TC Energy Advancing Ontario Energy Storage Project (Ind. Report)

Calgary-based TC Energy Corp. is reporting an agreement with the Canadian Department of National Defense for development of a 1,000 MW pumped hydro energy storage project on federal lands in Ontario.

The multi-billion Ontario Pumped Storage Project, which would be Ontario's largest energy storage project, would optimize the province's electricity system and deliver roughly $250 million in annual savings to electricity consumers, provide emission-free electricity for the province while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an expected 490,000 tpy -- the equivalent of removing 150,000 cars from Ontario roads.

The project also aims in part to reduce the amount of electricity exported from the province to Quebec and Manitoba, as well as to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, at a loss of $384 million ($309 million US). (Source: TC Energy, PR, 28 July, 2021) Contact: TC Energy, 403-920-7859,

Loch Ness Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Gets the Nod (Int'l.)

The Scottish Government reports approval of Red John, a 450 MW pumped storage hydro scheme on the shores of Loch Ness.

Approval of the £550 million project signals the start of a process which could see hundreds of millions of pounds invested in the local economy and should bring up to 700 direct and indirect jobs to the area save over 45 million tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime. GE, BE Power Agree on Aussie Pumped Hydro Storage Project (Int'l.)

In the Land Down Under, GE Renewable Energy is reporting an agreement with Melbourne-based BE Power to co-develop a 400MW pumped hydro storage project in Toowoomba, Australia.

GE's Hydro Solutions business unit will provide design, technical and commercial support as well as help secure necessary financing for the project which, when fully operational, will generate sufficient power for 200,000 households in the state of Queensland. Chinese Utility Planning 6 GW of Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (Int'l)

In Beijing, China's State Grid Corporation of China reports it plans to invest $5.67 billion to construct five pumped-storage hydropower plants totaling 6 GW by 2026. The facilities are slated for the provinces of Jilin, Hebei, Shandong and Zhejiang, as well as in the Xinjiang region. Snowy Hydro Expanding Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Capacity (Int'l)

In the Land Down UNder, Cooma, NSW-based Snowy Hydro Limited reports its board has approved a final investment decision to proceed with the proposed Snowy 2.0 pumped-storage hydro expansion, subject to shareholder approval.

Snowy 2.0, a pumped-storage hydro expansion of the existing Snowy Scheme, will provide as much as 2,000 MW of on-demand electric power generation and 350,000 MWh of large-scale energy storage at an expected cost of $4.5 billion.

Intelligent Land Investments Group (ILI) is reporting plans to develop "Red John", a new 400-MW pumped hydro energy storage project in the Scottish Highlands using Loch Ness as the tail pond.

Aussie Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Study Funded (Int'l Report)

In Canberra, the Australian federal government government has announced $2 million of funding for an Origin Energy study into the proposed expansion of its Shoalhaven pumped hydro energy storage scheme, a project that could provide baseload power for up 80,000 homes.

The proposal, which would up the station's capacity from 240MW to 475MW should it go ahead, is to pump water from Lake Yarrunga to Fitzroy Falls Reservoir via a new underground pumped power station.
