GreenSpur's New Offshore Wind Generator Set for Testing (Int'l)
GreenSpur, ORE Catapult
Date: 2019-06-19
In the UK, Essex-based GreenSpur Renewables is touting what it claims is the world's largest ferrite-based direct drive permanent magnet generator (DD-PMG) for offshore wind turbines. The new unit, which the company says produces 250kW without the need for large quantities of rare earth magnets, is now at Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult in Blyth for several months of system testing.

Replacing scarce £40 per kg rare earth magnets with cheap and abundant ferrite magnets at £1 per kg is expected to deliver a generator CAPEX saving of about 33 pct. The modular design allows the new generators to be constructed in stages and stacked for additional cost savings.
