Maersk Inks First Green Methanol Marine Fuel Deal (Int'l. Report)

Maritime shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk) is reporting a contract with Copenhagen-based REintegrate to produce roughly 10,000 tonnes of carbon neutral e-methanol, produced by using renewable sources such as biomass and solar energy which the vessel will need to operate each year.The entire Maersk fleet would require roughly 20 million tpy of green methanol fuel, according to the release.

REintegrate's new decentralized production technology offers green e-methanol identical to fossil methanol, from renewable energy sources and CO2 from bio-waste. E-methanol provides a convenient transition to environmentally friendly fuels and chemicals with an ultra-high greenhouse gas reduction and a competitive rice to similar products such as green bio-products.REintegrate's process facilitates the re-cycle of CO2 emissions and the by-products (oxygen and heat) can be used in the industrial sector and for district heating, according to the company website.

With about 90 per cent of world trade transported by sea, global shipping accounts for nearly three per cent of the world's CO2 emissions. World's Largest "Green" Hydrogen Project Underway (Int'l. Report)

The world's largest green hydrogen project has formally kicked off in Denmark. The project is being led by Copenhagen Airport; shipping giant A.P.Moller-Maersk; transport and logistics company DSV Panalpina; shipping and logistics firm DFDS; airline SAS and Danish energy company Orsted, the City of Copenhagen with technical and management support from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Denmark-based international engineering, environmental science and economics consultants COWI.

The project will establish a 1.3 GW electrolysis facility in the Greater Copenhagen area capable of generating hydrogen from water in a process that will be powered entirely with offshore wind power. The 'green' hydrogen generated by the project can be used as fuel for heavy road vehicles and/or converted into e-methanol for maritime shipping and e-kerosene for aviation fuel.

At full capacity, the new Danish facility could reportedly reduce carbon emissions from transport by 850,000 tonnes, charting the course for green agenda leading European countries to meet the 2050 net zero emissions target. Danish Partnership to Produce Sustainable Fuels (Int'l. Report)

Denmark's Moller-Maersk , Orsted, DSV Panalpina, DFDS, Copenhagen Airports, and SAS are reporting partnering for the production of green hydrogen and e-fuel sustainable fuels for land, maritime and air transportation in and around the Copenhagen area.

A proposed facility is slated to be operational by 2023 and at full capacity of 250,000 metric tpy of fuel by 2030. A feasibility study has been launched and if viability is confirmed, the final investment decision to produce sustainable fuels in the first stage of the project should get underway in 2021. Ammonia Examined as Maritime Alternative Fuel (Ind. Report)

In an initiative aimed at reducing maritime shipping emissions and identifying an alternative to currently used heavy oil "bunkering" fuel, London-headquartered Lloyd's Register, Samsung Heavy Industries, MISC, and MAN Energy Solutions in January launched an ammonia-fueled tanker project to examine the use of ammonia as an alternative maritime fuel. Following a study with A.P. Moller-Maersk, Lloyd's Register has determined the best (marine) fuels for achieving zero net emissions are alcohol, biomethane and ammonia.

Lloyd's Register Group Limited is a technical and business services organization and a maritime classification society, wholly owned by the Lloyd's Register Foundation, a UK charity dedicated to research and education in science and engineering.
