Mitsui, Bombora Partner on Wind-Wave Energy Projects (Int'l.)

In Japan, maritime merchant fleet operator Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Welsh marine energy developer Bombora are reporting an agreement to identify potential opportunities and applications for Bombora's mWave and wind energy projects in Japan the neighbouring area.

Bombora is currently in the final assembly phase of its 1.5MW mWave Pembrokeshire Demonstration Project in Wales with installation scheduled for mid-2021. Looking beyond the test and validation this year, Bombora is forging ahead with technological and commercial advancements. InSPIRE, Bombora's partnership project with global EPC contractor, TechnipFMC, to integrate mWave and wind generation on one floating offshore platform has already commenced. The first phase of the InSPIRE project will realise the demonstration of a 12MW Integrated mWave and wind floating platform. Phase two makes the leap to an industry leading 18MW. Significant gains are made from integrating mWave and wind onto a single platform. It is possible to generate 50 pct more power from seabed lease areas and 50 pct more consistent power than just offshore wind. Most important of all is the ability to accelerate the cost reduction pathway for this emerging sector, delivering a 20 pct lower cost of energy than floating offshore wind alone.

Bombora, TechnipFMC Partner on Floating Foundations (Ind. Report)

UK-based wave energy converter developer Bombora Wave Energy and Netherlands-headquartered energy services provider TechnipFMC report they are partnering to work on an Integrated Semi-Submersible Platform with Innovative Renewable Energy (InSPIRE) floating offshore wind platform pairing ocean wave energy with offshore wind. The two companies will develop a floating offshore wind foundation incorporating Bombora's mWave technology that combines wave energy and wind power on a shared platform.

For the project, a Phase 1 Demonstrator will develop a 12MW platform -- combined mWave (4MW) and wind turbine (8MW) on a shared floating platform. The commercial Phase 2 envisions 18MW combined mWave (6MW) and wind turbine (12MW) on a shared floating platform. UK Port of Tyne Touts Renewable Energy Hub (Int'l. Report)

In the UK, the Port of Tyne is touting the launch of the Tyne Clean Energy Park as versatile strategic base for the region's rapidly growing renewable energy sector supporting the Government's goal to power every UK home with offshore wind electricity.

As previously reported, the Port was selected as Equinor's flagship operations and maintenance base for what will become the world's largest offshore wind farm at Dogger Bank.

The River Tyne presently hostso an existing offshore cluster, including South Tyneside Marine College, A&P, Smulders Projects, Shepherd Offshore and TechnipFMC, all of which contributeto a well-established offshore energy supply chain. The Port of Tyne is one of only two deep sea ports in the North-East UK. Vertimass Aviation Biofuel R&D Funded (R&D, Funding Report)

Irvine, California-based Vertimass LLC is reporting receipt of a cost-shared award of up to $1.4 million from the US DOE EERE Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) to optimize and commercialize jet biofuel production compatible with the current jet fuel infrastructure.

Existing US ethanol production plants currently have the capacity to produce approximately 16 billion gpy, a level that saturates current use as 10 pct blends with gasoline. However, the new Vertimass catalyst breaks that barrier by producing a hydrocarbon that can be blended at much higher levels. In addition, while ethanol has been traditionally considered too low in energy density for use as a jet fuel, the Vertimass catalyst can overcome that issue.

Initial tests indicate the Vertimass fuels (Vertifuels) are compatible for blending with gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels with no engine modifications, but further tests are underway for ASTM certification.

Vertimass is working with the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), TechnipFMC, and the University of California, Riverside (UCR). Technip FMC, BTG-BTL Tout Swedish Bio-oil Project (Int'l Report)

Following up on our 27 Sept. coverage, Enschede, The Netherlands-based BTG-BTL reports it is partnering with TechnipFMC to design and construct a production facility in Sweden to convert 3,000 -- 40,000 tpy of dry wood residues such as sawdust into bio-oil for advanced biofuel production. The two Netherlands firms have received an order to construct a similar facility in Finland, with the choice to increase to four.

BTG Bioliquids is focused on the delivery and deployment of a patented fast pyrolysis technology. The company doesn't produce pyrolysis oil but instead focus on delivering to our clients the core components of a pyrolysis installation, according to the company website. TechnipFMC, BTG-BTL Plan Swedish Bio-oil Facility (Int'l. Report)

In the Netherlands, BTG-BTL reports it has teamed up with TechnipFMC to design and construct a production facility in Sweden to convert wood residues such as sawdust into bio-oil which will then be processed into a transportation biofuel for blending with other fuels.

The facility will use pyrolysis technology to process approximately 35,000-40,000 tpy of wood residues into oil. The end fuel product will European REDII directive compliant.

TechnipFMC and BTG-BTL have already been awarded an order to construct a similar production facility in Finland, with the option to extend to four. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in 2019, with production slated for 2021. Wheat Straw Isobutene Demo Scale Success Reported (Ind. Report)

Evry, France-based Global Bioenergies is reporting the successful production of cellulosic isobutene using wheat straw hydrolysate provided by its partner Clariant at its Leuna Demo Plant. The initial demo plants runs were part of OPTISOCHEM (OPTimized conversion of residual wheat straw to bio-ISObutene for bio based CHEMicals), a 2017 project with €9.8 million in grant funding from the Bio Based Industry- Joint Undertaking (BBI-JU) as part of the H2020 program.

The project aimed to demonstrate a new value chain combining Global Bioenergies bio-Isobutene process with technologies developed by Clariant and INEOS, two of Europe's leading chemical companies. OPTISOCHEM focuses on:

  • Conversion of straw into glucose- and xylose-rich hydrolysates by Clariant sunliquid technology:

  • Fermentation of the straw hydrolysates into bio-isobutene by Global Bioenergies;

  • Conversion of bio-isobutene into oligomers and polymers by INEOS;

  • Preliminary engineering of an hydrolysate-to-isobutene plant and overall integration with a straw-to-hydrolysate plant, by TechnipFMC and IPSB, (France), and

  • Assessment of the sustainability and environmental benefits by the Energy Institute at the JKU Linz (Austria).
