Neste Expanding Singapore Biorefinery (Int'l. Report)

Finnish biofuel producer and oil refiner Neste reports it is investing €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion) to more than double output at its Singapore refinery. The facility produces renewable fuels from used cooking oil, vegetable oil, agricultural and animal wastes.

The Singapore expansion will reportedly increase renewable fuel output by up to 1.3 million tpy from the current 1 million tpy, The plant will also be able to produce up to 1 million tpy of renewable jet fuel as well as raw materials for various polymers and chemicals.

Neste, LyondellBasell Tout Joint Bioplastic Production (Ind. Report)

Rotterdam, Netherlands-based chemicals and plastics manufacturer LyondellBasell (LYB) and Helsinki-headquartered renewable diesel maker Neste have jointly announced the first parallel production of bio-based polypropylene and bio-based low-density polyethylene from sustainable bio-based raw materials at a commercial scale.

The joint project combined Neste's renewable feedstock and LyondellBasell's technical capabilities. LyondellBasell's cracker flexibility allowed it to introduce a new renewable feedstock at its Wesseling, Germany site, which was converted directly into bio-based polyethylene and bio-based polypropylene. Neste Touts Estonian Biodiesel Sales, MY Renewable Jet Fuel (Int'l)

In the capital city of Tallinn, Estonian public broadcaster ERR and other media are reporting Helsinki-headquartered renewable diesel fuel producer Neste will begin offering its palm oil biodiesel to Estonian motorists in July, subject to Estonian Environment Ministry approval.

In other Neste news, the effectiveness of Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel in reducing black carbon emissions has been recognized in a competition organized by the Climate Leadership Coalition, the Bioenergy Association of Finland, the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, the Finnish Environment Institute, and the Central Association of Chimney Sweeps. According to NASA, renewable fuel has the potential to cut particulate emissions by up to 70 pct from aircraft engines. Oakland Fleet Opts for Neste Renewable Diesel (Ind. Report)

In the Golden State, the City of Oakland and Helsinki-headquartered Neste report they are partnering to turn used restaurant cooking oils and residues into renewable diesel for use in the city's transport fleet.

According to a release, switching from petroleum diesel to renewable diesel reduces harmful emissions, reduces fuel costs and allows the city's oldest and most polluting vehicles to "go clean". The fuel is compatible with all diesel engines and cuts engine nitrogen oxides emissions by 9 pct, carbon monoxide emissions by 24 pct and fine particulate matter emissions by 33 pct. The switch to renewable diesel will also help the city fleet cut its greenhouse gas emissions by a total of 74 pct compared to fossil fuel-based diesel. Finnish Airports Switching to Neste MY Renewable Diesel (Int'l)

Basel, Switzerland-based Clariant reports it is partnering with Helsinki-headquartered sustainable diesel and renewable chemical specialist Neste and will use C2/C3 monomers derived from Neste's renewable hydrocarbons. The feedstock is manufactured from waste and residue raw materials including used cooking oil and renewable vegetable oils. The C2/C3 monomers will replace those currently used by Clariant to develop advanced polyolefin solutions in several applications.

Biofuels specialist Neste and aviation fuel supplier Air BP report they are partnering to scale up the fledgling supply chain for sustainable jet fuels made from waste-based feedstocks and will work together to introduce a co-branded sustainable aviation fuel to market at airports through Air BP's global network.

Neste's MY Renewable Jet Fuel has been used in thousands of commercial flights. Similarly, Air BP has supplied its BP Biojet product at 10 airports across the Nordic countries since 2014.

Geneva Airport Grounds Renewable Jet Fuel Project (Int'l Report)

Helsinki-headquartered renewable fuel producer Neste Oyj reports that due to funding shortfalls Geneva Airport has decided not to proceed with its September, 2017 plan to replace 1 pct of the conventional jet fuel used for aircraft with renewable jet fuel in a pilot project with Neste.

Neste also reports it will continue renewable jet fuel production as planned and volumes will increase year-on-year. With the company's planned additional 1 million ton renewable product capacity in Singapore, renewable jet fuel production is estimated to increase significantly by 2022.

Neste Investigating Waste Plastic as Alt. Fuel Feedstock (Int'l)

Helsinki-headquartered renewable fuel producer Neste Oyj reports it is exploring the use of liquefied waste plastic as a future raw material for fossil refining after a trial period in 2019. The company's target is to process more than one million tonnes of waste plastic by 2030.

According to Neste, only one-third of the 27 million tpy of post-consumer plastic waste generated in Europe is collected for recycling. In January 2018, the EU released its Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy. In the EU Waste package, recycling target for plastic packaging was raised to 50 pct by 2025 and 55 pct by 2030.

Neste Acquiring IH Demeter BV to Guarantee Feedstock (M&A, Int'l)

Helsinki, Finland-headquartered renewable diesel specialist Neste Oyj reports it will acquire sole control and a 51 pct stake in Dutch animal fats and proteins trader IH Demeter BV.

The terms of the deal, which is subject to regulatory approvals, were not divulged. The new entitiy will be tagged Neste Demeter BV.

The investment supports Neste's strategy to establish a global waste and residue raw material platform to secure feedstock -- raw material availability to meet its production needs, according to a statement.

Evry, France-based Global Bioenergies and an 11 member industrial consortium including Sekab, Neste Engineering Solutions, Repsol and SkyNRG are reporting receipt of EU funding to demonstrate the production of isobutene from softwood residue derivatives for use in gasoline and jetfuel. The 3-year, €19.7 million project received EU grant funding totaling €13.9 million, €5.7 million of which went to project coordinator Global Bioenergies

With an estimated forestry residues potential of about 145 million tpy, the European Union has the potential to support the deployment of hundreds of such biorefineries.

Global Bioenergies is one of the few companies worldwide, and the only one in Europe, that is developing a process to convert renewable resources into hydrocarbons through fermentation. Billionth Gallon of Neste MY Renewable Diesel Sold (Ind. Report)

In the Lone Star State, Houston-headquartered Neste U.S., Inc. is reporting the sale of its 1 billionth gallon of Neste MY Renewable Diesel sold in North America, effectively helping reduce more than 7 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. This is the equivalent of removing 1.6 million passenger vehicles from the road for one year, according to Neste.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel is a low-carbon diesel produced from 100 pct renewable and sustainable raw materials, such as waste animal and fish fat, vegetable oils and used cooking oil. It emits up to 80 percent less carbon when compared to petroleum diesel. Unlike biodiesel, Neste MY Renewable Diesel is a drop-in fuel that requires no blending and is compatible with all diesel engines. Neste Project Slashes Palm Oil Mill Methane Emissions (Int'l)

According to a Helsinki-headquartered Neste release, Neste has long been exploring ways to reduce greenhouse gas emission from palm oil production.

In 2015, the company initiated a two-year study project to verify the methane emission reduction for a newly applied effluent treatment method. The project, which was conducted by Meo Carbon Solutions in Indonesian palm oil mills in collaboration with Dutch palm oil company KLK. The project used a belt filter press to remove organic matter such as degrading parts of the oil palm fruit in the mill effluent, the source of the methane emissions. The Neste-lead project verified 50 pct reduction in methane emissions at palm oil mills, as validated by Neste.

In Indonesia and Malaysia, approximately 70 pct of palm oil is produced without methane reduction methods. If all the producers in these countries were to adopt the studied new method, greenhouse gases would be reduced by approximately 4.5 million tpy, better than the 50 pct greenhouse gas emission reduction requirement defined in the Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) for all biofuels, according to the Neste release. According to a Helsinki-headquartered Neste release, replacing fossil fuels with Neste's renewable fuels reduced global climate emissions altogether by 8.3 million metric tons or 8.3 billion KG in 2017 -- equivalent to removing 3 million passenger cars from the roads for a full year.

The emission reduction is calculated by comparing the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of the renewable fuels that Neste produces in a year to the life cycle emissions of the equivalent amount of conventional diesel. According to Helsinki-headquartered renewable fuels specialist maker Neste, replacing fossil fuels with Neste's renewable fuels reduced global climate emissions altogether by a staggering 8.3 million metric tons or 8.3 billion kilograms in 2017 -- the equivalent to removing 3 million passenger cars from the roads for a full year.

The amount of greenhouse gas emissions saved with Neste's renewable fuels, primarily Neste MY Renewable Diesel, increased by 1.6 million tons from 2016 thanks to increased production at Neste's renewable fuels refineries in Finland, the Netherlands, and Singapore.

Refined from waste and residue raw materials, such as meat processing wastes, used cooking oils, and residues from vegetable oil processing, Neste MY Renewable Diesel provides up to 80 percent reduction in carbon emissions. In the Golden State, Neste is reporting the Western Contra Costa Transit Authority (WestCAT) has switched their entire fleet of 45 heavy duty buses from operating on petroleum diesel to using only Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ a low-carbon drop-in fuel produced from 100 pct renewable and sustainable raw materials.

Finland Surrenders Control of Neste (Int'l Report)

Helsinki, Finland-headquartered renewable diesel specialist Neste Oil reports reports its principal and controlling shareholder, the Government of Finland, on Thursday effectively gave up control of oil refiner by donating some of its shares valued at €30 million (approx $60 million) to a charitable foundation. The donation reduced the state's Neste holding to 49.7 pct from 50.1 pct, according to a government statement.

Neste Selects Singapore for New Biofuel Plant (Int'l Report)

In Finland, Helsinki-headquartered Neste reports it has selected Singapore as the site for its planned new biofuel plant and will make a final investment decision by the end of 2018. Technical and design work is underway.

If the project proceeds, production would begin by 2022 and would extend capacity in the Singapore refinery by 1 million tonnes, Neste says. The additional capacity would be used for production of diesel, aviation fuel and raw materials for biochemical uses, all of them biofuels which can be made from feedstocks such as waste and animal fats.

Neste presently produces biofuels in Singapore and Rotterdam with a total production capacity of 2.6 million tonnes, and operates two conventional refineries in Finland. Neste, American Airlines Tout Renewable Fuels Collaboration (Int'l)

Renewable diesel specialist Neste Oil reports it has entered into an agreement with American Airlines to explore opportunities to further reduce the airline's environmental footprint through the use of Neste's renewable fuels. The joint effort aims to facilitate acceptance and commercialization of High Freeze Point HEFA (HFP-HEFA) renewable jet fuel which is currently under consideration for approval by ASTM International.

The aviation industry has set ambitious targets to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from air transportation, including carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and beyond, and a 50 pct reduction of net aviation CO2 emissions by 2050. Currently, sustainable renewable jet fuel offers the only viable alternative to fossil liquid fuels for powering commercial aircraft, according to Neste. Neste's Taking Action on Climate Change Forecasts Renewable Diesel, Bioplastics Growth -- Report Attached (Ind. Report)

Helsinki-headquartered Neste, the world's largest producer of renewable diesel refined from waste and residues,, has published a business environment outlook called Taking Action on Climate Change.

The Neste report discusses key changes taking place in the energy, transport and chemicals markets. As global commitment to tackle climate change requires major efforts to reduce emissions, the use of fossil raw materials will inevitably need to decline in all of these sectors.

Neste estimates approximately 10 pct of the global car fleet will be electric cars by 2013 and that renewable diesel will remain a competitive solution for reducing transport emissions. By 2021, renewable diesel demand is expected to have doubled in North America, the Nordic countries and Europe. The company also believes that the problem of emissions from diesel vehicles can be solved, and that diesel technology will remain competitive for a long time to come.

Neste is also developing new business operations from bioplastics, a market that is expected to grow by more than 40 pct by 2021. About 80 pct of this growth is expected to come from durable biobased plastics, such as Neste's bioplastics solution, the demand for which is growing faster than for biodegradable plastics. Neste also expects 20 pct of its renewable business sales volume to come from from renewable jet fuel, renewable chemicals and bio-based plastics, according to a company release.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel Reduces Particulate Emissions (Int'l)

In Finland, Neste is reporting a study lead by Tampere University of Technology has found that the use of pure Neste MY Renewable Diesel in working machines efficiently reduces particulate matter emissions on average by 35 pct and as high as 60 pct.

The study measured the local exhaust pipe emissions of working machines from two size categories, operating in an environment simulating real-life working conditions. The tests covered, for example, loading and driving of the working machine both with and without load. The results were derived from a comparison between the use of pure Neste MY Renewable Diesel and conventional fossil diesel meeting European EN 590 diesel fuel standard specifications and consisting of 7 percent of conventional biodiesel, in line with the maximum limit specified by the standard. Neste Touts MY Renewable Diesel for Cutting Emissions (Ind. Report)

Neste is reporting that is recently launched Neste MY Renewable Diesel, produced 100 pct from waste and residues, has helped Finnish consumers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1.5 million kg -- equivalent to the emissions caused by 560 round-the-world charter flights for one person, according to a Neste.

The production of Neste MY Renewable Diesel is based on Neste's proprietary NEXBTL technology, which serves to produce high-quality renewable diesel and other renewable products from nearly any waste fat or vegetable oil. Compared to conventional fossil diesel, Neste MY Renewable Diesel has up to 90 pct lower greenhouse gas emissions during the lifecycle of the fuel. Neste MY Renewable Diesel is fully compatible with current diesel grades and can be added to the fuel tank at any point. Neste Welcomes Sweden's Biofuels, Emissions Standards (Int'l)

In a recent release, Oslo-headquartered renewable diesel producer Neste says it welcomes the Swedish government's draft law proposals for the emission reduction mandate for traffic fuels and the continued tax exemption for high-blend biofuels. Long-term perspective and ambitious targets provide a much needed basis for innovation and investments in the biofuels sector, while ensuring the necessary carbon emission reductions in transportation.

"Sweden is showing worldwide leadership with its ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions from its transport sector by 70 pct by 2030. A growing Nordic market for biofuels is emerging, as also Norway and Finland have recently set very high biofuel targets. The large resources of forest-based raw materials in these countries are expected to play a big role in reaching these targets," said Kaisa Hietala, Exec. VP of Neste's Renewable Products business.

Neste Posts Operating Profits, Considering Expansion (Int'l)

In Helsinki, Finnish state-controlled refiner and renewable diesel producer Neste is reporting an increase in operating profits, up from &europ;983 million ($1.05 billion) from €925 million.

According to a statement, 48 pct of the company's profits in 2016 came from renewable diesel production and the company is looking to increase its biofuels production and investments the U.S. and Singapore. Renewable diesel producer Neste and Bioenergy La Tuque have started R&D cooperation with the objective of studying the potential of using forest residues as a raw material in biofuel production in La Tuque, Canada. The cooperation supports Neste's goals to expand the raw material selection available and increase the use of waste and residues.

The agreement focuses on the technological and economical feasibility of the project and will assess the biomass availability at a competitive cost, identify technology bottlenecks in process lines, and validate the acceptable level of risk.

January 3, 2017 Finnish renewable diesel producer Neste reports it has inked an agreement for the purchase of Electrawinds ReFuel B.V.'s shuttered FAME biodiesel plant in Sluiskil in the Netherlands. The purchase price has not been revealed. The deal is expected to be completed prior to 1 April.

Hamburg Airport Fleet Fueled with Neste's Renewable Diesel (Int'l)

Finnish oil refiner and renewable fuels developer Neste Oil reports the the Hamburg airport in Germany is now using Neste's "drop in" renewable diesel fuel in its dieesel-powered ground vehicle fleet. The move away from fossil fuels is part of the airport's initiative to cut its carbon emissions and lower its carbon footprint. Hamburg Airport the first major international airport in the world to replace all fossil fuels with renewables in its ground fleet.

Neste reports that its Head of Aviation Regulation, Henrik Erametsa, has been appointed Co-Chair of the EU European Advanced Biofuels Flightpath Initiative. In the initiative, Neste will represent the biofuels industry and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will speak for the air carriers. Neste Oil to Sell Retail Renewable Diesel in Finland (Int'l)

Finnish oil refiner and renewable fuels developer Neste Oil reports it will begin selling diesel produced entirely from renewable wastes, residues and raw materials at selected stations in Finland before the year end.

According to the company, "We will be the first in Finland to launch diesel produced entirely from renewable raw materials, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 pct compared to conventional diesel."

Neste's proprietary NExBTL technology makes it possible to produce renewable diesel and other renewable products out of waste and residue materials and vegetable oils.
