Ideol Claims FloatGen Floating Wind Pilot Progress (Int'l. Report)
FloatGen
Date: 2020-03-13
Following up on our October 18, 2017 coverage, Paris-headquartered offshore wind developer Ideol reports its FloatGen floating wind pilot in the French Atlantic Ocean has outreached production levels reaching more than 920MWh of output for the month of February.

The 2MW unit, based around a Vestas turbine and damping pool foundation also saw its highest-ever monthly capacity factor, 66.3 pct -- significantly better than the average bottom-fixed offshore machine, which averages around 50 pct, according to a company release. NATSO Urging Biodiesel Tax Credit Extension (Opinions & Editorials)
NATSO
Date: 2019-11-08
NATSO, the trade association of America's travel plaza and truckstop industry, issued the following statement with regard to a letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA), urging Democratic leadership to support extending the biodiesel tax credit and other clean energy tax extenders:

"This letter is an extraordinary showing of support for the biodiesel tax credit and other clean energy tax policies. What is especially significant is the ideological and geographic diversity of the Democrats who signed this letter. Many of them have very difficult re-election campaigns ahead of them next year. The fact that lawmakers representing places such as Oklahoma City, Upstate New York, Salt Lake City, and Southern California -- areas far from the farming Midwest -- strongly support biofuels incentives underscores the economic and environmental benefits that these clean energy tax extenders bring to their communities. NATSO is grateful to Representatives Abby Finkenauer and Kendra Horn for their continued leadership on this important issue." CEA Reports Falling Empire State Emissions (Ind. Report)
Consumer Energy Alliance
Date: 2019-10-16
The Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) recently released analysis of U.S. government emissions data that looks at key pollutants and the overall environmental improvements seen across New York, shows that statewide emissions have fallen by as much as 95 pct since 1990 even as the state’s energy demand remained strong and natural gas usage surged.

The analysis demonstrates to policy leaders and anti-development activists that the state's hastily passed Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) can ensure energy production and sound environmental stewardship at the same time. This policy plan came as New York had a marked increase in consumption from 2017 to 2018 in both residential and commercial end-users. These facts show, despite ideologically driven attempts to shame energy development, many of the emissions reductions are the fruit of ongoing innovation, technology and the increased use of natural gas and nuclear energy in the Empire State's energy mix.

CEA's analysis found that from 1990 to 2017, New York's emissions of key pollutants have decreased across the board, with a: 73 pct reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx); 95 pct reduction in sulfur dioxide (SO2);13 pct reduction in volatile organic compounds (VOCs); and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions declined by 22 pct. The CEA analysis notes these reductions and improvements occurred while more than 78 pct of the state's energy needs were being fueled by oil and natural gas.

This analysis follows CEA's Energy Savings Report for New York consumers, which found that families, small business and manufacturers across the state saved almost $30.9 billion thanks to low-cost energy over the past decade. This is essential for New York as one of the top five energy consuming states in the nation, where one in four households heat with oil and 40 pct of the state's electricity generation is powered by natural gas. Shizen Energy, Ideol Collaborating on Floating Offshore Wind (Int'l)
Shizen Energy,Ideol
Date: 2019-07-01
Japanese solar power company Shizen Energy reports it is expanding its renewable energy activity and, to that end, has inked an agreement with French offshore wind developer Ideol to collaborate on a floating wind farm off the coast of Japan.

Historically, Shizen Energy focused on solar energy and helped develop about 800 MW of renewable power across Japan.

Ideol is a global leader and pure player in floating foundations for offshore wind and has been engineering and accompanying floating offshore wind projects from conception to installation since 2010, according to the company website. Washington Post Asks "Can the Green New Deal Make it Through Congress? (Opinions, Editorials & Asides)
Green New Deal
Date: 2019-02-22
As previously reported, the ambitious 10-year Green New Deal proposal recently released by freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Mass. Sen. Edward J. Markey (D) calls for an economy-wide effort to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change. The non-binding proposal basically combines big climate-change-related ideas with a wish list of progressive economic proposals that, taken together, would touch nearly every American and overhaul the economy.

On 21 Feb, the Washington Post asked "Can the Green New Deal make it through Congress? -- "Passing a climate policy in the United States to combat climate change has long been politically challenging because it is opposed by powerful, well-financed groups such as fossil-fuel companies, electric utilities and automakers, research shows, and these groups have driven ideological polarization on climate policy. In a paper, my co-authors and I (Leah Stokes) show that congressional offices that meet with and receive funds from fossil-fuel organizations are more likely to believe the public does not want action on climate change.

"Congress has not passed a climate bill in a decade. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) last shepherded a cap-and-trade bill, aimed at reducing carbon emissions, through the House in 2009. That bill failed in the Senate after protracted negotiations with fossil-fuel industries.

"Despite successes in some states in the early 2000s, sub-national climate policy also has stalled. In Washington state, for example, the public voted down a ballot initiative in November that would have imposed a small tax on carbon pollution." -- The Washington Post

Brazilian Foreign Minister Parrots Trump's Climate Change Lead (Opinions, Editorials & Asides)

Date: 2018-11-19
In the heart of the Amazon, Brazil's freshman foreign minister Ernesto Araujo has declared that "climate change is a Marxist tactic to instill fear, stifle the economic growth of western countries, and benefit China."

Writing on his blog, Araujo described climate science as a "dogma" that ignores "evidence" showing the opposite of rising temperatures and greater concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere.

"The left has sequestered the environmental cause and perverted it to the point of paroxysm over the last 20 years with the ideology of climate change. The climate [scientists] gathered some data suggesting a correlation between rising temperatures with increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, ignored data suggesting the opposite, and created a scientific dogma that no one else can contest on pain of being excommunicated from good society.", the new foreign minister's blog contends.

Araujo's blog parrots U.S, President Donald Trump adding, "This dogma has served to justify an increase in the regulatory power of states over the economy and power of international institutions over national states and their populations, as well as to stifle economic growth in democratic capitalist countries and foster China's growth."

Pres. Donald Trump, who recently raked the U.S. Forest Service over the coals for not adequately raking leafs to prevent forest fires, will perhaps be best remembered for calling climate change a "hoax" and a "con-job created by the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive." Notable Quote
Progressive Policy Institute

" (Republican Senator John) McCain's advocacy of carbon pricing played a key role in getting mainstream Republican economists, at least, to admit it was the most efficient climate policy. Unfortunately, the rabid anti-tax ideology of Grover Norquist has won out, leading most in the GOP to deny the climate problem rather admit that taxing carbon is the best solution." -- Paul Bledsoe, Energy Fellow and Strategic Adviser, Progressive Policy Institute, commenting on recently deceased Arizona Senator John McCain's position on carbon taxes and climate change. www.progressivepolicy.org
