In the Lone Star State, Houston-based industrial-scale renewable gasoline and green hydrogen projects developer Arbor Renewable Gas, LLC reports it will use Topsoe's TIGAS™ technology for producing renewable gasoline (RG) at a new facility in the Gulf Coast region. The facility is expected to be operational by 2024 to produce 1,000 bdp of RG with a significantly negative carbon intensity score under California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard.

Topsoe will supply the methanol synthesis technologies and the TIADS™ backend gasoline synthesis unit (TIGAS). The methanol synthesis loop is based on the modular MeOH-To-Go™ design. Arbor Gas aims to build out a fleet of cost-effective, safe, and reliable woody biomass to renewable gasoline and renewable hydrogen plants around the world. Phillips 66 Rodeo Renewable Diesel Prod. Underway (Ind. Report)

Houston-headquartered petroleum giant Phillips 66 reports its Haldor Topsoe HydroFlex technology equipped refinery in Rodeo, California, has begun renewable diesel production. Subject to permitting and approvals, full conversion of the refinery is expected to be complete in early 2024 when the facility's renewable fuel production capacity to 50,000 bpd.

Combined with its other renewable fuels facilities and projects, Phillips 66 has the potential to supply 1 billion gpy of renewable fuels, according to the release.

Phillips 66 also announced it is converting 600 branded retail sites in California to sell renewable diesel produced at the Rodeo biorefinery. Denmark-headquartered Haldor Topsoe reports Air Products has selected Topsoe's SynCOR™ autothermal reforming technology to capture CO2 emissions from the production of blue hydrogen from natural gas at Air Products' planned facility in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The new facility, which is expected to come online in 2024, will capture over 95 pct of the produced CO2, which will then be stored underground. Hydrogen-fueled electricity will power the plant and offset the remaining 5 pct of emissions at the site. The complex will also produce liquid hydrogen for merchant sales and use as a clean transportation fuel.

The Edmonton hydrogen complex is part of Air Products' aim to produce over 1,500 tpd of hydrogen and capture more than 3 million tpy of CO2 in Alberta alone. Canada's clean energy diversification strategy has tagged hydrogen as a key enabler for Canada to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, the release notes. Baltic Seas Sustainable Fuels Bunkering Hub Planned (Alt Fuel)

The newly formed Bornholm Bunker Hub consortium is reporting the launch of a feasibility study to determine the financial potential for supplying sustainable fuels produced from wind energy on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

The project, involving major energy group Orsted and Danish marine fuels firm Bunker Holdings Ltd. will investigate how local power-to-X green energy can support the supply of sustainable fuels for the more than 60,000 ships per year that pass the island. Consortium partners include Danish ferry operator Molslinjen, Finnish engine maker Wartsila, French classification society Bureau Veritas, Bornholm's Port of Roenne, Danish engineering group Ramboll and hydrogen catalysis firm Haldor Topsoe.

Bornholm Island's central location in the Baltic region gives it added potential to exploit green electricity from offshore wind from Sweden, Poland and Germany as well as Danish waters. Preem Completes Gothenburg Biorefinery Revamp (Int'l. Report)

Stockholm-headquartered Preem, Sweden's largest oil refiner, reports the revamping of it Gothenburg refinery has been completed. This is the second revamp of the hydrotreater, following work in 2010 that upgraded the unit to co-process 30 pct renewable feedstock using Topsoe's HydroFlex technology.

With the second revamp, Preem and Topsoe achieved 85 pct co-processing of tallow and tall diesel feedstock enabling the production of roughly 5 million cubic meters of renewable fuels by 2030.

Topsoe Plans Green Hydrogen Production Facility (Int'l. Report)

In Denmark, Haldor Topsoe is reporting plans to invest in a 500 MW per -- expandable to 5 GW per year -- solid oxide electrolyzers (SOEC) production facility. Construction of the new automated manufacturing facility is expected to get underway in 2022 for commissioning and startup in 2023.

With 90 pct or better efficiencies, Topsoe's proprietary SOEC electrolyzers offer superior performance in electrolysis of water into hydrogen, when compared to today's standard alkaline or PEM electrolyzers, according to the release. "This new manufacturing facility is a concrete step to take a leading role in the ongoing energy transition towards a low carbon future. We strongly believe that one of the most viable routes to this goal lies in the efficient utilization of renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen, fuels, and chemicals. Greenergy Investing in Adv. Biofuels Project (Advanced Biofuel)

In the UK, London-based biodiesel producer Greenergy has announced an investment in advanced biofuels. Using a combination of existing technologies, the project will create low-carbon fuels from waste tyre feedstock.

The project, which is at the Front End Engineering Design stage, will used pyrolysis and hydrotreating technologies to convert 300 tpd of shredded waste tyres into renewable drop-in advanced biofuels that can be used in diesel and petrol and qualify as development fuels under the UK's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation. The plant will also have the capability to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) when fully operational in 2025.

The conceptual design was developed in Canada by Green Tire Technology Ltd then implemented in the UK in partnership with Greenergy. Haldor Topsoe Joins Danish Sustainable Fuel Project (Int'l. Report)

Denmark-headquartered Haldor Topsoe reports it is partnering with Orsted, Copenhagen Airports, A.P. Moller- Maersk, DSV Panalpina, DFDS, SAS, Nel, and Everfuel to develop a electrolysis-based hydrogen and sustainable fuels -- jet fuel, ammonia, and methanol -- production facility in the Greater Copenhagen .

The three-phase project is expected to be finalized by 2030. The first stage, which could be operational by as early as 2023, will comprise a 10 MW electrolysis plant producing renewable hydrogen for trucks and potentially buses. By 2027, the stage two facility equipped with a 250 MW electrolysis plant will combine the production of renewable hydrogen with captured CO2 from combustion of municipal waste or biomass to produce renewable methanol for maritime vessels and renewable jet fuel for planes. The last phase will upgrade the electrolysis plant's capacity to 1.3 GW and capture more CO2.

DTU Increases Biomass Biofuel Production (New Prod. & Tech)

In a recent Technical University of Denmark (DTU) synfuel research project, researchers succeeded in combining two known technologies -- thermal gasification of biomass and electrolysis that is utilized for the production of biofuel -- can produce more biofuel from the same amount of biomass, according to a DTU release.

An electrolysis cell (solid oxide electrolysis cell, SOEC) developed jointly by DTU and Haldor Topsoe is used for electrolysis. In an SOEC, electricity from e.g. wind turbines is used to split water into its two constituents -- oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen can be utilized in a thermal gasification process, where a biomass such as straw is broken down at high temperature. This creates synthesis gas -- a mixture of mainly hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. The gas mixture can be used in the production of methanol when the hydrogen produced by the electrolysis is added. Methanol can be used directly as fuel or catalytically upgraded to more familiar fuels used in ships and aircraft.

"In Synfuel, we have improved the two in technologies in several areas, and we've demonstrated that we can achieve higher utilization rates by combining the two technologies than when they run separately. We derive far more biofuel from the biomass resources and at the same time we can use surplus power from e.g. wind turbines to make fuel for heavy transport," says Professor Peter Vang Hendriksen, Synfuel project manager and Head of Section at DTU Energy.

Consortium Reports Scandinavian eMethanol Projects (Int'l. Report)

The stakeholders will combine their expertise and technology to capture waste carbon dioxide (CCU) and combine this with hydrogen, made from renewable electricity and water, to produce renewable methanol (eMethanol.

Six individual 45,000 tpy facilities are planned across Scandinavia by 2030 with the first project in Sweden expected to be in production by 2023. The consortium aims to standardize the eMethanol facility and blueprint a 'digital twin for efficient replication than can be scaled and licensed internationally. Stockholm-headquartered PREEM reports its selection of Lyngby, Denmark-based Haldor Topsoe A/S's HydroFlex renewable-fuel technology to produce clean renewable diesel and jet fuel at its Gothenburg refinery in Sweden. The 16,000 bpd unit, which is expected to come on line in 2024, will produce renewable fuels from tall oil, tallow, and other renewable feedstocks.

Preem is the largest fuel company in Sweden, with a refining capacity of more than 18 million m3 of crude oil per year.

Following up on our December 11, 2019 coverage, Dallas-based independent petroleum refiner and marketer HollyFrontier Corporation is reporting the selection of Haldor Topsoe's HydroFlexTM technology to produce renewable diesel at its 125-million gpy Artesia, New Mexico refinery (Navajo Refinery). The company expects renewable diesel production to generate 600,000 LCFS credits in its first year.

Under the agreement with Artesia Renewable Diesel Company LLC, a subsidiary of HollyFronteir, Topsoe will licence and supply basic engineering, proprietary equipment, catalysts, and technical services. The project is based on HydroFlex technology, which produces renewable fuels such as gasoline, diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, from all renewable feedstocks, according to the release. GTI Low-Carbon Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from Wood Wastes Study Released (Report Attached)

The Des Plaines, Illinois-headquartered Gas Technology Institute (GTI) has released a site-specific engineering design titled Low-Carbon Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from Wood Wastes, a blueprint for converting an existing biomass facility into an RNG production site, using the wood waste feedstock.

New RNG production facilities using the commercial technologies outlined in the analysis could reduce criteria pollutants by approximately 99 pct compared to existing operational biomass power plants and produce a very low carbon fuel in the base case and below zero in the case including carbon sequestration technologies, according to the study.
