Pittsburgh Launches High Performance Building Center (Ind. Report)
Green Building Alliance
Date: 2019-09-30
The Green Building Alliance (GBA)T and the UN Economic Council on Europe (UNECE) are reporting an agreement to establish the city of Pittsburgh's International Center of Excellence on High Performance Buildings.

The center will focus on making improvements to the built environment through UNECE's Framework Guidelines for Energy Efficiency Standards in Buildings. It will work with global sustainability experts to identify and employ best practices for sustainable building design, construction and policy, and will conduct training programs for architects, engineers, planners and contractors on sustainable design and construction. The center will also provide technical and innovation assistance, and advocate for changes in local and state policies such as building codes, zoning incentives and energy regulations.

Pittsburgh is the second city in the world to participate in the program, following New York's Building Energy Exchange. Pittsburgh Environmental Center Wins Living Building Certification (Ind. Report)
Frick Environmental Center,Green Building Alliance,USGBC
Date: 2018-05-18
In the Keystone State, Pittsburgh's Frick Environmental Center (FEC) educational center reports it has been awarded Living Building Certification from the Seattle-based Living Future Institute. A project of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and the City of Pittsburgh, the FEC is the first municipally-owned building in the U.S. to achieve this designation, according to the project's architect Bohlin Cywinski Jackson..

Completed in 2016, the 16,000-sf FEC facility is one of 21 buildings worldwide to score Living Building certification, and only the second in Pennsylvania. FEC is one of the first to meet Building Challenge designation under v2.1, which requires a building to produce as much energy as it consumes annually, eliminate toxic and harmful chemicals, and collect and treat its own water.

A net-zero building, the FEC incorporates solar and geothermal energy to use 40 pct less energy compared to buildings of the same size in the same region. The center is also US Green Building Council LEED Platinum certified for energy efficiency and is a recipient of the Green Building Alliance Wood Design Award from WoodWorks, and an Education Facility Design Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
