Among the findings, Perdigao, a field experiment in Vale do Cobrao, a valley in eastern Portugal, shows that the speed and direction of wind over complex terrain at the height of wind turbine hubs differ by as much as 40-50 pct from standard weather forecasts that wind turbine operators rely on to bring facilities online and supply wind power to the grid, according to a report published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.
To be useful, wind power forecasts need to be made at least six hours in advance so electric grid operators can balance loads effectively. The Perdigao study aims to improve such forecasts by improving "microscale" models which capture the details of flow surrounding a wind turbine providing wind information at points separated by 100 meters compared to tens of kilometers in standard weather prediction models.

The 20 funded projects are expected to generate $4 billion in direct investment in the clean energy sector, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and generate sufficient clean energy for nearly 550,000 homes. Combined with the renewable energy projects previously announced under democratic Governor Cuomo's Clean Energy Standard, New York has now awarded 46 projects worth more than $2.9 billion.
The awards also propel New York toward the Governor's ramped up mandate for 70 pct of the state's electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030 -- up from 50 pct -- and helps guide the state toward achieving carbon neutrality across all sectors of its economy as quickly as possible including a 100 pct carbon-free electricity sector by 2040.

According to a Statoil statement, existing fixed turbines were only best for water depths of 20 to 50 meters. The new floating design is suitable for water depths of 100 meters or more where average wind speeds are often around 10 meters per second.
