UC Berkeley Claims "Greenest Academic Building" (Ind. Report)

The University of California, Berkeley reports it's Haas School of Business Chou Hall has received both US Green Building Council LEED Platinum certification and TRUE Zero Waste certification from Green Business Certification Inc., making it the "greenest academic building in the nation."

The TRUE Platinum Zero Waste certification is a result of efforts to divert more 90 pct of Chou's landfill waste. TRUE Zero Waste certification levels include Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. To achieve TRUE Platinum, the team earned 69 out of the 70 credits ranging from: composting food scraps, tracking the purchase of environmentally preferred products, providing employees with access to zero-waste training, and reducing the use of hazardous waste chemicals. Cox Phoenix Facility Wins Green Business Certification (Ind. Report)

Atlanta-headquartered Cox Communications reports that its area fulfillment center (AFC) in Phoenix has scored Gold level under the Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) certification system for waste reduction efforts.

Administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), TRUE helps facilities define, pursue and achieve zero waste goals while becoming more resource and energy efficient. The program aims to change the way materials flow through society so that all products are reused and diverted from landfill, incineration (waste-to-energy) and the environment. TRUE provides best practices and training that helps businesses, property managers, schools, government agencies and nonprofits rethink how resources are used.

Cox Conserves is Cox Enterprises' national sustainability program focused on reducing waste and energy consumption, as well as conserving water. The program engages each of the company's major subsidiaries -- Cox Communications, Cox Automotive and Cox Media Group -- and encourages eco-friendly practices. The company's sustainability goals are to send zero waste to landfill by 2024 and become carbon and water neutral by 2044.

DEWA, GBCI Ink Dubai Green Building, Energy Efficiency MoU (Int'l)

In the UAE, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) reports it has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Washington, DC-headquartered Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), an independent organization that recognizes excellence in green business industry performance and practice in 160 countries.

Under the MoU, the two organizations will collaborate on building energy efficiency and related issues using the US Green Building Council's LEED Platinum certification standards and programs.

The MoU supports DEWA's efforts to achieve the Demand Side Management Strategy to reduce electricity and water use by 30 pct by 2030, and the Carbon Abatement Strategy to cut carbon emissions by 16 pct by 2021. CnGBC, GBCI Announce GBCI Canada Launch (Ind. Report)

Further to our August 30, 2017 coverage, Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) and the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) confirm they have joined forces and launched GBCI Canada to accelerate the green building market in Canada -- the second largest market for LEED in the world. GBCI Canada enables the Canadian "green" building and energy efficiency industry to leverage new opportunities to validate enhanced building performance and increase operational savings.

GBCI Canada exclusively administers project certifications within the LEED green building rating systems, as well as the WELL Building Standard, the Sustainable SITES Initiative (SITES) for land use, Parksmart for parking structures, TRUE Zero Waste, Investor Confidence Project (ICP) for energy efficiency retrofits, and the GRESB benchmark, which is used by institutional investors to improve the sustainability performance of the global property sector.

The new venture is expected to result in additional GBCI programs that will help the Canadian market realize the economic and environmental benefits associated with green building, according to CaGBC. IWBI Releases WELL Building Guide (Ind. Report)

In the Big Apple, the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI), a public benefit corporation, is reporting the release of its Manufacturer's Guide to WELL™ guide. The guide aims to help manufacturers who produce sustainable building products and materials navigate the WELL Building Standard (WELL) focused on setting design and policy protocols and performance thresholds that buildings and communities should strive to achieve to improve the health of the occupants of those spaces.

Since its 2014 launch, more than 125 million square feet in 31 countries are WELL Registered or Certified, across various building types, including both new construction and existing buildings. The work is being led by more than 2,000 independent WELL APs worldwide.

The WELL Building Standard and the WELL Community Standard are administered by the International WELL Building Institute and third-party certified by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). CaGBC Launching Green Building Standards Organization (Ind. Report)

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) reports it has created a joint venture with Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) to create Green Business Certification Inc. Canada, a new organization that will focus solely on project certification and professional credentialing of green buildings and businesses. New standards and certifications that GBCI Canada will oversee include a zero-carbon building standard which will be introduced in September.

The new program will be in charge of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building rating system for improving the efficiency of water and energy use in buildings. LEED certification was previously offered through CaGBC. Savona, Italy Registers First LEED for Cities Program (Int'l)

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the organization that certifies all USGBC LEED projects globally, reports that the city of Savona, Italy, ( pop. 62,000 ) is the first city in Europe registering for the LEED for Cities Program.

LEED for Cities combines sustainability, social equity and human experience with technology and analytics and is based on LEED -- the world's most widely used program for green buildings and communities.

LEED for Cities provides cities with a framework for measuring and managing the performance of water consumption, energy use, waste and transportation. LEED for Cities is administered through GBCI's Arc performance platform.

GBCI is the only certification and credentialing body within the green business and sustainability industry to exclusively administer project certifications and professional credentials for LEED, EDGE, PEER, WELL, SITES, GRESB, Investor Confidence Project (ICP), Parksmart and Zero Waste. GBCI's expansion into Europe will help facilitate the growth and advocacy of LEED, and GBCI's other sustainability programs in the European region. GBCI Canada Green Building Resource Launched (Ind. Report)

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and U.S.-headquartered Green Business Certification Inc. are reporting a new JV to be known as Green Business Certification Inc. Canada (GBCI Canada). GBCI Canada will deliver enhanced services, credentialing, certification and verification for green business programs and tools such as LEED v4, WELL, SITES, PEER, Parksmart, Zero Waste and GRESB in Canada.

GBCI Canada is expected to begin delivering LEED v4 and all other GBCI rating systems via LEED Online and Arc during early 2018. It will use Canadian staff for support.

On Monday, CaGBC announced the Zero Carbon Building Standard for Canada and will continue to deliver and support this program, which aims to both eliminate carbon from buildings and promote the creation of more renewable energy in these structures. USGBC, Seoul Agree to Advance LEED Green Buildings (Int'l)

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Seoul Metropolitan Government are reporting an agreement to accelerate the LEED green building rating system in the the city of Seoul (pop. 10,000,000 +-). The intent is to lay the groundwork for the city's sustainable development and building energy efficiency and performance as a way to help mitigate climate change. South Korea currently boasts more than 6.5 million gross square meters of LEED certified space.
