GCE's Camelina Company Espana Acquisition Completed (M&A, Int'l)

Torrance, California-based renewable fuels producer Global Clean Energy Holdings, Inc. (GCE) is reporting the acquisition Madrid-headquartered Camelina Company Espana S.L. (CCE), Europe's largest camelina producer .

CCE has for more than 10 years developed intellectual property (IP) in camelina to support a sustainable biofuels value chain. CCE's IP includes superior genetics, breeding capabilities, high quality planting seed, advanced agronomic research, and knowledge to support the cultivation of camelina by contract farmers. CCE, together with Seattle-based Sustainable Oils, Inc. (SusOils), also a wholly owned subsidiary of GCE, will further enhance the company's portfolio of patented camelina genetics.

Camelina is an essential part of the feedstock plan for GCE's integrated farm-to-fuels strategy. In early 2022, GCE will open a newly renovated renewable diesel biorefinery in Bakersfield, California, US, and supply ExxonMobil up to 220 million gallons annually of renewable diesel under a pair of long-term purchase agreements, according to the release. Celtic Announces Plant Opening, Crowdfunding Campaign (Int'l.)

In the UK, Edinburgh-based low-carbon biotech Celtic Renewables is reporting a "crowd funding" campaign to support its international development plans.

Last year the company raised £3.68 million from almost 2,500 crowd investors to help complete their 1 million lpy sustainable biochemicals plant at Caledon Green in Grangemouth, Scotland. The Caledon Green plant is the company's first biorefinery and the first such facility in Scotland. The plant will use Celtic Renewables’ patented technology to convert 50,000 tpy of low-value biological material into renewable chemicals, sustainable biofuel, and other commercially and environmentally valuable commodities.

Celtic Renewables has also announced a strategic partnership with Caldic, a global leading solutions provider for the life science and specialty chemical industries. GoodFuels, Unifeeder Boost Marine Fleet Decarbonisation (Int'l.)

Amsterdam-based sustainable marine biofuels specialist GoodFuels and the international feeder and short-sea company Unifeeder are reporting their first bunkering of Unifeeder's container ship Elbsummer with marine biofuel in the Port of Rotterdam.

GoodFuels supplies 'drop-in' sustainable biofuels to the global shipping industry. DP World-owned Unifeeder is positioning itself as a frontrunner for sustainability in shipping, and is dedicated to reducing its fleet's greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2040.

GoodFuels' marine biofuel is derived from used cooking oil (UCO), tallow, and waste animal fats and can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90 pct compared with conventional bunker fuels, according to GoodFuels. United, Honeywell to Invest in SAF Startup (Ind. Report)

United Airlines Holdings Inc. and Honeywell International Inc. are reporting a multi-million dollar investment in Alder Energy LLC, a clean-technology company to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at scale.

Alder's technology converts woody biomass, forest and agricultural waste to produce SAF while using the same refineries, pipelines and engines as traditional fuel. United, which began using biofuels in 2009, has also pledged to buy 1.5 billion gallons of SAF over the next 20 years.

The company in 2015 made a similar commitment with alternative fuels developer Fulcrum BioEnergy Inc., agreeing to buy up to 900 million gallons of low-cost sustainable biofuels from waste, particularly woody biomass from the paper and pulp industry, the food industry and others.

The companies hope to commercialize the technology by 2025. Repsol Announces Third Spanish SAF Production Run (Int'l.)

In Madrid, Repsol is reporting the production of the first batch -- 5,300 tons -- of sustainable biojet fuel produced from waste on the Spanish market at its Petronor Industrial Complex in Bilbao. The fuel, which meets meets product quality requirements and sustainability conditions in the production, logistics, and marketing chain and will avoid 300 tpy of CO2e emissions.

This is Repsol's third production of SAF biojet in Spain following production at the company's Puertollano and Tarragona refineries, in 2020 and early 2021, respectively. The company's Strategic Plan 2020-2025, calls for the production of 1.3 million tons of sustainable biofuels in 2025 and more than 2 million tons in 2030. Rolls-Royce Driving Toward Sustainable Biofuels (Ind. Report)

Engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce Power Systems reports it will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35 pct, compared to its 2019 level, by 2030 through the use of new net-zero and zero carbon technologies, and a new focus on engines that run on sustainable fuels from as early as 2023.

Key to meeting these goals is the certification of the most important engine products which will run on sustainable second generation biofuels and E-fuels from as early as 2023 and then be successively increased, according to the release. GoodFuels, ZERO Partner to Push Marine Biofuel (Int'l. Report)

Netherlands-based maritime biofuel supplier GoodFuels and Norwegian environmental non-profit organisation ZERO are reporting a partnership aimed at enhancing sustainability within the maritime biofuel supply chain.

Under the partnership, the organisations will work together to accelerate the shift to a renewable transport sector with a focus on sustainable biofuels for the maritime industry and establishing framework conditions for sustainable biofuels in the Nordic countries.

The two organizations will also work together on driving increased demand for renewable shipping solutions by analysing policymaking, engaging with decision-makers, and advocating for uptake of sustainable biofuels with the industry and political leaders.

Under the partnership, ZERO also joins GoodFuels' independent sustainability board which consists of leading NGOs and academics in the sustainable transport and biofuels segments. ADB Supports Indian Biofuels (Int'l. Report, Funding)

The Manila-headquartered lending agency Asian Development Bank (ADB) is reporting approval of $2.5 million in technical assistance grant funding to support advanced biofuel development of advanced bioethanol, bio-compressed natural gas, and biodiesel plants to demonstrate the best practices for suitable feedstock, efficient conversion technology, and sustainable biofuel value chain in India.

The grant is funded from the Asia Clean Energy Fund, financed by the Government of Japan under the Clean Energy Financing Partnership Facility, and the Republic of Korea's e-Asia and Knowledge Partnership Fund. Quebec Supports Woody Biomass-to-Fuel Project (Ind. Report)

The Government of Quebec has announced $5.943 million ($4.55 million US) in funding to a non-profit organization Bioenergie La Tuque (BELT) to develop and demonstrate the potential of producing advanced biofuels from locally-sourced forestry waste, woody biomass in La Tuque, Quebec, Canada. The funding will be used to continue project development and plant design, and the potential of building a renewable fuels plant in the area.

BELT, the Council of the Atikamekw Nation and renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel provider Neste have been jointly assessing the feasibility of utilizing sustainably-sourced forest-based biomass and residues for advanced sustainable biofuels production since 2017.

The BioEnergie La Tuque project would utilize 650,000 metric tpy of forest biomass and aligns with and supports Quebec's established forest product industry and commitment to sustainable forestry management and biodiversity, according to the release. Steeper, Calgary Ink Renewable Fuel-from-Sewage MoU (Ind. Report)

On the Canadian prairies, the City of Calgary and Denmark-headquartered Steeper Energy’s Steeper Energy Canada Ltd. unit are reporting a MoU for the transformation of the city's sewage sludge and other urban generated bio-organic wastes for the production of sustainable biofuels such as renewable diesel or jet fuel.

Calgary and Steeper Energy are planning a demonstration plant at the Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in South-East Calgary. The plant will utilize Steeper's proprietary Hydrofaction® technology to produce renewable diesel or jet fuel from a small portion of the city's primary and secondary sewage sludge. Minship Bulk Carrier Trialing Marine Biofuel (Int'l. Report)

Bavarian ship management company Minship and its subsidiary Minmarine reports its bulk carrier ship Trudy recently completed a trial bunkering in Rotterdam GoodFuels' sustainable Bio-fuel Oil MR1-100 -- a second generation sustainable biofuel produced from certified feedstock labelled as waste or residue.

For the 8-10 day trial, the GoodFuels biofuel will be the only fuel burnt in the main engine of Trudy. During the trial, 90 pct of the CO2 emissions produced will not be counted under existing regulations for measuring GHG emissions. The trial is part of Minshipseffort to address shipping emissions and climate change concerns.

GoodFuels is a leading supplier of bio-based bunker fuel for the shipping sector, notably a wood-derived HFO substitute it calls "bio-fuel oil" which, as previously reported, has been used by Boskalis, Norden, CMA CGM, Wartsila and Ikea. EQTEC Upgrading Spanish Waste-to-Energy Facility for Biofuel Production (Int'l. Report)

Cork, Ireland-headquartered waste gasification-to-energy specialist EQTEC PLC is reporting receipt of a contract to upgrade the existing syngas research and development facility at the University of Extremadura in Badajoz, Spain.

The university has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support the testing of the production of biofuels from syngas using a Fischer-Tropsch process and unit.

Under the contract, EQTEC will be responsible for purchasing, installing, commissioning and start-up of the Fischer-Tropsch unit, for which it has secured financing from CAIXA Bank in Spain. Installation is slated for completion in Q3, this year.

The Fischer-Tropsch process is a catalytic chemical reaction in which compounds in syngas are converted into liquid transportation fuels. Following completion of this upgrade, EQTEC will be able to conduct tests using varied biomass and waste feedstocks, which will be processed into a clean syngas and then into sustainable biofuels, including biodiesel. Eni JV to Investigate Castor as Biofuel Feedstock (Int'l Report)

Italian energy giant Eni S.p.A. is reporting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tunisia's Societe National de Distribution des Petroles (SNDP) to create a joint venture company for the cultivation of castor as a sustainable biofuels feedstock to replace palm oil. Castor is native to Tunisia.

Eni S.p.A. is an Italian multinational oil and gas company headquartered in Rome with operations in 79 countries, and is currently world's 11th largest industrial company with a market capitalization of €68 billion euros, as of August 14, 2013, according to Wikipedia. Reporting from the Qatar Science & Technology Park, Total Research Centre-Qatar (TRC-Q) is announcing the launch of two new research projects using locally sourced microalgae to produce sustainable biofuels and for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). The Centre is also collaborating with Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute to develop various clean energy technologies, products and solutions.

Biodico, Azelio Partner on Plant Energy Storage (Ind. Report)

Gothenburg, Sweden-headquartered Azelio -- fka Cleanergy -- energy storage solutions provider Azelio reports it is partnering with Ventura, California-based sustainable biofuel producer Biodico to develop 120MW in thermal energy storage systems for Bioico's planned on-site renewable energy powered biofuel production centers in California by 2024.

Azelio's systems will feature solar PV, wind, as well as its power storage unit, which will ensure supply of base-load energy. The projects include a 13kWe energy storage that is slated for completion in 2021, followed by other projects including 15MWe in 2022, 35MWe in 2023 and 70MWe in 2024.

Finnair Touts First "Push for Change" Biofuel Flights (Int'l)

Finnair reports it's first biofuel flights -- August 5th and 7th from Sanfrancisco to Helsinki -- backed by its "Push for Change" carbon decreasing initiative. The flights were fueled with a 12 pct biofuel mix reducing the total C02 emissions for the two flights by approximately 32 tons.

Finnair's biofuels partners in San Francisco are SkyNRG and World Energy; Shell Aviation has provided logistics and supply chain support for the project. The sustainable biofuel was produced from used cooking oil in California. GoodShipping Marine Biofuel Tests Slated for Next Week (Int'l Report)

In Amsterdam, GoodShipping Program reports testing will commence with the sustainable biofuel bunkering of a CMA CGM container vessel at the Port of Rotterdam on 19 March, 2019. The testing is a sustainable initiative dedicated to decarbonizing ocean freight and the scaling of low-carbon marine biofuel oils for wider commercial use within the maritime industry.

The fuel being tested has been developed by sustainable marine biofuels producer GoodFuels. The second-generation biofuel oil is completely derived from forest residues and waste oil products and, in addition to virtually eliminating SOx emissions, is expected to deliver 80-90 pct well-to-propeller CO2 reduction versus fossil equivalents without engine modifications. The program aims to demonstrate the scalability, sustainability and technical compliance of sustainable marine biofuel oil, and thereby spur the wider continued development of realistic options to curb GHG and SOx emissions from shipping. UPM Touts BioVerno Diesel to Cut Emissions (Int'l. Report)

(UPM, Helsinki, 7 March 2019 at 10.00 EET) - In Finland, Helsinki headquartered renewable diesel producer UPM is reporting recent off-road vehicle tests at the VTT Technical Research Centre confirm that renewable UPM BioVerno diesel reduces tailpipe emissions. Both the nitrogen oxide and particle emissions were around 10 pct less when compared to a fossil reference fuel.

High quality sustainable biofuels are a cost-efficient alternative to help reduce traffic emissions and they can be adopted without any changes to vehicles. UPM Biofuels participates in Bio100, a four-year project co-ordinated by VTT with the goal of increasing the share of biofuels used in combustion engines in Helsinki area to at least 50 pct by 2017 and to 70-90 pct by the end of 2019, according to the UPM release.
