GE Haliade-X Turbine Operating at 14 MW (Ind. Report, Int'l.)

GE Renewable Energy is reporting its Haliade-X prototype in Rotterdam has begun operating at 14 MW -- the first turbine in the wind industry to operate a turbine at this power output. The Haliade-X 14 MW is an uprated version of the Haliade-X 13 MW, which received its type certification in January 2021. One Haliade-X 14 MW turbine can generate up to 74 GWh of gross annual energy production while saving up to 52,000 metric tpy of C02.

. The Haliade-X 14 MW will make its commercial debut at the Dogger Bank C offshore wind farm, which is located over 130 km off the north-east coast of England and, together with Dogger Bank A and Dogger Bank B, is due to become the largest offshore wind farm in the world upon completion. GE Tapped for 200 MW Moroccan Wind Farm Turbines (Ind. Report)

GE Renewable Energy reports it has been selected by Casablanca-based Energie Eolienne du Maroc (EEM) to supply and install 40 units of its 5.0 MW Cypress onshore wind turbines for the 200 MW Aftissat onshore wind farm extension in Morocco. The deal includes a 20-year full-service contract.

GE, ACTA MARINE Ink Offshore Wind Vessel Agreement (Int'l.)

Nantes – France - September 22, 2021 -- GE Renewable Energy and Nates, France-headquartered ACTA MARINE are reporting a supply contract for the chartering of a Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for the installation and commissioning of 80 GE Haliade 150-6MW turbines totaling 480 MW at the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm in France.

The vessel, ACTA AURIGA, will start operating on behalf of GE Renewable Energy in the second quarter of 2022, when the offshore wind turbine installation is set to begin. GE Renewable Energy's Grid Solutions business reports receipt of a contract from Oslo, Norway utility Elvia to deliver an SF6 free substation in Heggedal featuring GE's g3 gas, an alternative to Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) -- a potent greenhouse gas.

The project scope includes the design, engineering, delivery, erection and commissioning of six bays of GE's F-35-41g 145 kV g3 insulated switchgear and associated electrical balance of plant. This represents the delivery of one of the most digitally advanced gas-insulated substations (GIS) in the world, with a GE digital solution that includes low power instrument transformers (LPIT) and GE's BWatch, an online digital monitoring system.

A recent EU Commission report concluded that fluoronitrile-based gas mixtures -- such as g3 gas -- may be the only insulating and switching gas alternative to SF6 when space is a constraint. GE Renewable Energy and the Polish state oil refiner and petrol retailer PKN ORLEN are reporting a Memorandum of Understanding to explore ways to work together to support the development of offshore wind projects in Poland, a country expected to award up to 10.9 GW of offshore wind projects by 2030 and up to 28 GW of offshore wind by 2050.

GE Renewable Energy is already active in the Polish wind market with over 300 onshore wind turbines delivering 900 MW, with almost half of that coming online since 2018. LM Wind Power, a GE Renewable Energy business, also employs around 1,000 employees at its Goleniow, Poland, onshore wind turbine blade manufacturing site. The government of Poland has announced plans to award up to 10.9 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and offers new sea areas enabling development of future offshore wind projects. GE Renewable Energy, LM Wind Power and GE Research, in partnership with the US DOE National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are reporting completion of the 2020 Automated Blade Finishing programme aimed at improving wind turbine blade quality, manufacturing, advancing knowledge of composite processing together with sensing, robotics and automation to develop low-cost solutions for wind blade finishing with potential to increase throughput by 30 pct.

The programme is supported by the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) , Colorado’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) . AMO, through the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation awarded NREL $800 000 which was matched by $400 000 from OEDIT and $600 000 in company matching contributions. LM Wind Power Expanding Gaspe Wind Blade Plant (Ind. Report)

GE Renewable Energy reports is partnering with the governments of Canada and Quebec for the expansion of its LM Wind Power wind turbine blade facility in Gaspe, Quebec, Canada.

The plant, which was previously expanded in 2017, has manufactured more than 10,000 blades, equivalent to approximately 6,000 MW. since it began production in 2005.

According to the Canadian Renewable Energy Association , Canada has more than 13,500 MW of installed wind capacity, enough to supply approximately three million homes. Leeward Closes Financing for Aragonne Wind Projects (Ind. Report)

Dallas-headquartered Leeward Renewable Energy, LLC reports it has closed on $262 million construction financing and secured tax equity commitments for the repowering of Leeward’s 90 MW Aragonne Wind project (Aragonne Repower) and the construction of the new 145 MW Aragonne Mesa Wind project. Construction of the Aragonne Repower and Aragonne Mesa projects in Guadalupe County, New Mexico, are underway and expected to be completed by this December.

Under a previously announced 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Arizona Public Service Company (APS), the GE wind turbine equipped projects will provide a combined 200 MW of wind power to APS.

Leeward Renewable Energy owns and operates a portfolio of 21 renewable energy facilities across nine states totaling approximately 2,000 MW of generating capacity. GE, TNO Researching Wind Blade Tip Improvements (Ind. Report)

A consortium of GE Renewable Energy, LM Wind Power and TNO, are collaborating on the TIADE project to develop technologies and design methods for more efficient operation of next-generation wind turbine rotors, wind farms with large rotor wakes, and demonstrate them in the field.

Innovations developed in the TIADE project will be tested on the full-scale 130 m diameter turbine recently installed in Wieringermeer, Netherlands. The turbine is powered by two-piece blades which allows the outer 12 m of the blades to be replaced by several innovative tips such as spoilers, serrations, vortex generators, "turbulators" and blade tip improvements. These innovations, which will be validated using advanced measurement techniques, can be applied to newly manufactured wind turbines in the factory or retrofitted to existing offshore wind farms. With both options available, implementation of the technologies in offshore wind farms can be done from 2023. Africa Renewable Energy Fund II Secures Funding (Int'l.)

In Uganda, the Africa Renewable Energy Fund II reports it has reached €125 million, following a joint investment of €17.5 million from he Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa and the Climate Technology Fund through the African Development Ba's CDP, the Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) and SwedFund.

The Fund is a 10-year closed-ended renewable energy Private Equity Fund with a €300 million ($358 million) target capitalization. GE, LafargeHolcim to Investigate Wind Blade Recycling (Ind. Report)

Wind turbine manufacturer General Electric (GE) Renewable Energy and the world's largest cement manufacturer LafargeHolcim, are reporting a memorandum of understanding (MOU) under which they will investigate new ways of recycling wind blades, including use as a construction material to build new wind farms.

Under the MoU, LafargeHolcim plans to explore how wind turbine blades can be turned into sustainable construction materials. This research builds on the company's work under its Geocycle brand, to recover energy from GE's decommissioned turbine blades after they have been removed from the turbine and shredded.

GE Wins 88-MW Vietnam Wind Turbine Order (Ind. Report)

The $135.9 million project is expected generate 306.9 million kWh per year for the national power grid when it comes online by the end Q3, this year.

GE Scores $6.7Mn for 3D Printed Wind Blades (Ind. Report)

General Electric is reportings its GE Research, GE Renewable Energy, and LM Wind Power units were recently selected by the US DOE to research the design and manufacture of 3-D printed wind turbine blades.

The GE units will partner with the Oakridge National Lab (ORNL) and the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) on the 25-month, $6.7 million project to develop and demonstrate an integrated additive manufacturing process for novel high-performance blade designs for large rotors.

Leeward Completes Sweetwater 3 Wind Farm Repowering (Ind. Report)

In the Lone Star State, Dallas-based Leeward Renewable Energy, LLC is reporting repowering of its Nolan County, Texas, Sweetwater 3 wind farm to increase the facility's capacity from 135 MW to roughly 146 MW. GE Renewable Energy supplied turbines for the repowering as well construction services and ongoing operations and maintenance services for the project.

The Sweetwater 3 repower replaced and enhanced major existing components of 90 legacy GE Renewable Energy wind turbines resulting in increased capacity, reliability and performance, and reduced operating cost. Sweetwater 3 will continue providing energy to its offtake partner, San Antonio-based CPS Energy, under its long-term PPA, according to the release.

GE Renewable Energy reports a working version of its 13MW Haliade-X prototype set a record for a single day of electric power generation at 228MWh -- sufficient power for roughly 45 Australian homes for an entire year.

The 13MW Haliade-X is GE's largest turbine ever, standing 248 metres tall with 107 metre long blades, offering almost double the generation capacity of most wind turbines currently deployed around the world.

130 units of the 13MW turbine is expected to be deployed at the UK's Dogger Bank Wind Farm starting in 2023. ACEEE 2020 City Clean Energy Scorecard Released (Ind. Report)

The fifth ACEEE City Clean Energy Scorecard measures the progress of city policies and programs that save energy, encourage renewable energy, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also focusing on equity in development and delivery.

ACEEE ranks 100 large U.S. cities for their energy efficiency and renewable energy efforts across 5 policy areas -- local government operations, community-wide initiatives, buildings, energy and water utilities, and transportation.

In this year's results, New York earns the top spot in the rankings for the first time. followed by Boston and Seattle (tied for second) and Minneapolis and San Francisco (tied for fourth). St. Paul and St. Louis are the most-improved since the 2019 City Scorecard.

The report notes many cities continue to ramp up their clean energy efforts, but bottom-scoring cities are years behind the policy efforts of the leaders. The Scorecard provides a roadmap for cities aiming to take the next step in their pursuit of clean energy by learning from others' successes and adapting best practices to suit their own communities.

GE Renewable Energy has announced a trio of orders for its 2.X onshore wind turbines with Invenergy. The 576 MW, 187-turbine order will power the equivalent of 160,000 American homes across three US states. The agreement includes: 54 2.X-127 turbines for the 110 MW Crescent Wind Energy Center in Michigan; 30 2.X-127 and 6 2.X-116 turbines for the 166 MW Contrail Wind Energy Center in Iowa; and 97 2.X-127 for the 300 MW Deuel Harvest Wind Energy Center in South Dakota

All three projects are scheduled to be operational by Q1 of 2021 or earlier.

3D-Printed Concrete Wind Tower Project Touted (Ind. Report)

Printing a variable height base directly on-site with 3D-printed concrete technology will enable the construction of towers up to 150-200 metres tall, according to the release.

Ocean Renewables Touted as Climate Change Solution (Ind. Report)

The attached report from the Ocean Renewable Energy Action Coalition's (OREAC) Ocean Panel has found that ocean-based renewable energy, such as offshore wind, floating solar, tidal and wave power, could meet nearly 10 pct of the global annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions needed to remain on a Paris-compliant 1.5 degrees C pathway in 2050.

The report estimates that up to 85 pct of this decarbonization potential will come from offshore wind. 1,400 GW of offshore wind would power one-tenth of global electricity demand while saving over 3 billion tpy of CO2 -- equal to taking 800 million cars off the road.

OREAC is spearheaded by Orsted and Equinor, and includes other major players in the global offshore wind industry: CWind, Global Marine Group, JERA, MHI Vestas, MingYang Smart Energy, Mainstream Renewable Power, Shell, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, TenneT, and GE Renewable Energy. COVID-19 Causes N.D. Wind Blade Plant Shutdown (Ind. Report)

The GE factory, which makes rotor blades for wind turbines, will be closed for at least two weeks, and the governor has issued a stay-at-home order for all 900 workers regardless of their test results. The workers will be paid during the shutdown during which the plant will be disinfected, according to a release. A consortium led by Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Investment, is reporting inauguration of the $331 million Cibuk 1, the largest utility-scale commercial wind project in Serbia and the Western Balkans. GE Renewable Energy reports it has contracted to supply 33 units of its 5.3 MW Cypress wind turbines, its largest onshore wind turbine, for WindSpace's 175 MW Bjorkvattnet Wind Farm which will generate sufficient power for 175,000 homes in Sweden. The contract includes a 25-years Full Services Agreement.

The Bjorkvattnet Wind Farm project was developed by Vindparken and WindSpace, with support from GE Renewable Energy, and sold to InfraVia Capital Partners, a Paris-based infrastructure investor. The project is expected to come on line by the end of 2020. GE Cypress Onshore Wind Platform Chosen for Aussie Project (Int'l)

GE Renewable Energy reports it has been selected by investors Partners Group and CWP as the wind turbine supplier for the 244 MW Bango wind farm near Yass, New South Wales, Australia.

The project, which will incorporate 46 GE Cypress onshore wind platforms, is the company's first Cypress-equipped wind farm in Australia and the largest globally to date.

Construction is expected to get underway shortly for commissioning and start of operations by 2021. The Cypress is GE's most powerful and efficient wind turbine in operation.
