Honeywell is reporting the Honeywell UOP Ecofining process technology converts waste oils, fats, and greases into Honeywell Green Jet Fuel™, a drop-in replacement for jet fuel. When using a feedstock such as used cooking oils, lifecycle GHG emissions can be reduced by 80 pct at this stage compared to conventional petroleum jet fuel.

As the next step in enhancing the Ecofining process technology offering, Wood plc's technology will be integrated to use the byproducts of the UOP Ecofining process technology to produce renewable hydrogen, reducing lifecycle GHG emissions a further 10 pct when compared to the total GHG emissions produced by conventional petroleum jet fuel. The renewable hydrogen is then injected back into the Honeywell Ecofining process to remove feed impurities and create a cleaner burning renewable fuel.

The CO2 generated from the production of the hydrogen can be captured and routed for permanent underground sequestration using the Honeywell H2 Solutions technology suite, further reducing lifecycle GHG emissions an additional 10 pct when compared to the total GHG emissions produced by conventional petroleum jet fuel. The combination of technologies results in an aviation fuel that is effectively carbon neutral compared to petroleum fuels.

The UOP Ecofining process is used in most 100 pct biofeed units producing renewable diesel and all the licensed renewable jet fuel production in the world today. Honeywell UOP currently has licensed 22 Ecofining units in nine countries processing 12 different types of renewable feedstocks.

Honeywell UOP Tech. Slated for Paraguay Biofuel Plant (Ind. Report)

Honeywell reports Brazil-based ECB Group will use the UOP Ecofining™ process to convert vegetable oils and inedible animal fats into renewable diesel and jet fuel (SAF) at the new Omega Green production facility in Villeta, near Asuncion, Paraguay -- the country's first advanced Biofuels project. Honeywell will also provide technology and engineering services for the project which will produce up to 20,000 bpd of renewable diesel and SAF when fully operational .

Honeywell Touts Simplified Renewable Diesel Tech (Ind. Report)

Charlotte, N.C.-based Honeywell reports the introduction of a new UOP Ecofining technology for the production of renewable diesel fuel.

The single-stage Ecofining process produces Honeywell Green Diesel fuel which is chemically identical to petroleum-based diesel and can be used as a drop-in replacement in vehicles with no modifications. It also delivers an 80 pct lifecycle reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with petroleum diesel.

The new process uses a combination of catalysts to clean and remove oxygenates and other contaminants from the feedstock, and then "isomerize" the feed to improve its cold-flow properties.

TOTAL Using Honeywell UOP to Produce Renewable Jet Fuel (Int'l.)

Des Plaines, Illinois-based Honeywell reports TOTAL will use Honeywell UOP Ecofining™ process technology to produce renewable fuels, primarily for the aviation industry, at its Grandpuits platform at Seine-et-Marne in France .

Honeywell UOP will provide technology licenses, basic engineering, specialty equipment, and catalysts for the biorefinery project that will process 400,000 tpy of feedstock to produce 70,000 tpy of sustainable aviation fuel, 120,000 tpy of renewable diesel and 50,000 tpy of renewable naphtha for production of bioplastics.

Honeywell Green Jet Fuel™produced by this process is 50/50 blended with petroleum-based jet fuel at commercial scale and requires no changes to aircraft technology. Pertamina Opts for Honeywell Tech for Biofuel Production (Int'l.)

Honeywell has announced the Jakarta-based Indonesian state-owned oil and natural gas corporation Pertamina (Persero) will use Honeywell UOP's Renewable Jet Fuel Process™ technology at its Plaju refinery in Palembang, South Sumatra, and UOP Ecofining™ technology at its Cilacap refinery in Central Java.

UOP will provide technology licenses, basic engineering, specialty equipment, catalysts and training for the two Indonesian projects. The biorefinery in Plaju will process 20 000 bpd of vegetable oils and fats to produce renewable jet fuel, renewable diesel fuel and green liquefied petroleum gas. UOP also will revamp the existing refinery at Cilacap to process 6000 bpd of vegetable oils and fats to produce advanced biofuels.

Indonesia imports roughy 1.5 million bpd of refined products -- roughly 30 pct more than its domestic production capacity. According to the National Energy Policy in Indonesia, more than 5 pct of all energy must come from biofuel by 2025. Diamond Green Diesel Seeks Ren. Diesel Pathways Cert. (Ind. Report)

Diamond Green Diesel -- a JV formed between a subsidiary of Valero and Irving, Texas-based low-carbon feedstock supplier Darling Ingredients Inc. -- reports it has filed an application with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) seeking carbon intensity (CI) certification for the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) of renewable diesel (RD) pathways from distillers corn oil; rendered animal fat; and used cooking oil (UCO) at the Diamond Green Diesel LLC facility in Norco, Louisiana.

The Norco plant uses the UOP Ecofining Process to produce renewable diesel. The process hydrogenates triglycerides and free fatty acid feedstocks which are then isomerized to create a high-quality hydrocarbon fuel (RD). In addition to RD, the process produces a liquid petroleum gas vapor stream (LPG vapor); a liquid petroleum liquid stream (naphtha LPG); and a purge gas stream. All of the co-product streams go to the adjacent Valero oil refinery to be separated into fuel gas, propane, and naphtha through a distillation process. For the purposes of the CI certification, displacement credit was given to the fuel gas used as fuel gas for hydrogen production at the Valero refinery.
