Bio-based Dyneema Effort Announced (Int'l. Report)

Royal DSM, SABIC, and UPM Biofuels report they are joining forces to help reduce the environmental footprint of Royal DSM's Dyneema -- "the world's strongest fibre" -- and see Dyneema transition to bio-based feedstock leveraging Saudi Arabia-based SABIC's TRUCIRCLE solutions for certified renewable products.

The Dyneema bio-based material will be ISCC Plus certified and is expected to be available from April 2020.

Finland-based UPM Biofuels produces bio-based feedstock UPM BioVerno from the residue of the pulping process. This is then processed by SABIC to make renewable ethylene. TRUCIRCLE includes certified renewable products, specifically resins and chemicals from bio-based feedstock that are not in competition with the food chain and help to reduce carbon emissions. By applying a mass balancing approach, DSM is then able to create bio-based Dyneema fibre, according to the DSM release. POET Temporarily Halting Project Liberty Biofuel Prod. (Ind. Report)

Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based POET-DSM Advanced Biofuel reports it is temporarily halting production of cellulosic biofuels at its Emmetsburg, Iowa, facility due in part to the uncertainties surrounding the EPA's Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) policies.

The company, a 50/50 joint venture between Royal DSM and POET, LLC., will now focus on R&D aimed at improving mechanical reliability, creating additional technological efficiencies and licensing technologies in countries that support the use of low carbon fuels from crop residue and other biomass, according to the company. 28 Major Corporations Set New Level of Climate Ambition (Int'l. Report)

In a joint press release from the United Nations Global Compact, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the We Mean Business have committed themselves to more ambitious climate targets aligned with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degree C above pre-industrial levels and reaching net-zero emissions by no later than 2050. The joint commitment from the coalition 28 companies with a total market capitalization of $1.3 trillion heeds the most recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which warned of catastrophic consequences should global warming exceed 1.5 degree C.

GEVO Adopts DSM eBOOST Yeast for Ethanol Production (Ind. Report)

Englewood, Colorado-based isobutanol specialist GEVO, Inc. reports it has adopted Netherlands-headquartered Royal DSM's new eBOOST yeast for enhanced ethanol production at its facility in Luverne, MN. eBOOST offers improved yields and enhanced profitability.

While we are continuing to aggregate demand for isobutanol, jet fuel, and isooctane with a view to building out large capacity for those products, ethanol production is the key to driving profitability in the near term. DSM full-scale application trials of eBOOST demonstrated that the solution increases ethanol yields up to 6 pct and reduces glycerol formation more effectively than other industry-standard yeast products, GEVO says. BRD, Alkol BioTech Ink EUnergyCane Supply LoI (Ind. Report)

Bio Refinery Development BV (BRD) reports the signing of a letter of intent (LOI) with London-based Alkol Biotech for the supply of up to 500,000 tpy of EUnergyCane, a sugarcane variety, to be used as feedstock at a proposed biorefinery.

Alkol Biotech adapts plant varieties to grow in colder and drier climates, offering better resistance to pests and diseases, along with higher productivity. The first crop it is developing is EUnergyCane, a sugarcane variety.

BRD is a commercialization partner in Bioforever (BIO-based products from FORestry via Economically Viable European Routes), a consortium of 14 companies in Europe that aims to build a biorefinery to produce products normally sourced from oil. The consortium includes Avantium, Borregaard, Royal DSM, Green Biologics and MetGen. The consortium is addressing several pre-treatment technologies for the production of intermediates, such as cellulose, C5 and C6 sugars, lignin and humins.
