New Jersey Clean Energy Startups Funding Announced (Funding)

In Trenton, the New Jersey Commission on Science, Innovation and Technology (CSIT) , through the Clean Tech Seed Grant Program which is funded by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), has announced funding to the following organizations to help accelerate development and innovation of clean technologies within New Jersey's economy. The following organizations were funded:

  • Andluca Technologies Inc., located in Princeton, is a spin-out of Princeton University that is developing solar-powered smart glass technology. ($74,969), www.andluca.com

  • Arbela Laboratories, located in Randolph, is creating a methanol-fed Pichia platform designed to increase the scale and reduce the costs of biomanufacturing. ($73,000), www. arbelalabs.com

  • Princeton Plan Aims for Carbon Neutrality by 2046 (Ind. Report)

    In New Jersey, Princeton University has released its Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions to Net Zero program to achieve carbon neutrality by 2046. The program calls for:

  • Building new construction to higher standards including LEED and Passive House standards:

  • Phasing out nonrenewable energy sources, including natural gas used today to produce steam heat and power;

  • Expand solar array installations and geo-exchange technology;

  • Tightening the energy efficiency of existing buildings;

  • Installing a new, more efficient hot water distribution system;

  • Building highly efficient heat pump facilities;

  • Increased use of renewable energy, and other energy efficient and climate friendly initiatives.

  • Princeton Adds Eight New Solar Arrays (Ind. Report)

    In the Garden State, the Princeton University Office of Sustainability is reporting the addition of 8 new solar arrays across the campus to "more than triple the University's current solar photovoltaic (PV) generating capacity" from 5.5 to 19 pct of current electric energy use. The total number of panels will also increase by more than 27,000, and the total photovoltaic capacity will rise from 4.5 to 16.5 MW.

    The new solar projects will be designed, built, and owned by EDF Renewables for 15 years through a PPA. After this period, the University has the option to purchase the installations at fair market value and manage them independently for a predicted 10-15 additional years, according to the release.     ExxonMobil, Princeton Renew Low-Emission Collaboration (Ind. Report)

    In New Jersey, the Princeton University Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment reports the renewal of a 5-year collaboration with Houston-headquartered oil giant ExxonMobil to research lower-emission technologies and energy solutions.

    The new, five-year agreement builds on ExxonMobil's participation in Princeton's E-filliates Partnership, a corporate membership program aimed at accelerating R&D and deployment of energy and environmental technologies through academia and industry partnerships.

    ExxonMobil is the world-leader in carbon capture, sequestering (CCS) more carbon in the last 20 years than any other company. Princeton is advancing this technology with new research to better understand how stored CO2 flows within rocks and interacts with minerals and improving the understanding of underground storage capacity, according to the Princeton release.

    Princeton researchers are also working to better understand the barriers, technology needs and opportunities of the global energy transition. This research is taking a comprehensive look at potential pathways to achieve net-zero emissions in the U.S. by 2050, and the investments in technology, infrastructure, and skill development to achieve that goal.

    Princeton Planning Zero GHG Emissions by 2046 (Ind. Report)

    In the Garden State, Princeton University is touting its new Sustainability Action Plan targeting GHG emissions reductions and the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2046.

    To that end, the 300 year old private Ivy League research university aims to cut campus greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2046 by eliminating fossil fuel combustion, expanding solar power generation on campus, converting from a natural gas-fueled campus steam system to a heating hot water system; energy-efficiency improvements; and investigating long-term fuel alternatives.

    The school also plans to reduce water usage; expand high-performance storm water management; increase sustainable transportation options; reduce waste and expand sustainable purchasing; design and develop responsibly; and improve natural ecosystems on campus.     Trump Considers Contentious Climate Committee Appointment (Opinions, Editorials & Asides)

    The Washington Post is reporting President Donald Trump may put climate-denying physicist William Happer at the head of the proposed Presidential Committee on Climate Securitywhich would evaluate whether climate change poses a national security threat.

    Happer is the Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at Princeton University, a veteran of the George H.W. Bush administration, is connected to fossil fuel companies including ExxonMobil, has acknowledged accepting payment for testimony from from Peabody Coal, and presently serves as Trump's deputy assistant for emerging technologies on the National Security Council.

    Happer is also known for his comment: "The demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler. Carbon dioxide is actually a benefit to the world, and so were the Jews." "There's no reason for climate hysteria. I don't think it's a problem at all, I think it's a good thing."
