The university has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support the testing of the production of biofuels from syngas using a Fischer-Tropsch process and unit.
Under the contract, EQTEC will be responsible for purchasing, installing, commissioning and start-up of the Fischer-Tropsch unit, for which it has secured financing from CAIXA Bank in Spain. Installation is slated for completion in Q3, this year.
The Fischer-Tropsch process is a catalytic chemical reaction in which compounds in syngas are converted into liquid transportation fuels. Following completion of this upgrade, EQTEC will be able to conduct tests using varied biomass and waste feedstocks, which will be processed into a clean syngas and then into sustainable biofuels, including biodiesel.

High quality sustainable biofuels are a cost-efficient alternative to help reduce traffic emissions and they can be adopted without any changes to vehicles. Using biofuel is one aspect of the Boskalis-on-Bio programme, for which the company recently signed a long-term partnership with biofuel supplier GoodFuels.
The programme is aimed at achieving a 35 pct reduction in the CO2 emitted by the Boskalis fleet and equipment in the Netherlands in the next five years. According to Boskalis, various sea trials have shown that sustainable biofuels lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 90 pct compared to fossil fuels and are also more effective than alternatives such as LNG.

"Production of biofuels can also be done efficiently under searing temperatures and without relying on Qatar's arable land," said SDC director and Qatar Biofuel Project manager Hareb al-Jabri. In a statement, he said the first phase of the project witnessed SDC’s research team producing biodiesel, bioethanol and bio-crude oil. These fuels should provide an additive source of energy, specifically for use by the airline industry.
According to Al-Jabri, the project adds value to the country's oil and gas sector as it aims to support the vision of Qatar Airways to use environmentally-friendly fuel in the airline industry, reducing the negative environmental effects of conventional fuel.
He added that the project will also contribute to carbon dioxide sequestration by recycling it to produce biofuels.

The facility will utilize equipment from the joint venture company Shougang LanzaTech to convert industrial waste gas to liquid ethanol with a purity of 99.5 pct and compressed natural gas.
The facility, which is the world's first commercial project of its kind, uses the technology developed by the U.S. biotech company LanzaTech, and is expected to
produce 46,000 tpy of ethanol fuel, 76.5 million tpy of animal feed and 3.3 million cubic meters of compressed natural gas per year.

According to a LSB statement, the European Commission and European Parliament are aligned with the request for the advanced biofuels mandate to come into effect in 2018. However, the European Council is proposing for the mandate to kick off in 2025.
LSB argues that if the Council gets its way, there would be significant political insecurity for sector, jeopardizing the swift uptake of advanced biofuels in the EU. According to Geneva-headquartered RSB, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (SAFUG) of 27 airlines endorses AltAir's fuels. SAFUG members have pledged to achieve RSB or equivalent certification. The Natural Resources Defense Council has also issued a recent report encouraging airlines to purchase certified-sustainable biofuels and recommended the RSB framework.
