African Development Bank,Eskom
Date: 2018-12-05
The African Development Bank (ADB) reports it has approved $220.1 million in debt for construction of the 100-MW Redstone concentrating solar power (CSP) project in Postmasburg, near Kimberley, South Africa. The project will incorporate molten salt energy storage capacity, a 1322-kV switching station and a 34-km (21.1-mile) transmission line.

The companies behind the project are Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power, US-based SolarReserve and state-owned Central Energy Fund of South Africa, which joined the scheme this summer. The project has a 20-year PPA with South African utility Eskom. (Source: African Development Bank, Dec., 2018) Contact: African Development Bank,

S. African Solar Thermal Power Storage Project Underway (Int'l)
Date: 2018-04-11
In South Africa, the Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, a consortium led by SolarReserve and International Company for Power and Water (ACWA), reports the 100-MW Redstone Solar Thermal Power Project in Postmasburg, Northern Cape Province, is underway. The project has a 20-year PPA with the South African public utility Eskom.

The Redstone project will incorporate SolarReserve's proprietary ThermaVault technology which integrates molten salt energy storage technology as well as heliostat collector field controls and tracking system.

In addition to the Redstone project, SolarReserve developed 246 MW of solar capacity already installed and operating in South Africa, 650 MW bid into expedited round 4.5 of the REIPPPP and a pipeline of over 2,000 MW. SunPower Completes Redstone Solar, Energy Storage Project (Ind. Report)
SunPower,Redstone Arsenal
Date: 2018-02-28
SunPower Corp. is reporting the commissioning and startup of a 10-MW solar photovoltaic and 1-MW energy storage system at the U.S. Army's Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.

The solar array and storage project was designed, built and will be operated and maintained by SunPower, with financing provided by Birmingham-headquartered Regions Bank.

This project is a collaboration between the U.S. Army Office of Energy Initiatives, Redstone Arsenal, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and SunPower, and features a SunPower Oasis® Power Plant system. The fully integrated, modular solar power block is engineered and built for compatibility with a future micro-grid, and is paired with storage to reduce peak power-related demand charges for Redstone Arsenal.

The Army is purchasing 100 percent of the electricity generated by the project through a 27-year PPA at rates competitive with traditional energy sources. (Source: SunPower, February, 2018) Contact: SunPower,; Redstone Arsenal,
