Jamaica Launches Renewables, Energy Conservation Effort (Int'l)

In Kingston, the Jamaican government reports it is launching the Deployment of Renewable Energy and Improvement of Energy Efficiency in the Public Sector Project. The 3-year renewable energy project aims to cut public sector energy costs by increasing energy conservation and expanding Jamaica's renewable energy sector.

The $12,003,741 project is being funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Trust Fund and the the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing the initiative through partnership with the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ).

Although Jamaica is 90 pct dependent on fossil fuels for its energy needs, the country's National Energy calls for over 20 pct of the island's overall energy mix to come from renewable sources by 2030. (Source: Jamaica Information Service, 8 Dec., 2016)
