The facility is optimally located adjacent to a 20 megawatt (MW) wind farm and existing Hydro One electrical infrastructure. With support from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) and Hydro One, the facility originally demonstrated the effectiveness of distributed energy resources (DERs) and successfully completed reactive power validation and power quality testing. Ten 500 kilowatt (kW) flywheels were deployed in a modular arrangement to deliver 10 MW of flexible range (+/-5 MW) to the Ontario grid.

The demonstration plant project is intended to demonstrate technology for the co-production of value-added and sustainable bioproducts that will help transform the wood pulp mill into a biorefinery. The process is expected to validate performance and produce pre-commercial quantities of food-grade xylitol and complementary bioproducts for testing and use by customers.

CO2 Solutions expects to increase the overall capture rate to validate the unit's nominal capacity of 30 tpd of CO2.
The Saint-Felicien unit, which is a 3x scale-up from the company's currently operating 10-tdp unit in Montreal-East,
involves the deployment of a 30-tpy CO2 capture unit and ancillary equipment and the commercial reuse of the captured CO2 by the adjacent Toundra Greenhouse complex.
The Saint-Felicien CO2 capture unit was partly financed with investments from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) and the Technoclimat programme of the Quebec government as well as a loan from Canada Economic Development (CED).

Enerkem's Edmonton facility is the first ever municipal waste-to-cellulosic ethanol plant to receive approval to sell in the United States. Under the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, 16 billion gallons of cellulosic biofuels are to be blended in the conventional transportation fuel pool by 2022.
Enerkem is now registered for D3 Renewable identification numbers (RINs) credits.
Previously this year, the Edmonton biofuel facility was expanded to produce 13 million gpy of cellulosic ethanol following the commissioning of its methanol-to-ethanol conversion unit. The Edmonton plant was funded by private sources, Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), Alberta Innovates and Alberta Energy.
