India Planning 5,000 Compressed Biogas Plants by 2023 (Int'l)

In the sub-continent, the Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry is reporting the planned construction of 5,000 compressed biogas-from-agricultural waste and municipal solid wastes (MSW) plants nationwide by 2023. The proposed facilities will have an estimated CBG production of 15 million tpy. The initiative is intended to boost the availability of affordable transport fuels, to better use agricultural residue, and provide additional revenue for farmers. The initiative would also increase the share of natural gas in India's energy mix from present 6-7 pct to 15 pct by the year 2022. Omani Researchers Convert Wastepaper into Biofuel (New Prod & Tech)

In Oman, municipal solid wastes (MSW) consisting primarily of wood, waste paper, food materials, plastics, metals and glass are being investigated by Dr Sivakumar Nallusamy, assistant professor at the Department of Biology, Sultan Qaboos University, as an ideal cellulosic-organic waste as a substrate for bacterial fermentation for the growth of microorganisms used for the production of biodiesel, bioethanol, bioplastics and other valuable products.

The project, which is receiving grant funding from the Research Council, is converting pre-treated waste papers and other municipal solid wastes into fermentable sugars by enzymatic hydrolysis. The sugars were successfully converted into bioplastic, bioethanol and biodiesel using appropriate microorganisms. Meridian Awarded $3Mn for Lignin Conversion Tech R&D (Funding)

Atlanta-based Meridian Waste Solutions, Inc., an integrated, non-hazardous solid waste services and innovative technology company, is reporting receipt of $3 million in grant funding from the USDA to support the commercialization of patented and patent-pending lignin conversion and refining technologies owned by Meridian's subsidiary, Attis Innovations, Inc. -- the combination of recent transactions with American Science and Technology Corp. and Advanced Lignin Biocomposites LLC.

The U.S. DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office has consequently identified the need for technologies to be developed for the efficient use of lignin as a key target for accelerating the growth of the U.S. bioeconomy.

To address this challenge, a team comprising Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of Tennessee's Center for Renewable Carbon, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the Natural Resource Research Institute, Long Trail Sustainability, and Attis' research and development unit, American Science and Technology Corporation, presented the U.S. Department of Agriculture with a pathway based on Attis' technology to allow biorefineries to compete with petroleum. That pathway relies on Attis' patented and patent-pending AST-Organosolv process to fractionate biomass into cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, followed by the conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose into biofuel (butanol), and the conversion of lignin into acrylonitrile-butadiene-lignin (ABL Resin) using technology developed and patented by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and licensed to Attis.
