Iberdrola reports it has raised its stake to 52.75 pct and taken control of Sydney, NSW, Australia-based Infigen Energy.

Infigen's onshore wind generation facilities total 670 MW, 268 MW of conventional generation assets and backup energy storage, 246 MW of acquired third-party renewable generation capacity as well as a portfolio of projects at different stages of development for a total capacity greater than 1 gigawatt (GW). In the Land Down Under, the South Australian Government has introduced a AU$50 million Grid Scale Storage Fund (GSSF) aimed at accelerating the deployment of new large-scale energy storage projects, including pumped hydro, hydrogen, gas storage, solar thermal, bioenergy and battery storage.

Potential projects seeking funding will be assessed by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). Projects shortlisted for GSSF funding may also be eligible for ARENA funding under the Advancing Renewables Program . Under the GSSF, applicants must be able to match funding dollar-for-dollar and preference will be given to projects targeting financial close by the end of 2019.

ARENA is already supporting feasibility studies for two prospective pumped hydro plants at Cultana and Middleback Ranges, two virtual power plants trials and has contributed towards two grid-scale batteries -- Infigen's Lake Bonney battery and the ESCRI battery in Dalrymple. In the Land Down Under, Infigen Energy reports its 278.5MW Lake Bonney wind facility will install a 25MW Tesla grid-scale battery energy storage system in South Australia. According to Infigen Energy, the energy storage capacity will play a crucial role in stabilizing the surrounding region's grid with its flexibility services.

Infigen has secured project funding agreements with the South Australian government and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) worth around $38 (AUS) million. South Australia is home to the world's largest battery -- a 100MW system at the Hornsdale wind farm. In the Land Down Under, Infigen Energy reports it has generated its first power from its 113.2-MW Bodangora Wind Farm Near the city of Wellington, in New South Wales and delivered the electricity to the national wholesale market. The company is expecting additional turbines to be installed and commissioned machines to be commissioned within the next few weeks.

The Bodangora project will incorporate 33 General Electric 3.43-MW turbines totaling approximately 361 GWh per year. The project also has a long-term maintenance and service contract with GE.

The project is being built by GE and Australian builder Civil & Allied Technical Construction (CATCON). When fully operational, the wind farm will generate sufficient power for as many as 49,000 households each year.
