Meyer Burger Opens German Solar Module Production Line (Int'l.)

Swiss-headquartered module maker Meyer Burger reports the opening of its first new manufacturing facility in Thalheim, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany, with a second plant slated to open in Frieberg before the month end.

The Thalheim, Bitterfeld-Wolfen has a 400 MW capacity that the company says will be ramped up to 5GW by 2026 and will produce roughly 200,000 solar cells each day.

As previously reported, Meyer Burger aims to increase its production capacity to 1.4GW by 2023, and has been awarded €22.5 million in regional German government grants to support construction of a HJ PV cell production plant in the country. Meyer Burger Scores €22.5Mn Grant for Solar Cell Plant (Int'l.)

Switzerland-based PV manufacturing equipment supplier and solar technology specialist Meyer Burger Technology Ltd reports the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the Federal Republic of Germany are pledging up to €15 million in environmental protection aid for the establishment of heterojunction (HJT) solar cell production in the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen. An additional €7.5 million public investment grant for construction of the facility was also committed .

The funds support the significant environmental advantages Meyer Burger's heterojunction technology (HJT) for solar cell production , compared to conventional manufacturing processes. The company notes the establishment of the HJT production lines and the sales organization are progressing as planned and production is expected to start in Q2, this year. Switzerland-based PV manufacturing equipment supplier Meyer Burger Technology Ltd. is reporting discontinuance of production at its plant in Zulpich, Germany by mid-2020. In the future, the systems for optical measuring and testing technologies for industrial manufacturing sold under the Hennecke brand will be produced entirely and sold at at Meyer Burger's largest site in Hohenstein-Ernstthal. REC Group, Meyer Burger Plan Strategic Solar Collaboration (Int'l)

Norway-headquartered global solar energy specialist REC Group reports it has inked a memorandum of understanding for the extension of an existing strategic collaboration with the Swiss technology leader Meyer Burger.

The firms will collaborate on REC Group's cutting-edge REC Alpha Series Datasheet. REC intends to increase Alpha Series' 600MW heterojunction technology (HJT) and SmartWire Connection Technology (SWCT™) production capacity using equipment from Meyer Burger. REC is actively seeking potential partners for the expansion.

Meyer Burger Offloads Wafering Business for $49Mn (Int'l, M&A)

Switzerland-based PV manufacturing equipment supplier Meyer Burger is reporting the sale of its photovoltaic, semiconductor and sapphire wafering business to Rendsburg, Germany-headquartered Precision Surfacing Solutions (PPS) for $49.8 million in cash. The deal is slated to close towards the end of Q1, 2019.

PPS will retain around 70 employees involved in the wafering technology portfolio at the thun facility which Meyer Burger will rent to PPS on a long term basis.
