20MW UK Green Hydrogen Project Funded (Int'l., Funding)
Uniper, Siemens Energy, Toyota Tsusho
Date: 2021-09-17
In the UK, Uniper, Siemens Energy AG, Toyota Tsusho and Associated British Ports (ABP) are reporting receipt of matched funding from the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, to study and help develop roughly 20MW of green hydrogen production for use at the Port of Immingham, either as a direct replacement for diesel and heavy fuel oil or for the production of clean shipping fuels.

The funded study will review the technical and economic feasibility of reducing port greenhouse gas emissions with hydrogen and develop a plan for future development, as well as assess key areas encompassing the conversion of existing infrastructure, the generation and storage of hydrogen and potential end uses of green hydrogen in and around the port.

The completed feasibility study could enable a front-end engineering design study (FEED) to start in 2022, with potential financial investment decisions in 2023 and possible first green hydrogen production by 2025. Uniper Energy, Neutral Fuels Partner on Maritime Biofuel (Int'l.)
Uniper Energy, Neutral Fuels, International Maritime Organization
Date: 2020-11-30
In the UAE, Uniper Energy DMCC (UED) and Dubai-based Neutral Fuels have announced a collaboration to provide maritime biofuel in Fujairah, UAE. UED supplies very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), and Neutral Fuels, winner of the ADIPEC 2020 Company of the Year Award in the Solutions to Climate Change category, pioneered the commercial viability of net zero biofuels to replace fossil fuels.

The two companies will blend UED's VLSFO and Neutral Fuels biofuel, creating a maritime fuel that meets the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard, thereby cutting emissions of carbon dioxide. Limiting sulfur in shipping fuels to 0.5 pct as mandated by the IMO reduces a significant source of atmospheric pollution.

Neutral Fuels biofuels are produced from used vegetable cooking oil, have no land-use issues, are not in competition with food production, and do not cause or support deforestation, according to the company website. Phillips 66, Vitol Ink Humber Zero CO2 MoU (Int'l. Report)
Phillips 66, Vitol
Date: 2020-05-27
Phillips 66, Uniper and Vitol-owned VPI Immingham have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to install post-combustion CO2 capture equipment on two of VPI Immingham's three gas-fired power generators and selected processing units at the Humber and Lindsay refineries, the companies said Tuesday.

In a first phase, Humber Zero would capture 8 million metric tonnes per annum of CO2 emissions, with the potential to target 30 million mt CO2 emissions from the wider Humber Cluster to the west of Immingham. The Humber Zero decarbonization project would then seek to develop of a hydrogen hub producing both green and blue hydrogen . Wood Group, Imperial College of London and the University of Sheffield are also involved in the project, which is part of Innovate UK's Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund competition to deliver 2050 Net Zero objectives.
