EQTEC Upgrading Spanish Waste-to-Energy Facility for Biofuel Production (Int'l. Report)

Cork, Ireland-headquartered waste gasification-to-energy specialist EQTEC PLC is reporting receipt of a contract to upgrade the existing syngas research and development facility at the University of Extremadura in Badajoz, Spain.

The university has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support the testing of the production of biofuels from syngas using a Fischer-Tropsch process and unit.

Under the contract, EQTEC will be responsible for purchasing, installing, commissioning and start-up of the Fischer-Tropsch unit, for which it has secured financing from CAIXA Bank in Spain. Installation is slated for completion in Q3, this year.

The Fischer-Tropsch process is a catalytic chemical reaction in which compounds in syngas are converted into liquid transportation fuels. Following completion of this upgrade, EQTEC will be able to conduct tests using varied biomass and waste feedstocks, which will be processed into a clean syngas and then into sustainable biofuels, including biodiesel. Eni JV to Investigate Castor as Biofuel Feedstock (Int'l Report)

Italian energy giant Eni S.p.A. is reporting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tunisia's Societe National de Distribution des Petroles (SNDP) to create a joint venture company for the cultivation of castor as a sustainable biofuels feedstock to replace palm oil. Castor is native to Tunisia.

Eni S.p.A. is an Italian multinational oil and gas company headquartered in Rome with operations in 79 countries, and is currently world's 11th largest industrial company with a market capitalization of €68 billion euros, as of August 14, 2013, according to Wikipedia. TRC-Q Announces Microalgae Biofuels R&D Projects (Ind. Report)

Reporting from the Qatar Science & Technology Park, Total Research Centre-Qatar (TRC-Q) is announcing the launch of two new research projects using locally sourced microalgae to produce sustainable biofuels and for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). The Centre is also collaborating with Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute to develop various clean energy technologies, products and solutions.

According to the release, TRC-Q currently has projects for analytical organic geochemistry and acid stimulation of wells to improve production, as well as flagship projects related to sustainable development, marine biodiversity biofuels and solar energy Microalgae is a promising pathway to sustainable Biofuels and TRC-Q is working with QU and universities and research organisations in the Netherlands, France and China to explore biofuels, as an option for limiting transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, according to the release. UPM Touts BioVerno Diesel to Cut Emissions (Int'l. Report)

(UPM, Helsinki, 7 March 2019 at 10.00 EET) - In Finland, Helsinki headquartered renewable diesel producer UPM is reporting recent off-road vehicle tests at the VTT Technical Research Centre confirm that renewable UPM BioVerno diesel reduces tailpipe emissions. Both the nitrogen oxide and particle emissions were around 10 pct less when compared to a fossil reference fuel.

High quality sustainable biofuels are a cost-efficient alternative to help reduce traffic emissions and they can be adopted without any changes to vehicles. UPM Biofuels participates in Bio100, a four-year project co-ordinated by VTT with the goal of increasing the share of biofuels used in combustion engines in Helsinki area to at least 50 pct by 2017 and to 70-90 pct by the end of 2019, according to the UPM release. Boskalis Touts Boskalis-on-Bio, GoodFuels Partnership (Int'l)

The Dutch marine dredging and heavy lift company Boskalis reports it is using a 30 pct biofuel blend onboard the large trailing suction hopper dredger Prins der Nederlanden for the Borssele Alpha project which is being carried out on behalf of TenneT.

Using biofuel is one aspect of the Boskalis-on-Bio programme, for which the company recently signed a long-term partnership with biofuel supplier GoodFuels. The programme is aimed at achieving a 35 pct reduction in the CO2 emitted by the Boskalis fleet and equipment in the Netherlands in the next five years. According to Boskalis, various sea trials have shown that sustainable biofuels lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 90 pct compared to fossil fuels and are also more effective than alternatives such as LNG. Qatar SDC Developing Biocrude Technologies (R&D, Int'l Report)

In Qatar, the Sustainable Development Centre (SDC) at Qatar University's College of Arts and Sciences (QU-CAS) reports it is developing the techniques to produce bio-crude oil through its Qatar Biofuel Project aimed at finding a way to produce affordable and sustainable biofuels.

"Production of biofuels can also be done efficiently under searing temperatures and without relying on Qatar's arable land," said SDC director and Qatar Biofuel Project manager Hareb al-Jabri. In a statement, he said the first phase of the project witnessed SDC’s research team producing biodiesel, bioethanol and bio-crude oil. These fuels should provide an additive source of energy, specifically for use by the airline industry.

According to Al-Jabri, the project adds value to the country's oil and gas sector as it aims to support the vision of Qatar Airways to use environmentally-friendly fuel in the airline industry, reducing the negative environmental effects of conventional fuel. He added that the project will also contribute to carbon dioxide sequestration by recycling it to produce biofuels. Chinese Shougang LanzaTech JV to Produce Ethanol from CO2 (Int'l)

Chinese steel and iron producer Shougang Group is reporting the upcoming March opening of a facility that can convert industrial waste gas to sustainable biofuels in the city of Caofeidian.

The facility will utilize equipment from the joint venture company Shougang LanzaTech to convert industrial waste gas to liquid ethanol with a purity of 99.5 pct and compressed natural gas.

The facility, which is the world's first commercial project of its kind, uses the technology developed by the U.S. biotech company LanzaTech, and is expected to produce 46,000 tpy of ethanol fuel, 76.5 million tpy of animal feed and 3.3 million cubic meters of compressed natural gas per year. LSB Lobbies for 2021 EU Advanced Biofuels Mandate Start (Int'l)

In a move to bolster advanced biofuels investor confidence, Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels (LSB), a coalition of 12 advanced biofuels producers and technology developers, is calling on EU institutions to set its new advanced biofuels blend mandate -- Annex IX part A of the Renewable Energy Directive -- to begin in 2021. The coalition is chaired by UPM Public Affairs director Marko Janhunen.

According to a LSB statement, the European Commission and European Parliament are aligned with the request for the advanced biofuels mandate to come into effect in 2018. However, the European Council is proposing for the mandate to kick off in 2025. LSB argues that if the Council gets its way, there would be significant political insecurity for sector, jeopardizing the swift uptake of advanced biofuels in the EU. Conversely, a binding Annex IX part A based target would "set a strong framework for investments in sustainable, novel and innovative technologies and production facilities," according to the LSB statement. AltAir Biojet Fuel Producer Awarded RSB Certification (Ind. Report)

Seattle-based AltAir Fuels reports its 40 MMgy biojet fuel production facility in Paramount, California, has been certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) to produce biojet fuel, renewable diesel and naphtha. AltAir Fuels has been a member of the RSB since 2014.

According to Geneva-headquartered RSB, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (SAFUG) of 27 airlines endorses AltAir's fuels. SAFUG members have pledged to achieve RSB or equivalent certification. The Natural Resources Defense Council has also issued a recent report encouraging airlines to purchase certified-sustainable biofuels and recommended the RSB framework.

Since January 2016, AltAir has been the only refiner to continually produce biojet for commercial use.
