Samsung, DNV to Develop Offshore Wind Stabilizers (Ind. Report)

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co reports it and DNV GL, a Norwegian ship quality assurance company, will work together to develop remotely controlled "floaters" to stabilize offshore wind turbines.

According to the Brussels-based Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), output of offshore floating wind farms is estimated to globally rise from 11 mw in 2019 to 2,000 mw in 2030. Wind World's Third-Largest Renewable Energy Employer (Int'l.)

In Abu Dhabi, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is reporting wind energy was the third-largest renewable energy employer in 2019 -- accounting for 1.17 million jobs worldwide.

Almost 23,000 wind turbines were installed in 2019. The Chinese market has been (and remains) almost entirely supplied by domestic companies, which account for around 510,000 jobs or 44 pct of the global number. European countries where wind giants Vestas and Siemens Gamesa alone account for one-third of global turbine production dominate the rest of global production, with 127,000 jobs.

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) estimates that 344 GW of new offshore and offshore wind power capacity may be installed globally. New installations could potentially create an addition 2.4 million job-years, up from 395,000 job-years created in 2020 to 542,000 in 2024. Offshore Wind Notable Quote from GWEC

The world market for offshore wind farm energy has jumped by 24 pct every year since 2013. 29.1 GW are generated in the world and the forecast is that in 2030 we will achieve 234 GW offshore wind turbines, according to the GWEC.

China Powering Global Offshore Wind Energy Growth (Int'l Report)

According a new industry report from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), the world's offshore wind farm capacity could grow to 234GW by 2030 powered by a clean energy surge led by China where 2.4 GW of offshore wind power capacity came on stream in 2019.

The report also noted 75 pct of the world's offshore wind farms are in European waters but by the end of the decade China is expected to host more than a fifth of the world's offshore wind turbines, equating to 52GW.

The report notes the offshore wind industry could create 900,000 jobs globally over the next decade and that every 1GW of offshore wind helped to avoid 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere . Jordan Among MENA Region Leading Wind Power Producers (Int'l.)

In its annual report, the Brussels-based Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) ranked third after Egypt and Morocco in the MENA -- Middle East and North Africa -- region in terms of wind energy production during the year 2019.

Jordan's total wind energy production amounted to 190 MW of the MENA countries 262 MW total wind power production capacity.

The report notes that the MENA countries of the installed a total of 894 MW of wind energy in 2019, down 7 pct compared to 2018, during which 962 MW was installed. Total installed wind farm capacity in the MENA region is now over 6 GW. Americas 2019 Wind Installations Hit 13.4GW (Ind. Report)

The Brussels-based Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) is reporting North, Central and South America and the Caribbean installed 13,427MW capacity of onshore wind power in 2019, an increase of 12 pct on the previous year which saw 11,892MW installed.

In North America (Canada and USA), new capacity additions grew by nearly 18 pct compared to 2018. In Central and South America and the Caribbean, new capacity additions decreased by 5 pct compared to 2018. Overall, this means that the region has tripled its wind power installations since 2010, Other GWEC findings include:

  • Leading countries in the region for 2019 include: US (9,143W), Mexico (1,284MW), Argentina (931 MW), and Brazil (745MW)

  • The US installed its third largest volume of onshore wind in 2019 at 9GW, just behind its previous records of 10GW in 2009 and 13GW in 2012, reaching a total of over 105 GW.

  • The offshore market in the US is progressing, with first large-scale installations expected in 2022-2023 and more than 10GW expected to be built by 2026. Brazil is also looking to tap into the offshore market, and has the potential to deploy as much as 700GW of offshore wind, according to a roadmap for offshore wind released by the country’s Energy Research Office (EPE) in January 2020.

  • China leads the way as wind energy sees another year of stable growth

    The wind power energy industry installed 51.3 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity last year, a 3.6 percent fall when compared to 2017‘s growth, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) said Tuesday. Despite this reduction, the international trade association said that the growth of the worldwide wind energy market had “been stable” since 2014, with more than 50 GW of new capacity installed each year. Total installed capacity stood at 591 GW at the end of 2018, which represents an increase of 9.6 percent compared to the end of 2017, the GWEC added. Installed capacity relates to how much energy can be produced at maximum output, not what is currently being generated. GWEC CEO Ben Backwell said that China had led “both onshore and offshore growth,” adding that “huge growth” was expected in Asia “through the coming decade and beyond.” Breaking the figures down, the onshore sector was responsible for 46.8 GW of new capacity in 2018, while the offshore wind market added 4.49 GW. In the onshore sector, Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa were responsible for 10 percent of new installations last year. China led the way in offshore, installing 1.8 GW, while the U.K. and Germany installed 1.3 GW and 0.9 GW, respectively.

    GWEC Releases 2018 Global Wind Report (Ind. Report)

    The Brussels-headquartered Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has released its 14th annual report on the status of the global wind industry . The report provides a comprehensive overview of the global industry in more than 90 countries, 30 of which have more than 1,000 MW of installed wind i and 9 countries with more than 10,000.

    GWEC is a member-based and member-funded organization that represents the entire wind energy sector. The members of GWEC represent over 1,500 companies, organisations and institutions in more than 80 countries, including manufacturers, developers, component suppliers, research institutes, national wind and renewables associations, electricity providers, finance and insurance companies.

    Total Offshore Wind Capacity Grew 20 pct in 2018 (Ind. Report)

    The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) reports the worldwide wind industry installed 51.3 GW of new capacity in 2018 -- 3.6 pct less than the previous year.

    The GWEC's country-by-country breakdown shows China installed the most offshore capacity in a year for the first time, adding 1.8 GW. The United Kingdom came in second with 1.3 GW, while Germany came in third with 969 MW.

    Top onshore markets in 2018 were: China with 21,200 MW followed by the USA -- 7,588 MW, Germany -- 2,402 MW; India -- 2,191 MW; Brazil -- 1,939 MW; France -- 1,563 MW; Mexico -- 929 MW; Sweden -- 717 MW; the United Kingdom -- 589 MW; and Canada -- 566 MW.

    Top offshore markets in 2018: China -- 1,800 MW; United Kingdom -- 1,312 MW; Germany -- 969 MW; Belgium -- 309 MW; and Denmark with 61 MW.     Asia-Pacific Installed 24.9 GW new Onshore Wind in 2018 (Int'l)

    According to recent data from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), the total installed onshore wind power capacity in the Asia-Pacific region is now 256 GW. Leading countries in the region for onshore wind turbines installations in 2018 were China (21.2 GW) and India (2.2 GW). The surge for wind energy in Asia-Pacific is expected to continue with GWEC forecasting over 145 GW of new onshore wind farm capacity to be installed by 2023.

    According to the GWEC, the top three onshore wind farm markets in Asia-Pacific in 2018 were: China -- 21.2 GW (preliminary); India -- 2.2 GW, and Australia -- 0.549 GW.

    China installed the most onshore wind farm capacity during 2018 in Asia-Pacific and globally. GWEC expects China to remain the largest onshore wind turbines market in the future. However, other markets are developing and with auctions progressing in India, new onshore wind power capacity installations could exceed 5 GW annually in India.     Wind Energy Capacity Installations Rising in the Americas (Int'l)

    According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) shows North, Central and South America together installed 11.9 GW capacity of wind power in 2018,up 12 pct on 2017. In North America (Canada and USA) new capacity additions grew by 10.8 pct compared to 2017. In Latin America new capacity additions jumped 18.7 pct compared to 2017. The GWEC also notes:
  • the wind energy industry supports over 160,000 jobs in North America -- CanWEA and AWEA stats;

  • Brazil installed 2 GW of added wind farm capacity during 2018 and auctioned further capacity at world beating prices of as low as $22/MWh;

  • Mexico installed almost 1 GW of new wind turbines capacity, the highest capacity additions ever and now has a total capacity of 5 GW. The country expects to reach its target of generating 35 pct of its power capacity through renewables before 2024;

  • the North American offshore wind power market continues to develop with supply chain planning taking place, tenders for offshore leasing zones being conducted (Massachusetts), JV formations (EDF and Shell for New Jersey leasing zones) and industry players establishing offices (MHI Vestas).
