Arbor Taps Topsoe TIGAS™ Tech. for Renewable Gas (Ind. Report)

In the Lone Star State, Houston-based industrial-scale renewable gasoline and green hydrogen projects developer Arbor Renewable Gas, LLC reports it will use Topsoe's TIGAS™ technology for producing renewable gasoline (RG) at a new facility in the Gulf Coast region. The facility is expected to be operational by 2024 to produce 1,000 bdp of RG with a significantly negative carbon intensity score under California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard.

Topsoe will supply the methanol synthesis technologies and the TIADS™ backend gasoline synthesis unit (TIGAS). The methanol synthesis loop is based on the modular MeOH-To-Go™ design. Arbor Gas aims to build out a fleet of cost-effective, safe, and reliable woody biomass to renewable gasoline and renewable hydrogen plants around the world. UK Renewable Hydrogen Project to Use Food-Waste Biomethane (Int'l.)

In London, IBMS Group reports it will partner with Albuquerque, New Mexico-based BayoTech Inc. to launch the UK's first renewable hydrogen project using food waste to generate biomethane as a feedstock. The project will produce 1000kg per day and provide fuel for mobility projects in the London and Surrey region of the UK.

Using IBMS's food waste and biomethane expertise and BayoTech's modular SMR technology the partnership will create renewable hydrogen and high-grade fertiliser products from a multi-purpose eco facility. The project will produce 1,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day to fuel zero-emission vehicles in London and Surrey.

Further phases of the project will see carbon capture introduced to take the project from carbon neutral to carbon negative. The system is due to be online by Q2 of 2022, following which the system will be deployed at multiple locations around the UK to create a national network of carbon negative hydrogen production facilities.

According to the release, regional hydrogen production and distribution reduces unnecessary costs, storage, and transport leading to a reduced carbon footprint overall when compared with traditional production models and electrolyser systems. Orsted's First Renewable Hydrogen Project Underway (Int'l.)

Copenhagen-headquartered Orsted reports construction is underway on its first renewable hydrogen project -- H2RES. The 2-MW H2RES project, which will be situated on Orsted's premises on Avedore Holme in Copenhagen, will investigate how to best combine an efficient electrolyser with the fluctuating power supply from offshore wind, using Orsted's two 3.6 MW offshore wind turbines at Avedore Holme.

The facility will produce as much as 1,000 kg per day of renewable hydrogen which will be used to fuel zero-emission road transport fuel in the Copenhagen area and on Zealand. The project is expected to produce its first hydrogen before the end of the year.

Repsol Joins Renewable Hydrogen Consortium, Reports Aviation Biofuels Production (Int'l.)

Repsol is reporting the H24All project consortium has presented an application for European Green Deal funding to develop Europe's first 100 MW alkaline electrolyzer plant which will be connected to a Repsol industrial site. The technology will be demonstrated in real operation according to end-users' needs and market requirements for low-carbon hydrogen production and to boost the use of renewable hydrogen by reducing the cost to close to €3/kg H2.

The 15 member consortium of research centers, material suppliers, engineering firms specializing in electrolyzers, auto makers and others, aims to pave the way for a new and competitive hydrogen industry based on European know-how through innovation by developing, building, operating, and demonstrating the sustainability of a 100 MW high-pressure alkaline electrolyzer. Consortium partners are from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Spain, and Turkey.

In other Repsol news, on 21 Jan. the company reported production of the first 10,000 tonnes of aviation biofuel from biomass at its industrial complex in Tarragona in Spain. Additional aviation biofuel production is planned at the group's other industrial complexes in Spain. Last August the company reported production of its first batch of biofuel at the Puertollano Industrial Complex.

According to Spain's Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate, biofuels currently represent the most widely available and used renewable technology in transportation. In certain sectors, such as aviation, biojet fuel produced from biomass or waste is the only existing alternative to fossil fuels and is included in the list of sustainable fuels, according to the Plan. Following up on our 30 Dec., 2019 coverage, Fredericia, Denmark-based Orsted is reporting its final investment decision on the H2RES renewable hydrogen demonstration project at Avedore Holme in Copenhagen.

The project, the company's first renewable hydrogen project, will use offshore wind energy to produce renewable hydrogen. The H2RES project will investigate how to best combine an electrolyser with the fluctuating power supply from offshore wind, using Orsted's two 3.6-MW offshore wind turbines at Avedore Holme.

The 2 MW facility, which is expected to produce up to around 1,000 kg of renewable hydrogen transportation fuel daily, is slated to begin operation in late 2021. Offshore Hydrogen Production Project Funded (Funding, Int'l. Report)

A consortium of London-headquartered ITM Power plc, Orsted A/S, Siemens Gamesa and Cambridge, UK-based Element Energy is reporting receipt of €5 million in funding from the EC Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH2-JU) for the OYSTER project to investigate the feasibility and potential of combining a single offshore wind turbine directly with an electrolyzer and transporting renewable hydrogen to shore. The consortium will develop and test a megawatt-scale fully marinized electrolyzer in a shoreside pilot trial coordinated by Element Energy.

The OYSTER project aims to produce hydrogen from offshore wind at a cost that is competitive with natural gas (with a realistic carbon tax), thus unlocking bulk markets for green hydrogen making a meaningful impact on CO2 emissions, and facilitating the transition to a fully renewable energy system in Europe. The project is expected to run from 2021 through 2024 and is a key first step on the path to developing a commercial offshore hydrogen production industry and will demonstrate innovative solutions with significant potential in Europe and beyond.

For the project, ITM Power is responsible for the development of the electrolyzer system and electrolyzer trials, while Orsted will lead the offshore deployment analysis and feasibility study of future physical offshore electrolyzer deployments, and support ITM Power in the design of the electrolyzer system for marinization and testing. Enerkem Proposes Advanced Biorefinery in Quebec (Ind. Report)

Montreal-based biofuels-renewable fuels from wastes specialist Enerkem and strategic partners Shell, Suncor, Proman and Hydro-Quebec is reporting plans to develop a 33.2 million gpy biorefinery in Varennes, Quebec.

The proposed $875 million (Cdn) Varennes Carbon Recycling facility would produce ethanol and renewable chemicals from roughly 200,000 metric tpy of wood waste, forest biomass and non-recyclable plastic and solid waste materials using a proprietary thermochemical technology.

Enerkem notes the proposed project will leverage green hydrogen and oxygen produced through electrolysis and include construction of one of the world's largest renewable hydrogen and oxygen production facilities. UNSW Sydney Leading Hydrogen Supply Chain Collaboration (Int'l.)

In the Land Down Under, the University of New South Wales Sydney (UNSW) reports it will lead a consortium of German and Australian research and industry partners to test the feasibility of a renewable energy-based hydrogen supply chain between the two countries.

The two-year feasibility study will look for opportunities to collaborate on the production, storage, transport and use of hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources, as well as assess current technologies, identify regulatory and logistical barriers, and recommend business models for the development of this two-way trade and investment.

Australia and Germany have both released national hydrogen strategies to help support and grow the development of renewable hydrogen as a clean source of energy with the potential to lower national carbon emissions.

Yara, Orsted Planning Dutch Green Ammonia Production (Int'l. Report)

Danish utility Orsted and Norwegian fertiliser firm Yara have joined forces in developing a project aiming at replacing fossil hydrogen with renewable hydrogen in the production of "green" ammonia at Yara's plant in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The renewable hydrogen would generate around 75,000 tpy of green ammonia.

Haldor Topsoe Joins Danish Sustainable Fuel Project (Int'l. Report)

Denmark-headquartered Haldor Topsoe reports it is partnering with Orsted, Copenhagen Airports, A.P. Moller- Maersk, DSV Panalpina, DFDS, SAS, Nel, and Everfuel to develop a electrolysis-based hydrogen and sustainable fuels -- jet fuel, ammonia, and methanol -- production facility in the Greater Copenhagen .

The three-phase project is expected to be finalized by 2030. The first stage, which could be operational by as early as 2023, will comprise a 10 MW electrolysis plant producing renewable hydrogen for trucks and potentially buses. By 2027, the stage two facility equipped with a 250 MW electrolysis plant will combine the production of renewable hydrogen with captured CO2 from combustion of municipal waste or biomass to produce renewable methanol for maritime vessels and renewable jet fuel for planes. The last phase will upgrade the electrolysis plant's capacity to 1.3 GW and capture more CO2.

Goldwind Australia Project Considers Biofuels (Int'l. Report)

Westkuste 100 Renewable Hydrogen Project Confirms Funding (Int'l.)

The ten partners of the WESTKUSTE 100 project are reporting confirmation of €30 million in funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy for the first industrial-scale renewable hydrogen project in Germany within a "real-world laboratory" framework. The project has a total budget of €89 million.

With the grant approval, the Westkuste 100 project can now enter its first phase -- a newly founded "H2 Westkuste GmbH" joint venture consisting of EDF Germany, Orsted and the Heide refinery, to construct a 30-MW electrolyser to produce green hydrogen from offshore wind energy and to provide information on the operation, maintenance, control and grid services of the plant. European Clean Hydrogen Alliance Launched (Int'l. Report)

The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance will support the development of a clean and globally competitive hydrogen industry in Europe. Clean hydrogen technologies have the potential to achieve deep decarbonisation of some of Europe's most emitting industries, and play a key role in helping Europe to transition to a carbon neutral economy and become carbon neutral by 2050.

According to the Alliance , from 2025 to 2030, hydrogen needs to become an intrinsic part of our integrated energy system, with at least 40 gigawatts of renewable hydrogen electrolysers and the production of up to ten million tonnes of renewable hydrogen in the EU. From 2030 to 2050, renewable hydrogen technologies should reach maturity and be deployed at large scale across all hard-to-decarbonize sectors, according to the EU.

ITM Motive to Build, Own, Operate H2 Fueling Stations (Int'l.)

In the UK, Sheffield-headquartered ITM Power reports it is establishing ITM Motive as a separate, wholly owned subsidiary that will own and operate a network of 8 hydrogen refueling stations, which will expand to 11 by the end of 2020. South Australia Backs Renewable Hydrogen Fuel Ind. (Int'l Report)

In the Land Down Under, new research from The Australia Institute has found that South Australians support the creation of a hydrogen energy industry in the state if it uses renewable sources of energy. The report found:
  • 79 pct of South Australians would prefer that South Australian hydrogen fuel is generated from renewable sources. -- 6 pct would prefer that it is generated from fossil fuel sources.

  • 73 pct of South Australians say South Australia should only pursue a hydrogen fuel industry if it uses renewable energy -- 13 pct disagree.

    In Copenhagen, Danish renewable energy giant Orsted and six industrial partners -- Everfuel Europe A/S, NEL Hydrogen A/S, GreenHydrogen A/S, DSV Panalpina A/S, Hydrogen Denmark, and Energinet Elsystemansvar A/S -- is reporting receipt of €4.6 million in EUDP funding for construction of a 2MW H2RES electrolysis plant with appurtenant hydrogen storage in Denmark.

    The H2RES project will use power directly from Orsted's two Siemens Gamesa 3.6-MW offshore wind turbines at the Avedore Power Station to produce renewable hydrogen for road transportation fuel.     Electro-Active Technologies Converts Organic Waste Into Hydrogen for Biofuels (New Prod & Tech)

    Tennessee start-up Electro-Active Technologies reports it has licensed two biorefinery technologies invented and patented by the company's founders to convert organic waste into renewable hydrogen gas for use as a biofuel.

    Electro-Active Technologies is developing a modular system that can be placed onsite or in a decentralized location to produce renewable hydrogen from organic waste. The system combines biology and electrochemistry to degrade organic waste such as biomass or food waste, to produce hydrogen which then combines the protons and electrons into hydrogen molecules.

    The company originally developed their processes to tackle the problem of liquid waste formed during biofuel production; however, the company will now focus on fighting food waste, according to its website.     Oberon Fuels Planning Renewable Dimethyl Ether Production (Int'l)

    In the Golden State, San Diego-based clean transportation fuel producer Oberon Fuels is reporting receipt of almost $2.9 million in grant funding from the California Energy Commission (CEC). The funding is in support of a project to produce the the state's first renewable dimethyl ether (rDME), an economic fuel and key step in the development of a California-based, renewable hydrogen (rH2) pathway to zero-emission mobility fuel.

    Oberon plans to upgrade its existing DME pilot facility to demonstration scale to facilitate the first production of this renewable fuel. The company will test modified diesel trucks fueled with rDME, assess the feasibility of converting renewable methanol into rDME and developing associated fueling infrastructure, alongside commercial partners.     1,000-MW Utah Energy Storage Project Announced (Ind. Report)

    Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and Holloday, Utah-based Magnum Development are reporting plans to develop 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy storage in a Magnum-owned salt cavern in central Utah.

    The two firm's Advanced Clean Energy Storage (ACES) project will deploy four types of energy storage technologies at utility scale, which include renewable hydrogen, compressed air energy storage, large-scale flow batteries, and solid oxide fuel cells.

    The project is sited adjacent to the coal-fired Intermountain Power Project and will connect with the Western US power grid using existing infrastructure, according to the company.     Danbury, Conn.-based FuelCell Energy, Inc. is reporting receipt of $3,767,380 in funding from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) to enable the development of a renewable fuel cell project that will renewable hydrogen and power from onsite biogas while avoiding nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). SCAQMD is the air pollution control agency for all of Orange County and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino countries.
