NSF Funds Building Energy Smart Technologies Center (Ind. Report)
University of Colorado Boulder
Date: 2021-09-24
The University of Colorado Boulder and City College of New York are announcing the Building Energy Smart Technologies (BEST) Center, a joint research center for sustainable building technology. The Center will receive $1.5 million over 5 years from the National Science Foundation with matching funds from industry partners to advance sustainable buildings and cities ranging from HVAC manufacturing, to smart glazing for windows, smart building controls, advanced insulation materials, new energy storage systems, and improved air quality systems. It will also seek to promote the integration of renewables such as solar systems.

CU Boulder will lead the project with CCNY as a partner site. The effort is focused on business collaboration, directing research into areas needed for the construction industry and building retrofits.

The new center will operate under the NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers model designed to help startups, large corporate partners and government agencies connect directly with university researchers to develop new technology faster in a low-risk environment. In addition to meeting emissions goals, new smart and adaptable technologies in the built environment will provide responses for increasingly frequent extreme weather events due to the rapidly changing climate. Bloom Energy Deploys First Hydrogen Powered Fuel Cell (Ind. Report)
Bloom Energy
Date: 2021-05-12
California-based Bloom Energy reports it and Seoul, South Korea-headquartered SK Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. have successfully deployed 100 kilowatts of solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFC) powered solely by hydrogen in Ulsan, South Korea, generating zero-carbon onsite electricity.

Bloom Energy first announced its initial plans to enter the commercial hydrogen market in July 2020, which includes an intended 1-MW hydrogen-powered Energy Server installation with SK E&C by 2022. Additionally, Bloom Energy intends to supply its solid-oxide electrolyzer cells (SOEC), which are designed to produce green hydrogen via solar and battery, to South Korea in 2022 as part of the RE100 project. The green hydrogen produced by the SOEC, which is created through electrolysis by converting water and renewable electricity into hydrogen without carbon emissions, will be used to power the hydrogen SOFC.

Hydrogen fuel cells, which convert hydrogen into electricity through a non-combustion electrochemical process, are increasingly recognized as an essential tool for full decarbonization, according to the release. Elon Musk Comments on a U.S. Carbon Tax (Notable Quote)
Elon Musk
Date: 2021-02-15
Following up on our 22 Jan coverage -- Elon Musk Offers $100Mn for Best Carbon Capture Tech -- the the battery energy storage, SpaceX and Tesla tycoon announced:

"I talked to the Biden administration, and they were like 'Well, this seems too politically difficult' and I was like, 'Well, this is obviously a thing that should happen', and by the way, SpaceX would be paying a carbon tax too. So I'm like, you know, I'm like, I think we should pay it too. It's not like we shouldn't have carbon generating things. It's just that there's got to be a price on this stuff," Musk said.

"If we just put a price on carbon emissions, the market will react in a sensible way. But because we don`t have a price on it, it is behaving badly," Musk noted.

"It's either we have sustainable energy or civilization collapses. And so if civilization doesn't collapse we will have sustainable energy, it's just a question of how soon does that happen. Sooner is better," Musk elaborated. (Source: Elon Musk, DNA, 13 Feb., 2021) Contact: Elon Musk (@elonmusk)

Norsk e-Fuel Plans Norwegian Renewable Fuel Plant (Int'l. Report)
Norsk e-Fuel
Date: 2020-06-10
The Norwegian consortium Norsk e-Fuel reports it is planning Europe's first commercial plant in Heroya, Norway for hydrogen-based renewable aviation fuel. The plant will produce 10 million lpy when commissioned in 2023 before expanding production to 100 million lpy of renewable fuel before 2026, according to a Reuters report.

Using electrolysis, renewable energy, water and CO2 captured from air are converted into syngas. Renewable fuels, such as jet fuel, are then produced through further processing and refining. The end products can then be used directly in existing infrastructures, the consortium said. The upscaled, industrial sized plant will serve as blueprint for a nationwide roll-out of the project, it added.

The consortium members include: Sunfire GmbH; carbon dioxide capture technology firm Climeworks AG; engineering company Paul Wurth SA and green investment company Valinor. (Source: Norsk e-Fuel, Reuters, 9 June, 2020) Contact: Norsk e-Fuel, info@norsk-e-fuel.com, www.norsk-e-fuel.com/en
