TECO 2030 Touts Future Funnel Emissions System (Int'l. Report)

Oslo-headquartered Norwegian engineering firm TECO 2030 ASA reports the launch of its market-ready TECO 2030 Future Funnel hybrid and closed-loop emissions systems aimed at reducing SOx, NOx, further improvement of PM and BC emission reductions and ultimately integrated CO2 capture technology.

The closed loop system is primarily used for maritime vessels operating in areas where discharges overboard are prohibited and seawater alkalinity is low. The exhaust gases are washed on board, and substances are collected in a separate tank on board, which is emptied into ports for appropriate further treatment. The system gives ship owners a more flexible control of emissions and environmental impacts. VW Bunkering with GoodFuels B100 (Int'l. Report)

In an effort to lower its CO2 emissions by as much as 85 pct on certain vehicle shipments in Europe, German automaker Volkswagen Group reports it will bunker two of its maritime vehicle carriers with B100, "drop-in" biofuel from Dutch fuel supplier GoodFuels.

Because it substantially reduces CO2 and SOX emissions, GoodFuels' Bio Fuel Oil further ensures marine shipping firms' compliance with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 Sulphur Cap, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction requirements and upcoming regulations to reduce carbon intensity from shipping. Refueling with B100 is expected to cut ship CO2 emissions by a minimum of 85 pct and eliminate SOx emissions. Emissions Data Shows Advanced Diesel Helps Clean Air (Ind. Report)

The not-for-profit Diesel Technology Forum is reporting the just released emissions inventory from the Port of Long Beach (POLB) California shows "the introduction of new generation diesel trucks has generated substantial clean air benefits for communities located near freight facilities."

The report notes "In 2019, trucks serving the POLB accounted for just 7 tons of fine particle (PM 2.5) emissions, down from 186 tons in 2005, due in part to the introduction of new technology diesel trucks even as cargo volumes grew by 14 pct. In 2005, trucks were the second leading source of all PM 2.5 emissions after ocean going vessels. In 2019, port trucks were the second smallest source of PM 2.5 emissions after cargo-handling equipment.

"The Clean Trucks Program, instituted jointly by the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, requires that all trucks meet the latest tailpipe emissions standard for PM 2.5 and new trucks entering service in the port as of 2018 must meet the near-zero tailpipe emissions standard for ozone forming compounds (NOx) as well. According to the latest data, 90 pct of the estimated 14,000 port trucks entering and exiting marine terminals in southern California are powered by diesel and about 65 pct are of the latest generation diesel technology that achieve near-zero emissions performance for both NOx and PM 2.5. The report concludes that the effectiveness of the Clean Trucks Program in expanding the clean air benefits can be realized with the adoption of advanced technology diesel trucks." Wartsila Aims to Cut Maritime CO2, SOX, NOX Emissions (Int'l. Report)

Helsinki-headquartered Wartsila Group reports its EU-funded three-year collaborative SeaTech project could produce significant reductions in maritime shipping industry fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and deliver a 400 pct return on investment.

The SeaTech project aims is to research, develop, and integrate technologies that will deliver a 30 pct reduction in fuel consumption, a 46 pct reduction in CO2 emissions, a 94 pct reduction in particulate matter emissions, and a 99 pct reduction in Sox and NOx emissions, according to the release.

The project aims to harness fuel-efficient propulsion methods through Wartsila's existing symbiotic ship engine and propulsion technologies -- a bio-mimetic dynamic wing mounted at the bow of the vessel to allow for wave energy augmented propulsion when the vessel navigates moderate and heavy sea conditions. Atlantic City Electric Proposes Energy Saving Programs (Ind. Report)

In the Garden State, Atlantic City Electric has proposed numerous energy efficiency programs to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) that offer a range of incentives for energy efficiency upgrades, rebates on energy-efficient products, and a mixture of other offerings to help people use less energy. The programs will help the state's Clean Energy Act energy savings goal and help the state meet its climate goals for a clean and sustainable energy future. According to Atlantic City Electric, every dollar invested in these energy efficiency programs customers will receive nearly $4 in benefits.

Atlantic City Electric's programs are anticipated to result in more than 6,000 job-years, provide more than $500 million to New Jersey's GDP and support local businesses. Participating businesses can also reduce their operating costs by lowering their energy bills. The programs are expected to significantly cut customer energy demands and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.5 million tpy , SOX emissions by 885 tpy and NOX emissions by 783 tpy. BMW Continues GoodShipping Biofuel-Oil Bunker Tests (Int'l.)

European vehicle logistics provider United European Car Carriers (UECC) reports is partnering with car manufacturer BMW Group to continue to test marine Bio Fuel-Oil (BFO) on UECC's "roll on, roll off" car carrying vessels. The BFO -- based on cooking oil -- being used for the trial is supplied by Netherlands-based GoodFuels.

BMW Group will be joining the previously announced trial with the GoodShipping Program , where BFO is being tested on UECC's 2,080-vehicle carrier M/V Autosky. By covering the fuel premium for a biofuel volume corresponding to BMW Group’s freight that will be shipped on M/V Autosky during the trial period, BMW Group will be able to claim a CO2 emission reduction of 80 to 90 pct for these shipments -- more than 400 tonnes of carbon. The marine biofuel is virtually sulfur oxide (SOx) free and delivers 80 to 90 pct well-to-exhaust CO2 reduction versus fossil equivalents, according to GoodFuels. Gasum Completes Norwegian LNG Marine Fuel Bunkering (Int'l.)

The Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum is reporting a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering for the world's largest semi-submersible crane vessel, which is owned by Netherlands-based marine contracting firm Heerema.

As a marine fuel, LNG meets all current and forthcoming IMO and EU regulations. In addition, the use of LNG removes all Sox emissions and particles and reduces Nox emissions by 85 pct compared to heavy fuel oil. Gothenburg, Sweden-headquartered marine tanker operator Stena Bulk is reporting the satisfactory completion of its Bio Fuel Oil (BFO) trial with GoodFuels in a typical commercial operation. The fuel, which GoodFuels launched in 2018, reportedly cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 83 pct and substantially reduces SOX emissions, according to GoodFuels.

Because it substantially reduces CO2 and SOX emissions, GoodFuels' Bio Fuel Oil further ensures marine shipping firms' compliance with the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) 2020 Sulphur Cap, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction requirements and upcoming regulations to reduce carbon intensity from shipping. GoodShipping Marine Biofuel Tests Slated for Next Week (Int'l Report)

In Amsterdam, GoodShipping Program reports testing will commence with the sustainable biofuel bunkering of a CMA CGM container vessel at the Port of Rotterdam on 19 March, 2019. The testing is a sustainable initiative dedicated to decarbonizing ocean freight and the scaling of low-carbon marine biofuel oils for wider commercial use within the maritime industry.

The fuel being tested has been developed by sustainable marine biofuels producer GoodFuels. The second-generation biofuel oil is completely derived from forest residues and waste oil products and, in addition to virtually eliminating SOx emissions, is expected to deliver 80-90 pct well-to-propeller CO2 reduction versus fossil equivalents without engine modifications. The program aims to demonstrate the scalability, sustainability and technical compliance of sustainable marine biofuel oil, and thereby spur the wider continued development of realistic options to curb GHG and SOx emissions from shipping.
