Northland Power Closes on Spanish Renewables Portfolio (M&A)

Following up on oue 16th April coverage, Toronto-headquartered Canadian power producer Northland Power Inc. reports the completion of its €348 million ($408.7 million US) acquisition of a 551 MW portfolio of operational renewable energy assets in Spain from Madrid-based Helia Renovables FCR fund. Northland also assumed debt of €716 million in the deal.

The portfolio includes 33 operating assets totaling 435 MW of onshore wind, initially 424 MW, 66 MW of solar PV and 50 MW of concentrated solar power (CSP). Northland Power Acquires 540 MW Wind, Solar Portfolio (M&A)

In Toronto, Northland Power Inc. is reporting a definitive agreement with Madrid-based venture capital fund Helia Renovables, FCR for the acquisition of a 540-MW operating portfolio of onshore renewable projects in Spain.

The Portfolio includes 33 operating assets comprised of onshore wind (424 MW), solar PV (66 MW), and concentrated solar (50 MW) located throughout Spain. Total cash consideration to be paid for the Portfolio upon closing will be €345 million (Cdn. $520 million) together with the assumption of debt in the amount of €716 million (Cdn.$1,075 million). The acquisition is expected to close in Q3, 2021, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Northland Takes 49 pct Stake in Baltic Power Offshore Wind (M&A)

Toronto-based Northland Power Inc. is reporting an agreement with Poland-based PKN ORLEN S.A. to acquire a 49 pct interest -- subject to regulatory approvals -- in the 1,200 MW Baltic Power offshore wind project in the Baltic Sea. Northland expects to invest approximately $100 million in the project.

PKN ORLEN is the largest company in Central and Eastern Europe and is publicly listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The Company is part of the ORLEN Group, which has operations in Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Canada. PKN ORLEN is a major player on the Polish energy market, with generation capacity of 3.2 GWe.

The Northland -- PKN ORLEN partnership will co-develop the Baltic Power opportunity that is expected to secure a 25-year Contract for Difference (CfD) offtake agreement. Construction is slated to start in 2023 with commercial operations expected in 2026. Offshore Wind California Grows Membership (Ind. Report)

French offshore wind foundations specialist Naval Energies has joined Menlo Park-based Offshore Wind California, an international association of offshore wind developers and technology companies focused on the California market. The association supports a goal of 10 GW of installed offshore wind capacity in the Golden State a by 2040.

Offshore Wind California members include Aker Solutions, Avangrid Renewables, Equinor, Magellan Wind (which has a Joint Development Agreement with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners), Mainstream Renewable Power, Northland Power, Orsted, Principle Power, Pacific Ocean Energy Trust, and Smultea Sciences. Siemens Gamesa Expanding Taiwan Wind Turbine Facility (Int'l.)

Further to our 15 Nov. 2019 report, Madrid-based wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (SGRE) is reporting plans to expand its production capacity in Taiwan to deliver turbines for the Hai Long 2 wind farm with which it has a preferred supplier agreement.

The Hai Long offshore wind farm project is being developed by Toronto-based Northland Power Inc and Singapore's Yushan Energy Pte . SGRE is to supply wind turbines for the latter's 300 MW wind farm off the coast of Changhua County. Northland Power Acquires BC Offshore Wind Project (M&A, Ind Report)

Following up on our 23rd August, 2019 report, Toronto-headquartered renewable energy developer Northland Power reports it has agreed to acquire NaiKun Wind Energy Group's offshore wind development project in the Hecate Strait off the coast of British Columbia. The transaction will occur by way of NaiKun selling Northland a 100 pct interest in its wholly owned subsidiary, NaiKun Wind Development Inc.

The transaction, which is subject to regulatory and other approvals, is expected to close in mid-2020. Northland, Shizen JV Targets Japanese Offshore Wind (Int'l.)

Toronto-headquartered renewable energy developer Northland Power is reporting a 50/50 JV with Tokyo-based Shizen Energy to target 600MW of offshore wind capacity projects off Chiba prefecture in the south-east of Japan's main island. Specific projects and detailed plans have not been released.

Shizen has contributed to the development of about 1GW of renewable energy projects in Japan as well as solar PV projects in Brazil, Vietnam and Thailand. Northland has a net interest in more than 2GW of operational clean energy projects worldwide, including a 60 stake in the 1,044MW Hai Long offshore wind cluster under development in Taiwan. Siemens Gamesa Supplying Turbines for Taiwan Offshore Project (Int'l)

Madrid-based Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) and Hai Long Offshore Wind are reporting a preferred supplier agreement for the delivery and servicing of turbines on the 300 MW-Hai Long 2 project. The agreement is subject to contract and final investment decision from the consortium partners, Canadian independent power producer Northland Power Inc. and Taiwan-based developer Yushan Energy. Northland, Taipower Ink Taiwan Offshore Wind PPA (Int'l Report)

Toronto-headquartered Northland Power Inc is reporting a 20-year PPA with Taiwan state-owned electric utility Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) for the 300-MW Hai Long 2A wind project off Taiwan, the first of three schemes totaling 1,044 MW.

Under the PPA, Northland and its Singapore-based project partner Yushan Energy Co Ltd will sell the wind farm's output at a tariff of TWD 6.2795 ( $0.204) per kWh in the first 10 years and slightly less for the remaining period.

The Hai Long 2A scheme is the first of the three Hai Long projects securing a PPA. Contracts with Taipower for the Hai Long 2B and Hai Long 3, are slated for finalization later this year.
