The new approach uses gasification to turn biomass into intermediate products -- liquid hydrocarbons, methanol or methane -- in production units integrated with communal district heating plants or forest industry power plants. The intermediate products are processed further in oil refineries to make renewable fuels or chemicals.

VTT developed and piloted the new gasification process and evaluated the competitiveness of plants based on the technique in the course of a recently concluded project called BTL2030. The distributed generation process developed by the project team makes efficient use of the energy content of biomass, according to VTT.
